Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experiences in the Civil War When the War broke out I was in business in State street, Chicago, as a grocer and butcher. We all thought the first six months would put an end to the War; that the first quota of men, which was seventy-five thousand, would be a sufficient number, but we found we had miscalculated the strength of the South. Abraham Lincoln had to issue a proclamation for six hundred thousand. Then he issued another proclamation, that every slave that came within the reach of the army should be free. He gave the South three months to make up their minds. It was the opinion of most people they would come in as they were, and enjoy all the rights they ever had, but they saw all the Western States were being settled by the free North. Now they knew, with no more territory than they had in the South, slavery would be no good to them, so they decided to fight it to the bitter end. Up to this time we had no success, but when the three months were ended and we had started again, we had success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Experiences in the Civil War The rumbling of the coming storm found my immediate family strong adherents of the Free Soil policy, as represented by Fre mont and Dayton, and Lincoln and Hamlin. They were not extreme Abolitionists - per haps not Abolitionists in any sense - but they believed that the Territories of our country were for free men, as the country as a whole was free and slavery only local. After the election of Lincoln, in 1860, came the secession of South Carolina and other States. Then all eyes turned to Fort Sumter, where the gallant Anderson held the fort. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in the Confederate Army: Being the Observations and Experiences of an Alien in the South During the American Civil War ON the origin, progress, and issue of the American Civil War there has, no doubt, been much written from various sources, and from different points of view. Assuming those accounts to be strictly correct and impartial, still it must be acknowledged that in general descriptions of events of historical importance the subject is generally taken in the abstract, wholly and collectively, and there is seldom room for any minute analysis of individual senti ment, personal views, or minor incidents, which might be interesting if given in a personal narrative, even though that narrative extended only to a limited portion of the general subject; and more especially if the narrator hap pened. To be an outsider, having little or no direct interest on either side, but became a participant in the events through force of peculiar circumstances. The writer resided for several years immediately pre ceding the war in the capital of one of the Southern States; and, though his occupation and station were more among the industrious, non-slaveholding, and less political class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civil War Stories The one hundred and thirty volumes of War Records, Union and Confederate, the publication of which, by the government, was recently completed, contain the inside facts connected with the four years of the Civil War, - the most tremendous period in the history of our nation. Many of the letters and orders published were marked " Private and Confidential," and were never before made public. These big books tell of ambitions realized; of plans which failed; of personal jealousies and disappointments; of suffering by men and women and little children; of manacles and chains; of death of blindfolded men in front of a file of soldiers; of executions on the scaffold; of bloody battles; of weary marches; of prison camps; of wrong, injustice, and sacrifice; of brutality which would disgrace a heathen people; of loyalty worthy of saints; of unjust criticism and querulous fault-finding; of loss of life and loss of fortune; of greed battening on a nation's stress; of generous proffer of all men and women held dear; of the hopefulness, the forbearance, the suffering, the broad charity, and the forgiving spirit of that noblest son of the greatest nation on earth - Abraham Lincoln. To glean from the 139,868 printed pages comprising this stupendous record some of the stories it contains of the intense life of that eventful period, and to render accessible to the general public historical facts which would be otherwise known to only the few, is the purpose of this book. Book The Civil War in History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Civil War in History Classic Reprint written by Asa A. Spear and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-28 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War in History The diary of the Civil War has been written by many and distinguished historians, some actors in its scenes, and others not, who have sought to record the great and con trolling events Of that bloody struggle from different view points and Often colored by personal experiences, or told in such way as to add luster to the names and deeds of certain distinguished actors. But these diaries have given us, in the main, a reliable story, from which we may draw safe and abiding lessons for the nation's future guidance. Many diaries of the Civil War have been written in humbler fashion, by less distinguished people, and record ing the deeds Of humbler men, which are none the less truthful, and which, none the less, contain the richer teachings of those strenuous years. Each one of us, com rades, has written such a diary, either upon paper, or in the hearts and lives of those near to us. We have narrated our personal experiences and vividly described scenes which we have witnessed and in which we have been actors, to those who have not forgotten the stories, andby whom lessons, hidden in them, are being discovered, and wrought into the sturdy manhood of the generations that have already followed ours. By the aid of memory we sweep back through the years and over the experiences of life, and great truths rush upon us which we did not see when we were passing through them. Many and wonderful are the lessons already learned by this retrospect, by the study of these diaries. But fifty years is too short a space of time to give a perspective sufficient to disclose all that is stored in these written and unwritten records. We have already learned much. Mighty influences have already proceeded from them. But the historian of the generations yet to come, as distance gives him a fuller and more perfect view of the events and scenes in which we were actors, will find lessons and truths hidden in them, which have not been disclosed to us and which we have not imagined. The nation is nobler and better by reason of. What has already been learned. She has become more powerful for righteousness and has a mightier influence among the na tions, by reason of the unfolding and strengthening of the true spirit of liberty which the Civil War brought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Boy's Experience in the Civil War: 1860-1865 Free access to the Capitol gave me the opportunity to observe minutely the funeral arrangements for General Thomas J. Jackson. Stonewall Jackson' s remains were brought to Richmond to he in stateinthe Capitol pi epara tory to his funeral. And they arrived late one evening and were first deposited in a little room on the left of the entrance to the Capitol on the side next to the Governor's house. The burial casket was placed onabier, uncovered, and the custodian of the Capitol permitted a favored few including myself to view the remains. The cofiin had ever green heavily intertwined around it. Theic were no flowers. His face was exactly as appears in his photo graphs, except it was thinner, the features were perfectly placid, not evidencing that he had suffered pain, his whiskers and mustache were of unusual thickness, his forehead high and his hair coal black. I brought a small portion of the evergreen on the casket away with me. After lying in state whenhis funeral took place the cortege was preceded by a brass band that played afuneraldirge; the horse that General Jackson rode with General J ack son's boots hanging down one on each side of his saddle came next to the hearse and was led by his body servant. The funeral was impressive as only such a one could be. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rebel Private, Front and Rear: Experiences and Observations From the Early Fifties and Through the Civil War This effort is made through memory, as I have no written data, therefore, will not attempt to give names or dates, only in a few instances. I was born in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, in 1839. When I was about fourteen years of age I began to notice through listening to the talking of the older people, the trend of feeling in regard to slavery, between the North and South, and as my father was a close reader and kept fairly well posted oil the live topics of the day, and as he had been a slave driver or overseer in Texas at an early date, later on in Louisiana, he was up on the goods and abuses of the system as practised, for he had the advantage while in Texas of having charge of fifteen "likely bucks," as he called them, who were just from their nativity, and who he ran to Louisiana from the Brazos River when General Santa Anna was invading Texas; and his opinion was that the abuses by inhuman owners were such that an enlightened and humane people would sooner or later abolish it by some method; and he was fearful it would be war. as both North and South seemed to be swayed by the demagogy, and it was evident the statesmen were largely in the minority, so if things did not take a different course soon, the blood of the bone and sinew of the government would soon he flowing on a number of hard fought battle fields. Father's opinion was an unpopular one and as time passed, it got more so and he would randy express it to but few of his closest friends, who give one the same privilege of expression that they take on subjects of great concern. The hot-headed politician and preacher seemed to be molding public opinion without any regard for the country as a whole.
