Book Expeditionary Strike Groups Operating as Joint Force Maritime Component Commanders

Download or read book Expeditionary Strike Groups Operating as Joint Force Maritime Component Commanders written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Navy and Marine Corps team of the ESG is the most versatile, capable, and enabling force in Expeditionary Warfare. The ESG embodies nearly all the capabilities required to complete any mission in the littorals and is the force of choice for certain missions within the ROMO. In the execution of these missions where a Joint Task Force is formed, ESGs typically represent the preponderance of maritime forces and provide extensive experience and capabilities for such operations. Even though the ESG may be the best choice to act as JFMCC in the littoral, there is little training conducted prior to deployment to prepare them for JFMCC tasking. This paper examines the capabilities of ESGs and analyzes whether they should be trained as a JFMCC for certain operations within ROMO including Foreign Humanitarian Assistance, Noncombatant Evacuation, Disaster Relief, and Peacekeeping Operations. By analyzing the operational level functions of the JFMCC, comparing/contrasting capabilities of the CSG versus the ESG, and analyzing past joint operations where ESGs and CSGs played vital roles in the joint task force command and control, this paper will provide a recommendation to whether or not ESGs should be trained to operate as JFMCCs.

Book Expeditionary Strike Force A Practical Solution in the Littoral Domain

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intelligently constructed maritime strategy combined with inventive and interdependent joint operational concepts will enable the Department of the Navy to meet future demands in the world's littoral regions. The Navy's operational focus remains platform-centric, with the carrier and a corresponding battle fleet mentality as the central focus of a forward-deployed strategic naval presence. This focus is a reflection of a naval strategy greatly influenced by Alfred Thayer Mahan. It also is a remnant of a Cold War naval mindset that held the forward deployed battle fleet's presence and the decisive battle at the center of its strategic vision. This visualization is not relevant in a world where no peer competitor exists for the United States Navy. In an effort to transform, the Navy is currently conducting a series of experiments to develop an operational concept called the Expeditionary Strike Force (ESF). Naturally, this concept quickly developed a Mahanian flavor -- focusing on the ability to create numerous naval task forces capable of simultaneous, independent, employment throughout the world. The Navy calls these task forces "strike groups" because of their ability to provide decisive strike capabilities. In an effort to create more strike groups, the aircraft carrier Navy has extended a warm hand from a traditionally cold shoulder to the amphibious Navy. Ultimately, in greater or lesser number, these strike groups could unite and form an Expeditionary Strike Force if the situation demanded a larger naval force. This approach functionally forms naval assets around the ability to strike. The Department of the Navy's single function focus takes a narrow view of maritime strategy and limits the Navy's flexibility in providing joint, capability-based, operational forces to Regional Combatant Commanders. Each combatant commander should develop a maritime strategy centered on the Joint Force Maritime Component and influenced by Sir Julian Corbett's principles.

Book C4ISR for Future Naval Strike Groups

Download or read book C4ISR for Future Naval Strike Groups written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-05-26 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Navy has put forth a new construct for its strike forces that enables more effective forward deterrence and rapid response. A key aspect of this construct is the need for flexible, adaptive command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems. To assist development of this capability, the Navy asked the NRC to examine C4ISR for carrier, expeditionary, and strike and missile defense strike groups, and for expeditionary strike forces. This report provides an assessment of C4ISR capabilities for each type of strike group; recommendations for C4ISR architecture for use in major combat operations; promising technology trends; and an examination of organizational improvements that can enable the recommended architecture.

