Book Expanding Career Options for Music Performance Majors Through University Partnerships and Modern Curriculums

Download or read book Expanding Career Options for Music Performance Majors Through University Partnerships and Modern Curriculums written by Marcus J. Rhodes and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pipeline to performance careers and entrepreneurship in the musical arts industry from higher-education institutions is often highly competitive and presents a limited number of opportunities for music performance majors making it difficult to have a realized path to success. A crucial imperative to helping potential professionals in the music industry in modern times threatens traditional higher education music pedagogical practices and encourages new methods of addressing societal needs. Although recent programs of music business and technology have been developed at many schools of music, providing additional skills for performance majors to grasp, there is still a significant number of music performance majors who find it difficult to land significant positions in the music industry. They often succumb to a myriad of alternate occupations that are outside the field of musical arts. This has led to the need to rethink the subject of professionalism in music and how it affects music education (Westerlund, 2022, p. 2). By developing community, corporate, governmental, and nonprofit partnerships, schools of music can increase success and provide more resources to musical art majors, particularly those in performance and music business, by providing internships, professional experiences, and encouraging mandatory industry research for career preparation and success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A valuable resource for musicologists, theorists, pianists, and aestheticians interested in reading about Schumann’s views on virtuosity.” —Notes Considered one of the greatest composers—and music critics—of the Romantic era, Robert Schumann (1810–1856) played an important role in shaping nineteenth-century German ideas about virtuosity. Forging his career in the decades that saw abundant public fascination with the feats and creations of virtuosos (Liszt, Paganini, and Chopin among others), Schumann engaged with instrumental virtuosity through not only his compositions and performances but also his music reviews and writings about his contemporaries. Ultimately, the discourse of virtuosity influenced the culture of Western “art music” well beyond the nineteenth century and into the present day. By examining previously unexplored archival sources, Alexander Stefaniak looks at the diverse approaches to virtuosity Schumann developed over the course of his career, revealing several distinct currents in nineteenth-century German virtuosity and the enduring flexibility of virtuosity discourse.

Book Expanding Professionalism in Music and Higher Music Education

Download or read book Expanding Professionalism in Music and Higher Music Education written by Heidi Westerlund and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-07 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the need to rethink the concept and enactment of professionalism in music, and how such concepts underpin professional higher music education. There is an urgent imperative to enable the potential of professional musicians in our contemporary societies to be more fully realised, recognising both intense challenges that are currently threatening some traditional music practices, and significant scope for new practices to be imagined in response to deep veins of societal need. Professionalism encompasses the conduct, aims, values, responsibilities and ongoing development of a practising professional in the field. Professional higher music education engages both with providing future professionals with relevant education in particular craft skills, and with nurturing their visions for their work as artists in future societies. The major focus of the book is on performance traditions that have dominated professional higher education, notably western classical music.
