Book Exodus 19 40

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Henry Propp
  • Publisher : Anchor Bible
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 904 pages

Download or read book Exodus 19 40 written by William Henry Propp and published by Anchor Bible. This book was released on 2006 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited conclusion of William H. C. Propp's masterful study of Exodus, this informative, clearly written commentary provides a new perspective on Israelite culture and on the role of ritual, law, and covenant in biblical religion. Exodus 19-40 sets a new standard in biblical scholarship. Thorough and up-to-date, it is the first commentary on Exodus to include critical textual evidence from the recently edited Dead Sea Scrolls. Informed by Propp's deep understanding of ancient cultural mores and religious traditions, it casts new light on the Israelites' arrival at Sinai, their entry into a covenant with God, their reception of the Law, their worship of the golden calf, and their reconciliation to God. The incisive commentary on the building of the Holy Tabernacle-God's wilderness abode-is supplemented by numerous illustrations that clarify the biblical text. Propp extends the scope and relevance of this major work in five appendices that discuss the literary formation of the Torah, the historicity of the Exodus tradition, the origins of Israelite monotheism, the Exodus theme in the Bible, and the future of Old Testament scholarship. By taking an anthropological rather than strictly theological approach, Propp places familiar stories within a fresh context. The result is a fully accessible guide to one of the most important and best known books of the Bible.

Book Your Glory

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philip Powers
  • Publisher : Word Alive Press
  • Release : 2020-12-15
  • ISBN : 1486620647
  • Pages : 199 pages

Download or read book Your Glory written by Philip Powers and published by Word Alive Press. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the blind men who touched different parts of the elephant and thought they knew the whole, we touch just a piece of God's glory and think we know what it is. But we can't agree with each other, so we must not know. Or we try to wrap it up in one big idea: God is great, full of splendour! But does that help? Moses asked God, "Show me your glory!" And God shouts to be known. Yet, just like the boy in The Emperor's New Clothes, a voice inside me cries out, "I don't see it! There must be more!" Do you see and understand God's glory? If we did, we would be terrified, undone, never the same. And I long for you to know it that way, too. This study examines every use of the key words used for glory in the Old Testament and the New. We will see the lie about glory that changed everything. Yet the truth about glory is both dangerous and good. It binds us to God in an indivisible eternal bond. It is our identity and purpose for being. It gives to us a magnificent burden that is just the beginning of seeing and knowing glory.

Book Martin Luther and the Rule of Faith

Download or read book Martin Luther and the Rule of Faith written by Todd R. Hains and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2022-10-11 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Luther considered the reading of God's word to be his primary task as a theologian, a pastor, and a Christian. Though he is often portrayed as reading the Bible with a bare approach of sola Scriptura—without any concern for previous generations’ interpretation—the truth is more complicated. In this New Explorations in Theology (NET) volume, Reformation scholar Todd R. Hains shows that Luther read the Bible according to the rule of faith, which is contained in the church's ancient catechism of the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, and the Apostles' Creed. Hains carefully examines Luther's sermons to show how Luther taught the rule of faith as the guard and guide of Bible reading. This study will helpfully complicate your view of Luther and bring clarity to your own reading of God's Word. Featuring new monographs with cutting-edge research, New Explorations in Theology provides a platform for constructive, creative work in the areas of systematic, historical, philosophical, biblical, and practical theology.

Book The Descent from the Mountain

Download or read book The Descent from the Mountain written by Martin Ravndal Hauge and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 'close reading' of Exodus 19-40 focuses on the repetition of the 'encounter on the mountain'. This double encounter is expressed in a narrative structure of preparatory episodes climaxed by the theophany. The tension of the narrative is linked to 'the people' as the unlikely heroes of encounter and solved by the divine descent from the divine mountain to the man-made tent. The new situation of permanent encounter is foregrounded by the juxtaposed stories of pre- and post- Sinai journey, and the theme of the 'substitution of Moses' underlines a radical reinterpretation of traditional concepts, inviting the reader to embark on a process of identification.

Book The Trinity and the Bible

Download or read book The Trinity and the Bible written by J. Alexander Rutherford and published by Teleioteti. This book was released on 2022-10-14 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To write on the Trinity is to enter a minefield of presuppositions-presuppositions of theology, exegesis, grammar, logic, philosophy, etc. However, at the heart of Godʹs self-revelation in the Bible is God's tri-unity, that God is three, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Confessional Christians would identify this claim, that God is Triune, as a necessary condition of true Christian faith. To be Christian is to follow Christ who is the 2nd person of the Trinity. Yet, does following this Christ mean following the 2nd hypostasis who is eternally begotten of the Father, sharing with him his ousia? That is a more difficult question, isn't it? Indeed, many faithful men and women in my life could not make heads or tails of the latter claim while worshipping and following the Christ of the former. So, what does it mean to be Trinitarian? This book is about that question, what does it mean to be a Christian who worships a triune God, to be ʺTrinitarianʺ? Is the Trinity a doctrine, arrived at through second-order reflection on the Biblical data several hundred years after the canon closed, or is it something else? Is it, perhaps, a presupposition about the reality of God that has shaped the Christain imagination, that has shaped the framework Christians bring to the world, throughout created history?

Book The Laws of the Imperialized

Download or read book The Laws of the Imperialized written by Chung Man Anna Lo and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being the first legal corpus in the biblical canon, Exodus 19–24 is a law collection that belonged to a people living under the shadow of empire. Using an integrated approach of postcolonial studies and historical-comparative analysis, this important study analyzes the relationship between the laws given to the Israelites on Mount Sinai and cuneiform law collections. Dr. Anna Lo skillfully integrates postcolonial understandings of the colonized people to explore how the similarities and differences reflect the imperialized authors’ wrestling with the imperial legal metanarrative and subjugation of their time. This investigation into the dynamic of acceptance, ambivalence, and resistance invites attention to this selection of Scripture as a work of conservative revolutionists. Dr. Lo’s thorough work provides an important way forward for scholars to consider responses of the imperialized to empires in the past as well as to reflect on their own response to hegemonic domination today.
