Book excerpt: If the old existentialism said that existence precedes essence, the new existentialism articulated by The Syntax of the Real says that syntax precedes semantics. As opposed to the history of philosophy, which has been dominated semantico-centric ontologies, The Syntax of Real endeavors to articulate (perhaps the first) syntactic ontology. One of the most important theses of our time was articulated by the late John Haugeland. This thesis states that if you take care of the syntax, the semantics come for free. While Haugeland understood this thesis as one intervening in philosophy of mind and relating to the nature of artificial intelligence, The Syntax of Real both critiques of Haugeland's understand of his own thesis and articulates its actual ontological implications beyond its relevance to the nature of the mental. Our understanding of syntax must be broadened beyond the linguistic determination of this term if we are to grasp the nature of the real. After detailing the inherent problems of semantic ontologies, this manuscript deduces the very nature of the real from the point of departure of all post-Cartesian thought-the cogito. Semantic nihilism is not advocated. Rather as opposed to other theories of the semantic, a theory of operational semantics is elucidated. The Syntax of the Real articulates its vision both via engagement with well-known philosophers (for instance, the neo-Meinongian theories of the wunderkinder of contemporary European Philosophy, Markus Gabriel and Tristan Garcia, are subjected to critique) as well as pop culture (for example, an episode of the original Star Trek is analyzed and an engagement with the recent film Arrival makes up the conclusion). Unaccusativity is an extended investigation into a set of linguistic phenomena that have received much attention over the last fifteen years. Besides providing extensive support for David Perlmutter's hypothesis that unaccusativity is syntactically represented but semantically determined, this monograph contributes significantly to the development of a theory of lexical semantic representation and to the elucidation of the mapping from lexical semantics to syntax. Perlmutter's Unaccusative Hypothesis proposes that there are two classes of intransitive verbs - unergatives and unaccusatives - each associated with a distinct syntactic configuration. Unaccusativity begins by isolating the semantic factors that determine whether a verb will be unaccusative or unergative through a careful examination of the behavior of intransitive verbs from a range of semantic classes in diverse syntactic constructions. Notable are the extensive discussions of verbs of motion, verbs of emission, and various types of verbs of change of state. The authors then introduce rules that determine the syntactic expression of the arguments of the verbs investigated and examine the interactions among them. The proper treatment of verbs that systematically show multiple meanings - and hence variable classification as unaccusative or unergative - is also considered. In the final chapter, the authors argue that the distribution of locative inversion, a purported unaccusative diagnostic, is determined instead by discourse considerations. Like many languages, the system of Classical Hebrew copular sentences is quite complex, containing zero, pronominal, and verbal forms as well as eventive and inchoative semantics. Approaching this subject from the framework of Distributed Morphology provides an elegant and comprehensive explanation for both the syntactic and semantic variation in these sentences. This book also presents a theoretical model for analyzing copular sentences in other languages included related phenomena– such as pseudo-copulas. It is also a demonstration of what can be gained by applying modern linguistic analyses to dead languages. Citing and building off previous studies on this topic, this book will be of interest to those interested in the theoretical examination of copular and existential sentences and to those interested in Classical Hebrew more specifically.

Book excerpt: The most general goal of this book is to propose and illustrate a program of research in word semantics that combines some of the methodology and results in linguistic semantics, primarily that of the generative semantics school, with the rigorously formalized syntactic and semantic framework for the analysis of natural languages developed by Richard Montague and his associates, a framework in which truth and denotation with respect to a model are taken as the fundamental semantic notions. I hope to show, both from the linguist's and the philosopher's point of view, not only why this synthesis can be undertaken but also why it will be useful to pursue it. On the one hand, the linguists' decompositions of word meanings into more primitive parts are by themselves inherently incomplete, in that they deal only in distinctions in meaning without providing an account of what mean ings really are. Not only can these analyses be made complete by a model theoretic semantics, but also such an account of these analyses renders them more exact and more readily testable than they could ever be otherwise.

The key to the solution of the puzzle is the idea that the participial affix -n-/-t- and the agreement inflections are not just pieces of morphology inserted post-syntactically, but true heads that enter the computation and are able to manipulate the argumental roles of the verb and to check the EPP. The author’s proposal is properly framed in the context of current debate on interlanguage variation.
