Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Being poor is a health risk (Wells et al., 2019). When we wrote Poverty and Place, Cancer Prevention among Low Income Women of Color (2019), we demonstrated the potent forces of poverty and place and the prevalence of cancer among low-income women of color. That initial volume was the inspiration for this volume, entitled Cancer Navigation: Charting the Pathway Forward for Low Income Women of Color. In Poverty and Place, we had academics and researchers in mind. Our purpose was to examine how and why racial and class disparities have become potent forces in health and longevity rates in the United States. Conducting original research drawn from North City St. Louis, Missouri and the river city of East St. Louis, Illinois, we sought to understand the combination of factors that facilitate or pose a barrier to cancer treatment and adherence, for marginalized low- income women of color"--

Book Breast Cancer Screening in a Low Income Managed Care Population

Download or read book Breast Cancer Screening in a Low Income Managed Care Population written by Robert E. Hardy and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low income women experience more morbidity and a shorter survival compared to more affluent women. Yet these women are least likely to avail themselves of screening and early detection testing which has been previously demonstrated to be associated with prolongation of survival for women subsequently diagnosed with breast cancer. The goal of this project is to increase screening and early detection practices in low income women, forty years and older, who are enrolled in a statewide HMO. It compares the relative effectiveness of two interventions (a simple one using a letter of invitation and a more intensive "step-wise" intervention of two sequential letters and follow-up counseling and home visits). Both interventions are compared with a control group of women who continue to receive their "usual care". This report gives an account of program planning and process evaluation. The results of the baseline survey across groups are presented. A most significant finding was the difficulty of locating and contacting subjects who were literally "hard-to-reach". Detailed data are provided illustrating the scope of this problem. Baseline survey data analysis is in process and intervention among groups is being initiated.

Book Young breast cancer survivors

Download or read book Young breast cancer survivors written by Florence K L Tangka and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic burden of breast cancer for women under 50 in the United States remains largely unexplored, in part because young women make up a small proportion of breast cancer cases overall. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a web-based survey to compare data from breast cancer survivors 18–39 years of age at first diagnosis and 40–49 years of age at first diagnosis. We administered a survey to a national convenience sample of 416 women who were 18–49 years of age at the time of their breast cancer diagnosis. We analyzed factors associated with financial decline using multivariate regression.Survivors 18–39 years of age at first diagnosis were more likely to report Stage II–IV breast cancer (P < 0.01). They also quit their jobs more often (14.6%) than older survivors (4.4%; P < 0.01) and faced more job performance issues (55.7% and 42.8%, respectively; P = 0.02). For respondents in both groups, financial decline was more likely if the survivor had at least one comorbid condition (odds ratios: 2.36–3.21) or was diagnosed at Stage II–IV breast cancer (odds ratios: 2.04–3.51).

Book Radiotherapy in Cancer Care

Download or read book Radiotherapy in Cancer Care written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer treatment is complex and calls for a diverse set of services. Radiation therapy is recognized as an essential tool in the cure and palliation of cancer. Currently, access to radiation treatment is limited in many countries and non-existent in some. This lack of radiation therapy resources exacerbates the burden of disease and underscores the continuing health care disparity among States. Closing this gap represents an essential measure in addressing this global health equity problem. This publication presents a comprehensive overview of the major topics and issues to be taken into consideration when planning a strategy to address this problem, in particular in low and middle income countries. With contributions from leaders in the field, it provides an introduction to the achievements and issues of radiation therapy as a cancer treatment modality around the world. Book Experiences of Black Women Breast Cancer Survivors Risk and Resilience

Download or read book Experiences of Black Women Breast Cancer Survivors Risk and Resilience written by Jesslyn Ingram and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among all women in the US and the second leading cause of cancer death (DeSantis, Ma, Gaudet Newman, et al, 2019). Black women in the US are less likely to survive breast cancer with death rates 40% higher than White women (DeSantis, Ma, Gaudet Newman, et al, 2019; DeSantis, Fedewa, Goding Sauer et al, 2016). Black women younger than age 40 have the lowest survival rate of all groups, representing an ongoing and significant health disparity (Sheppard, Llanos et al, 2013).Background/Objective: To explore the experience of Black breast cancer patients. Methods: 25 African American breast cancer survivors ages 41-79 participated in a qualitative study. Age at diagnosis ranged from 31-70 years, with mean survival time since diagnosis ranging from 3 months to 24 years. Women participated in a semi-structured interview format. These studies were guided by the following primary research question: What are the risk and protective factors for African American women with breast cancer? Results: Interview data was analyzed using qualitative software NVIVO and coded for recurrent themes reported. African American cancer survivors drew on inner resources including spirituality, cognitive reframing, personal agency, and racial socialization. Coping resources in their environment included relational supports, medical resources, financial resources, and engaging in community health education and mentoring other survivors. African American cancer survivors reported individual and environmental risks in the categories of emotional distress, help-seeking barriers, medical mistrust and cultural silence about cancer. Younger women reported greater distress regarding relational and caregiving strain, negative impact on social network and functioning, and distress related to body image and fertility concerns.

Book Cancer Control Opportunities in Low and Middle Income Countries

Download or read book Cancer Control Opportunities in Low and Middle Income Countries written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-01-26 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is low or absent on the health agendas of low- and middle-income countries (LMCs) despite the fact that more people die from cancer in these countries than from AIDS and malaria combined. International health organizations, bilateral aid agencies, and major foundations—which are instrumental in setting health priorities—also have largely ignored cancer in these countries. This book identifies feasible, affordable steps for LMCs and their international partners to begin to reduce the cancer burden for current and future generations. Stemming the growth of cigarette smoking tops the list to prevent cancer and all the other major chronic diseases. Other priorities include infant vaccination against the hepatitis B virus to prevent liver cancers and vaccination to prevent cervical cancer. Developing and increasing capacity for cancer screening and treatment of highly curable cancers (including most childhood malignancies) can be accomplished using "resource-level appropriateness" as a guide. And there are ways to make inexpensive oral morphine available to ease the pain of the many who will still die from cancer.

Book Beauty without the Breast

Download or read book Beauty without the Breast written by Felicia Marie Knaul and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-14 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Felicia Knaul, an economist who has lived and worked for two decades in Latin America on health and social development, documents the personal and professional sides of her breast cancer experience. Beauty without the Breast contrasts her difficult but inspiring journey with that of the majority of women throughout the world who face not only the disease but stigma, discrimination, and lack of access to health care. This wrenching contrast is the cancer divide—an equity imperative in global health. Knaul exposes barriers affecting women in low and middle-income countries and highlights the role of men, family, and community in responding to the challenge of breast cancer. She shares striking data about breast cancer, a leading killer of young women in developing countries, and narrates the process of applying this evidence and launching Tómatelo a Pecho (also the book title in Spanish)—a Mexico-based program promoting awareness and access to health care. The book concludes with letters from Dr. Julio Frenk, her husband and former Minister of Health of Mexico, written while they shared the trauma of diagnosis and treatment. With force and lucidity, the book narrates the journey of patient and family as they courageously navigate disease and survivorship.