Book The Expeditionary Strike Group Give Way Carrier Strike Group

Download or read book The Expeditionary Strike Group Give Way Carrier Strike Group written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Expeditionary Strike Group provides the Joint Force Commander with an asset that is unmatched by any other force: an air, sea, and land force ready to be and remain on station to execute missions throughout the range of military operations within the joint, interagency, and coalition environment. The United States Navy touts the Nimitz Class Super Carrier and its Carrier Strike Group as the most powerful weapon within its arsenal. The Carrier Strike Group is a powerful force optimally employed to fight high intensity, traditional operations. However, as the new Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower states, the United States and its partners find themselves competing for global influence in an era in which they are unlikely to be fully at war or fully at peace. The United States must always be prepared to conduct conventional, traditional combat operations, and the Carrier Strike Group has no peer in those operations, but the time has come to recognize the change in the potential adversary. This environment necessitates the reemergence of the amphibious, naval forces, embodied in the Expeditionary Strike Group, as the United States Navy's preeminent force. Why then does the perception still exist that the Expeditionary Strike Group is less capable than the Carrier Strike Group?

First you gotta find a good clean (legible) copy and make sure it's the latest version (not always easy). Some documents found on the web are missing some pages or the image quality is so poor, they are difficult to read. If you find a good copy, you could print it using a network printer you share with 100 other people (typically its either out of paper or toner). If it's just a 10-page document, no problem, but if it's 250-pages, you will need to punch 3 holes in all those pages and put it in a 3-ring binder. Takes at least an hour. It's much more cost-effective to just order the bound paperback from Amazon.com This book includes original commentary which is copyright material. Note that government documents are in the public domain. We print these paperbacks as a service so you don't have to. The books are compact, tightly-bound paperback, full-size (8 1/2 by 11 inches), with large text and glossy covers. 4th Watch Publishing Co. is a HUBZONE SDVOSB. https: //usgovpub.com

Book Anchor of Resolve a History of U S Naval Forces Central Command Fifth Fleet

Download or read book Anchor of Resolve a History of U S Naval Forces Central Command Fifth Fleet written by Robert Schneller and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-05-27 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated history covers the history of the U.S. Navy in the Middle East. America's interests in the Middle East, southwest Asia, and eastern Africa date almost to the founding of the nation. Since World War II, the Navy has been the first line of defense for these interests. From the establishment of the Middle East Force (MEF) in 1949 through the beginning of the 21st century, the U.S. Navy served as a force for stability and peace in the region. The Navy's presence helped prevent regional crises from escalating into wars, enforce international sanctions, and minimize damage done by regional conflicts to American and allied interests. The work concentrates on the Navy's command relationships, roles and missions, and operations in the period leading up to the First Gulf War, the war itself, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Naval Historical Center completed this illustrated history of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/Fifth Fleet to accompany the exhibit it installed in the headquarters building on board Naval Support Activity Bahrain. In keeping with the Center's mission of supporting the operating forces, the purpose of this book is to inform visitors to the headquarters and American Sailors serving in the Middle East about the Navy's presence in Arabian waters and the variety of missions the Navy has conducted there, in peace and in war. From the presidency of George Washington through the beginning of the Cold War, Americans have forged and maintained ties with the peoples of the Middle East. These bonds strengthened in 1949 with the establishment of the Middle East Force and a permanent U.S. naval presence in the Arabian Gulf. They grew even stronger when America committed itself to the defense of its friends in the region, establishing Central Command and its naval component, Naval Forces Central Command, in 1983. The United States Navy remains an anchor of resolve in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the Central Command area of responsibility. The author, Dr. Robert J. Schneller Jr., is well qualified to present this informative and well-illustrated history. He is co-author of a book on the Navy's role in operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and since 9/11 has been researching and writing about the Navy's role in the Global War on terrorism. As with each of our histories, the views expressed herein are those of the author alone and not those of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/Fifth Fleet, the Department of the Navy, or any other U.S. government agency.

Download or read book Sea Basing written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-08-14 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of land bases from which to launch and maintain military, diplomatic, and humanitarian relief operations is becoming increasingly uncertain because of physical or political constraints. The ability to operate from a sea base, therefore, is likely to become more and more important. The Defense Science Board recently concluded that Sea Basing will be a critical future joint military capability and that DOD should proceed to develop such capability. Following the DSB report, the Navy requested that the National Research Council (NRC) convene a workshop to assess the science and technology base, both inside and outside the Navy, for developing Sea Basing and to identify R&D for supporting future concepts. This report of the workshop includes an examination of Sea Basing operational concepts; ship and aircraft technology available to make Sea Basing work; and issues involved in creating the sea base as a joint system of systems.

