Book The Lone Brit on 13

Download or read book The Lone Brit on 13 written by Christopher Chance and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-04-13 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lone Brit on 13 is a gripping true story of violence, degradation and adventure penned in the confines of a grim Malaga prison cell. Imprisoned for drug-smuggling, the lone Brit on Wing 13, Chance, reveals the horrors he experienced among cut-throat villains and screws in the netherworld of the Spanish prison system.Chance takes to writing in his dank prison cell in an attempt to escape his surroundings and recalls various episodes in his life: his time serving as a soldier in Thailand and Malaysia; his involvement with the 3 Para snatch-squad in the 1970s Belfast; and his subsequent descent into drug dealing and trafficking, which culminated in a high-speed boat chase and his imprisonment in a top-security Spanish prison. While inside, Chance fought his way to the surface of a cesspool of iniquitous scumbags using his fists: the only effective means of being understood in an environment of desecrated morality and non-existent integrity. With predators lurking everywhere, Chance had to be constantly on guard and in order to survive he had to be mentally prepared to inflict the necessary violent retribution on any would-be attacker or racist thug. As the sole British inmate, Chance was a prime target for the intimidating Spanish hardmen who thrived on cruelty and treachery. But his martial arts skills and Samurai philosophy proved to be more than a match for the aggressors. Once a respected and successful businessman admired by his peers - he had operated his own martial arts business in Spain before being jailed - Chance took one wrong turn in life and lost everything except the love and support of his loyal wife.

In the midst of growing up in a turbulent era which seems less and less stable with each passing day, Gabriel struggles with understanding the world and where he fits in. At least one thing is clear, though. The best way for Gabriel to get from one place to another is simple: the Power of the Thumb. But life gets even more confusing when Gabriel is picked up hitchhiking home from work by an intoxicated senior from a neighboring town -- Daryl Novak, arguably the state's finest all-around athlete. In the ensuing weeks and months, fateful circumstances draw the introspective Gabriel and the troubled Daryl closer together. Quickly the two boys come to depend on each other. But little does Daryl know that Gabriel has a secret connection to him. And little does Gabriel know that his improbable new friendship with Daryl is one that will change him forever.Exit 14 is Gary Scarpa's debut novel. A retired educator and theatre founder, Gary divides his time between writing and his other great passion, music. A child of the 1960s, he continues to explore his relationship to art, spirituality, and politics in an effort to understand the impact these have had and continue to have on his life.

Book Exit Left

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert S. Taylor
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017
  • ISBN : 0198798733
  • Pages : 143 pages

Download or read book Exit Left written by Robert S. Taylor and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can citizens best protect themselves from the arbitrary power of abusive spouses, tyrannical bosses, and corrupt politicians? Exit Left makes the case that in each of these three spheres the answer is the same: exit. By promoting open and competitive markets and providing the information and financial resources necessary to enable exit, the book argues that this can empower people's voices and offer them an escape from abuse and exploitation. This will advance a conception of freedom, viz. freedom as non-domination (FND), which is central to contemporary republican thought. Neo-republicans have typically promoted FND through constitutional means (separation of powers, judicial review, the rule of law, and federalism) and participatory ones (democratic elections and oversight), but this book focuses on economic means, ones that have been neglected by contemporary republicans but were commonly invoked in the older, commercial-republican tradition of Alexander Hamilton, Immanuel Kant, and Adam Smith. Just as Philip Pettit and other neo-republicans have revived and revised classical republicanism, so this book will do the same for commercial republicanism. This revival will enlarge republican practice by encouraging greater use of market mechanisms, even as it hews closely to existing republican theory.
