This book was released on 2008 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecuadorian society has overcome adversity with great determination over the past few years. Periodic economic crises, external shocks, and even natural disasters tested the country's ability to cope with difficulties. Despite these challenges, the country has maintained a forward looking perspective and has achieved some important goals. Economic stability in the last few years has ushered in a period of sustained economic growth. During this period several development indicators have improved, and several sectors of the economy have demonstrated the dynamism and entrepreneurship that is present in the Ecuadorian culture. Revisiting Ecuador's Economic and Social Agenda in an Evolving Landscape aims to provoke a lively discussion between the World Bank, the new Correa administration, and the entire country, in addressing the unresolved issues that require a thoughtful approach.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecuador, like many developing countries, aims at increasing the role of foreign direct investment (FDI) in its economy, not only through attracting more FDI but also through benefiting from it more in terms of technology, employment, exports, skills and in general competitiveness. The report considers the policies and actions needed to realise Ecuador's considerable FDI potential. It concludes that the success will depend on the effectiveness of the Government's policies relating to: restoring stability and resuming growth; achieving social consensus; further improving the legal framework for investment; implementing a viable privatisation programme; improving physical infrastructure; increasing long-term benefits from FDI; and implementing an investment promotion programme.

Book Civilizing Globalization Revised and Expanded Edition

Download or read book Civilizing Globalization Revised and Expanded Edition written by Richard Sandbrook and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discusses the many facets of globalization and its feasible reform in easy-to-understand language. Is it possible to harness the benefits of economic globalization without sacrificing social equity, ecological sustainability, and democratic governance? The first edition of Civilizing Globalization (2003) explored this question at a time of widespread popular discontent. This fully revised and expanded edition comes at an equally crucial juncture. The period of relative stability and prosperity in the world economy that followed the release of the first edition ended abruptly in 2008 with a worldwide economic crisis that illustrated in dramatic fashion the enduring problems with our global order. Yet despite the gravity of the challenges, concrete initiatives for change remain insubstantial. Richard Sandbrook and Ali Burak Güven bring together international scholars and veteran activists to discuss in clear, nontechnical language the innovative political strategies, participatory institutional frameworks, and feasible regulatory designs capable of taming global markets so that they assume the role of useful servants rather than tyrannical masters. “Civilizing Globalization develops a social democratic vision of globalization and global governance for the twenty-first century. The book presents a powerful case for regulating global markets so that the economy serves society and the environment, not the reverse. It is a wonderful contribution by an eminent group of scholars.” — Ziya Öni?, Koç University
