Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experience in the Re-Education of Disabled Soldiers in Great Britain In working out plans for re-education of the disabled in the United States, there is available no more valid example than the experience of our British comrades in the rehabilitation of disabled soldiers. Conditions in Great Britain arc more nearly comparable to our own, than are the conditions of the continental allies. Another point of similarity in problem is that the men dealt with under the British training system are Anglo-Saxons, and thus like in general type to our own citizens. In an endeavor to discover at first hand some of the conclusions developed in the training of disabled soldiers in Great Britain, the present writer inaugurated correspondence with the officials of the various educational institutions to which discharged wounded men are assigned for training by the Ministry of Pensions. The original letter, sent out in the fall of 1918, after explaining the purpose of inquiry, asked the following questions: 1. Are the disabled soldiers instructed in the same classes as regular pupils, or have special courses been set up? How do the curricula of such courses compare with those of the regular classes? 2. What has your experience shown regarding the ambition, earnestness, and regularity of attendance of the men? 3. What subjects are you teaching to disabled soldiers and how many are taking or have taken each course? 4. What is the length of each course? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Provision for Vocational Re-Education of Disabled Soldiers in France Education made an examination of the trade schools to ascertain in what measure they could be utilized for re-education. The result of this examination was a report, dated June 3, 1915, to the Minister of Commerce, suggesting a plan and program for the work.' The report stated that not all the schools of technical education could be utilized, inasmuch as some had no capacity for additional pupils, or taught trades not suit able to disabled men, or could not undertake the placement of any more apprentices in their trades. It was found, however, that a large number of schools could give instruction to mutil's. In some schools it would be possible to receive men into the same classes as the regular pupils. In others special sections for disabled men could be formed. In these last cases the aid of the municipality or of the trade union was sometimes, but not always, necessary to cover the expense of the additional instruction and equipment. The directors of a few schools undertook to organize separate schools for the mutil's under the control of the Minister of Commerce and to make them new centers of special technical instruction. Ten months afterwards this program was largely realized.ls In national schools of art and crafts, national trade schools, and practical busi ness and industrial schools, courses were ar ranged to teach disabled men how to be self supporting.
