Book The Little r Museums of Paris

Download or read book The Little r Museums of Paris written by Emma Jacobs and published by Running Press Adult. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover a new side of Paris, hidden in plain sight, with this beautifully illustrated guide to the city's smaller collections and best-kept secrets, from artists' studios to scientific museums. A visit to Paris can often seem like a highlight reel -- the Louvre, the Musee d'Orsay, the Eiffel Tower. But Paris isn't only about the big attractions; in fact, some might say it's the offbeat destinations that hold the greatest treasures. The Little(r) Museums of Paris takes a whimsical journey through these smaller destinations, from the fantastical to the bizarre, offering both a guide to the city and inspiration for armchair travelers. Rather than traveling by neighborhood, this charming guide explores the different types of institutions nestled within Paris, from time capsules like the Musee Nissim de Camondo to explorations of the world beyond the city limits, including the Institute of the Arab World. Readers will peek behind the curtains of artists' apartments and into the microscopes of collections of scientific oddities. Each entry opens up a new world of adventure, with a description of the museum's collection, as well as a short history, watercolor illustrations, and a miniature map. For residents and visitors alike, the captivating illustrations and deeply-researched yet approachable writing will encourage greater appreciation of the cultural diversity, history, and colorful characters that give Paris that je ne sais quoi.

Book Literary Exiles from Nazi Germany

Download or read book Literary Exiles from Nazi Germany written by Johannes Franciscus Evelein and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2014 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captures the learning process of Nazi-era literary exiles following in the footsteps of legendary literary exemplars of exile. Exile is as old as humanity itself but a radically new fate for the "novice" exile, who falls into a world about which personal experience can tell him nothing. He does, however, know a great number of stories -- myths, legends, allegories, biblical or historical accounts -- about exile. The novice's search for a foothold initiates a learning process in which the exilic tradition assumes a major role. The present book captures this learning process: it is a cultural history of exile as it was experienced by thousands of German and Austrian writers and intellectuals who opposed National Socialism: among them Brecht, Canetti, Seghers, Remarque, the Manns, and Ludwig Marcuse. It shows how, slowly, exile becomes a reality through the growing awareness of -- and reference to -- the exemplary figures of a shared fate. Scores of fellow travelers, from the mythic figures Odysseus and Ahasverus ("The EternalJew") to writers such as Heinrich Heine and Victor Hugo, frame the experience of exile, imbuing it with meaning, giving it depth, and even elevating it to a "High Moral Office." They frequently make appearances in the narratives of the Nazi-era exiles. The Russian-American exile poet Joseph Brodsky called writers in exile "retrospective and retroactive beings." What their retrospective gazes yield as they search for meaning in banishment is at the heart ofthis book.. Johannes F. Evelein is Professor of Language and Culture Studies at Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut.

Download or read book A Dream of Stone written by Michael D. Garval and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With democratization of fame in the wake of the French Revolution, writers enjoyed ever greater celebrity status. But in nineteenth-century France, the availability and perceived impermanence of such renown cheapened it, and prompted longing for enduring fame, exemplified by monuments - commemorative sculptural or architectural works, helping a nation in flux define itself, its past, and anticipated future. Within this cultural climate, there evolved an ideal of great writers and their work as immortal, that envisioned literary greatness through the metaphor of monuments and monumentality. study draws upon wide-ranging evidence, from journalism to poetry, caricature to statuary. Focusing on the lives, work, and fame of Honore de Balzac, George Sand, and Victor Hugo, it uncovers the salient features, and traces the rise and fall of this monumentalizing vision of literary greatness, largely forgotten today yet so central to nineteenth-century French culture. Book On the Way

    Book Details:
  • Author : James J. Rawls
  • Publisher : WestBow Press
  • Release : 2018-05-29
  • ISBN : 1973628643
  • Pages : 438 pages

Download or read book On the Way written by James J. Rawls and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Way is a book of reflections on one man’s journey of faith. Its origins lie in the universal longing of humankind for something beyond ourselves, for something once present that has diminished with the passing of time. This presence now is sensed only fleetingly, yet the longing persists. The title of the book has a double meaning. On the Way refers to the journey of faith, our lifelong pilgrimage from God and to God. But it also points to the one who leads us on this journey, the one who says: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” On the Way is a collection of one hundred devotional readings, reminiscent of Spurgeon’s classic Morning and Evening Daily Readings and the Benedictine Lectio Divina. It is intended to stir within the reader some forward movement in their own journey of faith. What people are saying about On the Way: “James J. Rawls draws on wisdom from across the ages. Here he shares his ongoing conversation with these many voices within the framework of a deep personal and practical faith. This book is a great gift and blessing!” —The Rt. Rev. Barry L. Beisner, VII Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California “This is a wonderful book—beautifully written, insightful, and filled with wisdom and warmth.” —Gil Bailie, founder of The Cornerstone Forum and author of God’s Gamble: The Gravitational Power of Crucified Love (2016) “James Rawls has a capacity for clarity of thought and graceful articulation that the reader will find fully present in these meditations. Savor, consume and digest them. Repeat again and again.” —The Rev. L. Ann Hallisey, D.Min., Professional Coach and Organization Consultant, former Dean of Students, Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Berkeley
