Book Experience with the Supernatural in Early Christian Times

Download or read book Experience with the Supernatural in Early Christian Times written by Shirley Jackson Case and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible is rich in miracles. Supernaturalism runs like a scarlet thread through the whole book from Genesis to Revelation. Many people tend to pass hastily over the miracle stories, however, and find greater satisfaction in the Bible's less spectacular portrayals of moral ideas and spiritual struggles. So how can we account for the prominence of the miraculous in Hebrew religion and more particularly in early Christianity? Why did the advocates of the new religion concern themselves so extensively with the imagery of supernaturalism? These are the questions Shirley Jackson Case seeks to answer in this provocative work. SHIRLEY JACKSON CASE (1872-1947) was a liberal theologian at the University of Chicago. Case was regarded as perhaps the finest scholar of the socio-historical method, which viewed the Bible as telling and reflecting the history of a movement that had its own needs and goals. She is also the author of The Historicity of Jesus, which is one of the earliest book-length scholarly refutations of the Jesus Myth.

Book Early Christian Witnesses

Download or read book Early Christian Witnesses written by and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2022-11-20 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles and talks included in this collection cover fifty years of theological engagement, the primary focus being on education for ministry in Australia and abroad. Despite the diversity of topics, such as hermeneutics, New Testament theology, preaching, ecumenical relations, and early church history, there is a connecting concern to listen to the unique voices of early Christian witnesses as foundational for the faith and the apostolic claims of the church in its present-day witness. The publication of these essays has been suggested for some time. Despite my reluctance to reissue articles written over a period of more than five decades, I have relented in the hope that there will be enough to engage the interest of a variety of readers, and not only former students in seminaries and theological colleges in Australia and various places overseas. Included here are mainly articles written specifically for publication in journals, but also lectures and talks to various groups of clergy, lay people, and theological students. Of prime concern has always been the explication of the Christian faith according to its earliest witnesses in the early church of apostles and martyrs. Faith remains attested and lived, approved not proven.

Book excerpt: "The people of Ramsey included clerics, knights, and laborers, and their activities overlapped to the point that the infamous tripartite division of medieval society - into those who prayed, fought, and worked - becomes meaningless. The book also crosses chronological boundaries, moving through decades of rebellion, plague, demographic turnover, violence, bloodshed, and war, and ending with religious upheaval that spelled the death of the 600-year-old abbey and the intrusion of an ambitious new lay landlord with courtly connections."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Understanding Spiritual Gifts

Download or read book Understanding Spiritual Gifts written by Sam Storms and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are spiritual gifts? Storms has spent several decades teaching on the topic of the spiritual gifts and equipping believers in the faithful practice of God's gifts. Yet there remains a great deal of confusion about the nature of the gifts and how they best function in the body of Christ. In this comprehensive guide to the spiritual gifts, Storms addresses the many bizarre and misleading interpretations while confronting the tendency to downplay the urgency of spiritual gifts for Christian living and ministry. He explains how spiritual gifts--both the more miraculous and the everyday--are given to build up the body of Christ. God has graciously provided these "manifestations of the Spirit" so that believers might encourage, edify, strengthen, instruct, and console one another, all with a view to an ever-increasing, incremental transformation into the image of Jesus Christ. Throughout this guide, Sam Storms unpacks the glorious truth that there is a supernatural and divine energy or power that fills and indwells the body and soul of every Christian believer. Understanding Spiritual Gifts is useful as a reference to address common questions about the gifts, but it also serves as a training manual for using and exercising the gifts in ministry. It is perfect for any individual or group who wants to grow in their understanding of spiritual gifts for today.

  • Author : Dale C. Allison, Jr.
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2021-03-11

Download or read book The Resurrection of Jesus written by Dale C. Allison, Jr. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest traditions around the narrative of Jesus' resurrection are considered in this landmark work by Dale C. Allison, Jr, drawing together the fruits of his decades of research into this issue at the very core of Christian identity. Allison returns to the ancient sources and earliest traditions, charting them alongside the development of faith in the resurrection in the early church and throughout Christian history. Beginning with historical-critical methodology that examines the empty tomb narratives and early confessions, Allison moves on to consider the resurrection in parallel with other traditions and stories, including Tibetan accounts of saintly figures being assumed into the light, in the chapter “Rainbow Body”. Finally, Allison considers what might be said by way of results or conclusions on the topic of resurrection, offering perspectives from both apologetic and sceptical viewpoints. In his final section of “modest results” he considers scholarly approaches to the resurrection in light of human experience, adding fresh nuance to a debate that has often been characterised in overly simplistic terms of “it happened” or “it didn't”.