Book Commandant s Planning Guidance

Download or read book Commandant s Planning Guidance written by General David H. Berger and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commandant's Planning Guidance (CPG) provides the 38th Commandant's strategic direction for the Marine Corps and mirrors the function of the Secretary of Defense's Defense Planning Guidance (DPG). It serves as the authoritative document for Service-level planning and provides a common direction to the Marine Corps Total Force. It also serves as a road map describing where the Marine Corps is going and why; what the Marine Corps force development priorities are and are not; and, in some instances, how and when prescribed actions will be implemented. This CPG serves as my Commandant's Intent for the next four years. As Commandant Neller observed, "The Marine Corps is not organized, trained, equipped, or postured to meet the demands of the rapidly evolving future operating environment." I concur with his diagnosis. Significant change is required to ensure we are aligned with the 2018 National Defense Strategy (NDS) and DPG, and further, prepared to meet the demands of the Naval Fleet in executing current and emerging operational naval concepts. Effecting that change will be my top priority as your 38th Commandant. This CPG outlines my five priority focus areas: force design, warfighting, education and training, core values, and command and leadership. I will use these focal areas as logical lines of effort to frame my thinking, planning, and decision-making at Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC), as well as to communicate to our civilian leadership. This document explains how we will translate those focus areas into action with measurable outcomes. The institutional changes that follow this CPG will be based on a long-term view and singular focus on where we want the Marine Corps to be in the next 5-15 years, well beyond the tenure of any one Commandant, Presidential administration, or Congress. We cannot afford to retain outdated policies, doctrine, organizations, or force development strategies. The coming decade will be characterized by conflict, crisis, and rapid change - just as every decade preceding it. And despite our best efforts, history demonstrates that we will fail to accurately predict every conflict; will be surprised by an unforeseen crisis; and may be late to fully grasp the implications of rapid change around us. The Arab Spring, West African Ebola Outbreak, Scarborough Shoal standoff, Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine, and weaponization of social media are but a few recent examples illustrating the point. While we must accept an environment characterized by uncertainty, we cannot ignore strong signals of change nor be complacent when it comes to designing and preparing the force for the future. What is abundantly clear is that the future operating environment will place heavy demands on our Nation's Naval Services. Context and direction is clearly articulated in the NDS and DPG as well as testimony from our uniformed and civilian leadership. No further guidance is required; we are moving forward. The Marine Corps will be trained and equipped as a naval expeditionary force-in-readiness and prepared to operate inside actively contested maritime spaces in support of fleet operations. In crisis prevention and crisis response, the Fleet Marine Force - acting as an extension of the Fleet - will be first on the scene, first to help, first to contain a brewing crisis, and first to fight if required to do so. The Marine Corps will be the "force of choice" for the President, Secretary, and Combatant Commander - "a certain force for an uncertain world" as noted by Commandant Krulak. No matter what the crisis, our civilian leaders should always have one shared thought - Send in the Marines.

Book General Kenney Reports A Personal History of the Pacific War

Download or read book General Kenney Reports A Personal History of the Pacific War written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Kenney Reports is a classic account of a combat commander in action. General George Churchill Kenney arrived in the South- west Pacific theater in August 1942 to find that his command, if not in a shambles, was in dire straits. The theater commander, General Douglas MacArthur, had no confidence in his air element. Kenney quickly changed this situation. He organized and energized the Fifth Air Force, bringing in operational commanders like Whitehead and Wurtsmith who knew how to run combat air forces. He fixed the logistical swamp, making supply and maintenance supportive of air operations, and encouraging mavericks such as Pappy Gunn to make new and innovative weapons and to explore new tactics in airpower application. The result was a disaster for the Japanese. Kenney's airmen used air power-particularly heavily armed B-25 Mitchell bombers used as commerce destroyers-to savage Japanese supply lines, destroying numerous ships and effectively isolating Japanese garrisons. The classic example of Kenney in action was the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, which marked the attainment of complete Allied air dominance and supremacy over Japanese naval forces operating around New Guinea. In short, Kenney was a brilliant, innovative airman, who drew on his own extensive flying experiences to inform his decision-making. General Kenney Reports is a book that has withstood the test of time, and which should be on the shelf of every airman.

