Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychology and Industrial Efficiency Clear, concrete illustrations which demonstrate the possibilities of the new method. In the follow ing pages, accordingly, it will be my aim to ana lyze the results of experiments which have actu ally been carried out, experiments belonging to many different spheres of economic life. But these detached experiments ought always at least to point to a connected whole; the single experiments will, therefore, always need a general discussion of the principles as a background. In the interest of such a wider perspective we may at first enter into some preparatory questions of theory. They may serve as an introduction which is to lead us to the actual economic life and the present achievements of experimental psychology. Download or read book The Secret of Progress Classic Reprint written by W. Cunningham and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-10-16 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book Fundamental Sources of Efficiency Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fundamental Sources of Efficiency Classic Reprint written by Fletcher Durell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamental Sources of Efficiency The present work is an attempt to analyze the various forms and sources of efficiency into a few elemental principles. It is felt that the study of such primal elements will not only aid in the mastery of efficiency in a given field, but will prevent this important idea from assuming a narrow meaning and thus leading to limited or even, in some respects, harmful results. The above treatment of the subject also facilitates, on the one hand, the use of efficiency principles in all the various details of work and experience and, on the other, their application in the formation of a general philosophy of life. While the book has been cast in a form adapted to general read ing, groups of exercises have been inserted which, it is hoped, will add to its value if it is used as a textbook in any institution where the principles of efficiency are taught either generally or in any specific field. It is also believed that such a presentation of the principles of efficiency may throw light on the problem of vocational and cultural studies, and perhaps suggest how the study of the principles of efficiency, as such, may be made a central study in educational systems, helping to give both vocational and cultural values to other more conventional studies. Book Lectures on Efficiency

Download or read book Lectures on Efficiency written by Herbert N. Casson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Efficiency: A Series of Six Lectures Delivered The Lectures on Efficiency here printed were delivered by Mr. Herbert N. Casson, an undoubted authority on this subject, with a wide experience in two Continents, to the members of our staff of both works and offices at Newton Heath. I hope they will be carefully read and considered by those who heard them, as well as by those who were unable to be present. Mr. Casson deals with various problems on broad principles, principles which underlie all manufacturing and commercial enterprises. He presents to us facts in connection with our every-day activities which are often ignored or considered unimportant factors of efficiency. Little or no attempt is made to indicate the precise application of these principles to the details of our own business, that being left to the initiative of each individual member of the staff according to the needs of his particular case. Most of us are probably aware of the facts- many of them axioms-which Mr. Casson lays down, but there will still remain for all of us new methods of application from which we cannot fail to obtain lasting benefit. Book The Twelve Principles of Efficiency Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Twelve Principles of Efficiency Classic Reprint written by Harrington Emerson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Twelve Principles of Efficiency Harrington Emerson's earlier book "Efficiency as a Basis for Operation and Wages" appeared originally in 1908, and a third edition, revised and enlarged, is being reissued almost in parallel with this second and later work on "The Twelve Principles of Efficiency." The relations between the first and second presentations of the subject thus become clear. The former sets forth a new view of the whole industrial problem and of the relations and proportions of the factors entering into it. It is the declaration of a philosophy. This latter work, stronger even than its predecessor, and more specific in statement, reduces the doctrine of efficiency to a code upon which to base rules of practice. In the volume now published, the author defines twelve principles by which efficiency is determined. Five of these concern relations between men - or, in the industrial problem, specifically between employer and employee. Seven of them concern methods or institutions and systems established in the manufacturing plant or in the operating and distributing company. Book Installing Efficiency Methods Classic Reprint

Download or read book Installing Efficiency Methods Classic Reprint written by C. E. Knoeppel and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Installing Efficiency Methods In this book Mr. Knoeppel undertakes not the mere declaration of principles, but the exact definition of practice. He does not explain why greater efficiency should be sought in industrial plants; that has been ably argued already. He describes what the actual methods are that increase the efficiency of a manufacturing establishment, and how they are put into practical effect. The whole exposition undertakes to answer completely the questions many a manufacturer has put to himself or others, hitherto without satisfying answer. These questions arc: what is the first thing an efficiency engineer does when he comes into a plant on the first morning of his engagement - and what is the next thing, and the next, and the next? How does he find out where to begin the work of betterment, and what does he do when he has found it? This is what Mr. Knoeppel explains step-by-step, and chapter-by-chapter. As originally prepared the material appeared in a series of articles published in The Engineering Magazine during the year 1914. In this volume the matter is much expanded, and to a considerable extent recast. The first five chapters, which give vividness and a sense of concrete application to the whole thing, are new, except the list of questions for self-examination in Chapter V. The chapter on Auxiliary Devices for the Planning Department (XIV) and the supplementary chapter on Costs (XIX) are here published for the first time, while the chapter on the Efficiency Clearing House (XVIII) is considerably enlarged, and minor interpolations amplifying or clarifying the sense have been introduced at many points. Furthermore, new charts, diagrams, and illustrations to the number of thirty or more have been added, thus making the book presentation of much increased value even to those who have followed the series in the magazine. The earnest purpose always and everywhere has been to give wholly frank and thoroughly practical working instructions and explanations, covering the entirety of efficiency practice, as tested and proven in many important and successful undertakings carried out by the author. This purpose both Mr. Knoeppel and his editors sincerely hope has been attained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Efficiency: Its Spiritual Source Do mortals then remain as helpless as this; fast chained and looking upon a violent and lawless con fusion? Or have they, each in his own sphere, the power to govern and control conditions; the force and skill to make and to follow a straight and certain path leading whither greater freedom is possible? If it be sweet to pass in confident hope through a long life then indeed it is worth while, at all times, to avoid scheming against the harmonious system of the gods and thus permit one's self to become en riched. By obeying the law a termination of trials may arise and peace and strength may enter where pain, and fear, and terror have hitherto appeared to be the sovereign agents. Let us consider our duty in this regard; first in the simple demands of daily life; if, perchance, we may discover in what it is that harmonious life consists. Primarily we ask of ourselves whether it is pos sible to control daily life in the varying conditions which are imposed upon us by duty, environment, and people? Can one, by taking thought, add this cubit to his stature? IS it possible to gain such aperception of life as will permit us to begin the day, to pass through it, participating in its activities, and to reach the threshold of the hours of sleep not only unharmed by the experience, but increased by it?
