Book Expectations and Actions

Download or read book Expectations and Actions written by Norman T. Feather and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-29 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, this book examines the current status of expectancy-value models in psychology. The focus is upon cognitive models that relate action to the perceived attractiveness or aversiveness of expected consequences. A person’s behavior is seen to bear some relation to the expectations the person holds and the subjective value of the consequences that might occur following the action. Despite widespread interest in the expectancy-value (valence) approach at the time, there was no book that looked at its current status and discussed its strengths and its weaknesses, using contributions from some of the theorists who were involved in its original and subsequent development and from others who were influenced by it or had cause to examine the approach closely. This book was planned to meet this need. The chapters in this book relate to such areas as achievement motivation, attribution theory, information feedback, organizational psychology, the psychology of values and attitudes, and decision theory and in some cases they advance the expectancy-value approach further and, in other cases, point to some of its deficiencies.

Book Motivation for Achievement

Download or read book Motivation for Achievement written by M. Kay Alderman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding student and teacher motivation and developing strategies to foster motivation for students at all levels of performance are essential to effective teaching. This text is designed to help prospective and practicing teachers achieve these goals. Its premise is that current research and theory about motivation offer hope and possibilities for educators —teachers, parents, coaches, and administrators—to enhance motivation for achievement. The orientation draws primarily on social-cognitive perspectives that have generated much research relevant to classroom practice. Ideal for any course that is dedicated to, or includes coverage of, motivation and achievement, the text focuses on two key roles teachers play in supporting and cultivating motivation in the classroom: establishing the classroom structure and instruction that provides the environment for optimal motivation, engagement, and learning; and helping students develop the tools that will enable them to be self-regulated learners and develop their potential. Pedagogical features aid the understanding of concepts and the application to practice: Strategy boxes present guidelines and strategies for using the various concepts. Exhibit boxes include forms for different purposes (for example, goal setting), examples of teacher beliefs and practices, and samples of student work. Reflection boxes stimulate readers’ thinking about motivational issues inherent in the topics, their experiences, and their beliefs. A motivational toolbox at the end of each chapter helps readers identify important points to think about, lingering questions, strategies to use now, and strategies to develop in the future. NEW IN THE THIRD EDITION Updated research and new topics are added throughout as warranted by current inquiry in the field. Chapters are reorganized to provide more coherence and to account for new findings. New and updated material is included on issues of educational reform, standards for achievement, and high-stakes testing, and on achievement goal theory, especially regarding performance goals and the distinction between performance-approach and performance-avoidance goals as relevant to classroom practice.

Book Achievement Motivation in the Leadership Role of Extension Agents

Download or read book Achievement Motivation in the Leadership Role of Extension Agents written by Maimunah Ismail and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is relevant to the practice and theory of agricultural extension. In the current context of significant changes in thinking, policy, and expectations, these changes require extension agents to respond to challenges in developing leadership skills to support and encourage changes at farm and household levels. The book has identified the background, personal, and environmental factors influencing achievement motivation in the leadership role of extension agents. The background factors are primary dimensions of diversity and are less amenable to change, exert significant impacts, and shape our basic self-image, sense of identity, and early learning experiences. Researchers often ignore the interdependence of the background factors with other (secondary) dimensions of diversity, in which the latter are changeable personal characteristics that are acquired, and may be modified or abandoned throughout life. Although the secondary dimensions of diversity are more controllable, they will be affected by other people’s decisions, which in this book we see as environmental factors. The reliability and applicability of the above-mentioned theoretical discussions have been tested in an original study involving extension agents in Iran.

Book Exploring Differences in Achievement Motivation in a Diverse Sample of Canadian Students microform

Download or read book Exploring Differences in Achievement Motivation in a Diverse Sample of Canadian Students microform written by Nadine Marcia Dechausay and published by Library and Archives Canada = Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. This book was released on 2004 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between achievement motivation and academic performance, as well as factors predicting these variables, in a diverse sample of 12--15 year old Canadian students. A total of 4,237 students of East Asian, South Asian, Native, African Canadian, and Euro Canadian backgrounds were included in analyses using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth. In general, this study provides modest support for achievement motivation theories, and empirical evidence that Native and African Canadian students may be at-risk with respect to motivation and achievement. The results confirmed a positive correlation between achievement motivation and academic performance. Significant mean differences in achievement motivation and academic performance were found between ethnocultural groups, with East and South Asian students showing the highest outcomes on these measures, and Native and African Canadian students showing the lowest. Positive correlations were found between achievement motivation and several theoretically-meaningful predictor variables.
