Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take a drive through the Mississippi Delta today and you’ll find a landscape dotted with memorials to major figures and events from the civil rights movement. Perhaps the most chilling are those devoted to the murder of Emmett Till, a tragedy of hate and injustice that became a beacon in the fight for racial equality. The ways this event is remembered have been fraught from the beginning, revealing currents of controversy, patronage, and racism lurking just behind the placid facades of historical markers. In Remembering Emmett Till, Dave Tell gives us five accounts of the commemoration of this infamous crime. In a development no one could have foreseen, Till’s murder—one of the darkest moments in the region’s history—has become an economic driver for the Delta. Historical tourism has transformed seemingly innocuous places like bridges, boat landings, gas stations, and riverbeds into sites of racial politics, reminders of the still-unsettled question of how best to remember the victim of this heinous crime. Tell builds an insightful and persuasive case for how these memorials have altered the Delta’s physical and cultural landscape, drawing potent connections between the dawn of the civil rights era and our own moment of renewed fire for racial justice.

Custodians of Lamborghini have included Chrysler and businessmen in Switzerland and Asia. Now Lamborghini sits alongside Bugatti at Audi, part of the Volkswagen Group. Previous Lamborghini books have been little more than collections of pictures of the cars and technical descriptions, but this one describes the character of the men whose passion for Lamborghini kept the company alive. Packed full of inspiring essays, advice on budgeting, eating alone, reducing carbon footprints and dealing with passport privilege and discrimination, as well as Q&A's with travel leaders such as Jessica Nabongo (the first black woman to travel to every country in the world), Annette Richmond (founder of Fat Girls Traveling), Rhiane Fatinikun (founder of Black Girls Hike), and Sasha Sarago (editor and founder of Ascension, Australia’s first Indigenous and ethnic women’s lifestyle magazine), this book is for the conscientious and the curious. Black women understand innately what it means to feel restricted, watched, unwanted. And historically, black female explorers have been overlooked by the travel industry. But social media has spawned a generation of story-tellers and change-makers determined to rewrite their own travel narratives and forcing brands to pay attention - there's never been a better time to situate yourself within the solo travel space! To travel while black and female is therefore to upend, and overcome, legacies of mobility impairment. It is to dispel myths and rewrite history. Black Girls Take World will inspire you to travel alone, help you engage with the world, and aid understanding of your particular experiences abroad. "We travel for ourselves, first and foremost, but attached to our journeys is the potential to rebuke stereotypes, to break moulds, to trace roots, foster inclusivity and give back."

Book excerpt: Why Not? After all, no-one had ever done it before. It would be one of the longest of all overland journeys – half way round the world, from the English Channel to Singapore. They knew that several expeditions had already tried it. Some had got as far as the desrts of Persia; a few had even reached the plains of India. But no one had managed to go on from there: over the jungle clad mountains of Assam and across northern Burma to Thailand and Malaya. Over the last 3,000 miles it seemed there were ‘just too many rivers and too few roads'. But no-one really knew … In fact, their problems began much earlier than that. As mere undergraduates, they had no money, no cars, nothing. But with a cool audacity, which was to become characteristic, they set to work – wheedling and cajoling. First, they coaxed the BBC to come up with some film for a possible TV series. They then gently persuaded the manufacturers to lend them two factory-fresh Land Rovers. A publisher was even sweet-talked into giving them an advance on a book. By the time they were ready to go, their sponsors (more than 80 of them) ranged from whiskey distillers to the makers of collapsible buckets. In late 1955, they set off. Seven months and 12,000 miles later, two very weary Land Rovers, escorted by police outriders, rolled into Singapore – to flash bulbs and champagne. Now, fifty years on, their book, ‘First Overland', is republished – with a foreword by Sir David Attenborough. After all, it was he who gave them that film.

  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Yvain written by Chretien de Troyes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.

Book Russia Under the Old Regime

Download or read book Russia Under the Old Regime written by Richard Pipes and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author traces with compelling detail the evolution of the Russian state, where the Tsar claimed to own the land and its inhabitants as if they were his own personal property. Professor Pipes analyzes the political behavior of Russia's peasantry, nobility and bourgeoisie as well as its clergy, showing why none of them could limit the absolute power of the state. He discusses how the intelligentsia challenged the Tsars' power, leading to increased repression and Russia's development as a bureaucratic police state. This sweeping epic brings Russia's turbulent history to life and helps us better understand the roots of modern Russia.

Book Tat

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andy Altmann
  • Publisher : Circa
  • Release : 2020-11-30
  • ISBN : 9781911422273
  • Pages : 400 pages

Download or read book Tat written by Andy Altmann and published by Circa. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tat* is a bit of a graphic designer's curse. Walk into any design studio and you will see tat pinned to the walls or placed with loving care on top of a computer screen. Even the purist will have a secret cache hidden away somewhere. Andy Altmann began collecting tat while he was on his Foundation course, getting ready for an interview at St Martins School of Art. He'd been asked to present a sketchbook, but worried that he couldn't draw very well, he decided to start a scrapbook: "I rummaged through the drawers at home and found some football cards from the late 1960s and early '70s (plenty of Georgie Best), an instruction leaflet from an old Hoover, Christmas cracker jokes, and so on. Then I started on the magazines, cutting out images of anything that interested me. And finally I took myself off to the college library, where I photocopied things from books before reaching for the scissors and glue." It was the beginning of a significant collecting habit. So what it is that makes a piece of graphic tat interesting? Is it the 'retro' thing - a fascination with a bygone age, the primitive printing techniques, the naivety of the design, or the use of color? All of the above, of course, but it's not quite that simple. "Occasionally people offer me something they've found that they think I might like", says Andy. "But usually they're wrong - it doesn't excite me at all. The magic is missing." To a graphic designer, most the content of this book can safely be regarded as 'bad' design. But there is some magic in each and every piece that has made Andy either pick it up off the street, trail through online links, or enter some dodgy looking shop on the other side of the world just to snap it up. Here you'll find everything from sweet wrappers to flash cards, from soap powder boxes to speedway flyers, from wrestling programmes to bus tickets. More tat than you can shake a stick at. Taken together, it represents a lifetime of gleeful hunting and gathering. * tat (noun) - anything that looks cheap, is of low quality, or in bad condition; junk, rubbish, debris, detritus, crap, shite