Book Stacking the Deck Staffing for Success at the Operational Level

Download or read book Stacking the Deck Staffing for Success at the Operational Level written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Naval Force doctrinal awareness continues to rise since the cold wars end, and is currently exemplified by SeaPower 21, which provides a vision to more efficiently integrate and project maritime force. However, today's Naval Forces are quite akin in basic structure and staffing as those that sailed in the post-Vietnam era. Technology has brought watershed capability improvements in precision fires and data transmission, but naval forces have not similarly advanced command and control frameworks or operational level processes to keep pace. This paper briefly examines naval force structure since the cold war as well as current operational naval force concepts. Carrier and Expeditionary Strike Groups as well as Expeditionary Strike Force staffing concepts at both the tactical and operational levels of war are covered. Finally the Joint Force Maritime Component Commander Tacmemo 3-32-03 is looked at as an operational level process.

Book Naval Expeditionary Air Power A Justified Capability

Download or read book Naval Expeditionary Air Power A Justified Capability written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent sustained operations provide an excellent example of how the Navy could better support the Joint Force Commander through the use of an expeditionary element of the Carrier Strike Group's airwing. The Navy should formally establish the capability of this tailorable force as a core capability of the CSG that is available to the Combatant Commander or Joint Force Commander upon assignment. This forward deployable element of the CSG's most flexible asset provides for the maximum support of JFACC and JFMCC tasking during the sustained operations, such as the Stability, Security, Transition, and Reconstruction phase. Not only will this formalization give the warfighter the best opportunity to succeed, but it provides the Joint Force Commander a known quantity with established capabilities, limitations and required resources to make the most informed decision on the management of assigned assets.

Download or read book MCDP 1 Warfighting written by USMC and published by . This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MCDP 1 WARFIGHTING Since Fleet Marine Force Manual 1, Warfighting, was first published in 1989, it has had a significant impact both inside and outside the Marine Corps. That manual has changed the way Marines think about warfare. It has caused energetic debate and has been translated into several foreign languages, issued by foreign militaries, and published commercially. It has strongly influenced the development of doctrine by our sister Services. Our current naval doctrine is based on the tenets of maneuver warfare as described in that publication. Current and emerging concepts such as operational maneuver from the sea derive their doctrinal foundation from the philosophy contained in Warfighting. Our philosophy of warfighting, as described in the manual, is in consonance with joint doctrine, contributing to our ability to operate harmoniously with the other Services.

Book Realizing the Potential of C4I

Download or read book Realizing the Potential of C4I written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-06-17 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid progress in information and communications technologies is dramatically enhancing the strategic role of information, positioning effective exploitation of these technology advances as a critical success factor in military affairs. These technology advances are drivers and enablers for the "nervous system" of the militaryâ€"its command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) systemsâ€"to more effectively use the "muscle" side of the military. Authored by a committee of experts drawn equally from the military and commercial sectors, Realizing the Potential of C4I identifies three major areas as fundamental challenges to the full Department of Defense (DOD) exploitation of C4I technologyâ€"information systems security, interoperability, and various aspects of DOD process and culture. The book details principles by which to assess DOD efforts in these areas over the long term and provides specific, more immediately actionable recommendations. Although DOD is the focus of this book, the principles and issues presented are also relevant to interoperability, architecture, and security challenges faced by government as a whole and by large, complex public and private enterprises across the economy.
