Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exiles in Babylon, or Children of Light I offer this little work to the public with a deep feeling that in attempting to draw some of the practical lessons afforded Oby the history of Daniel, I have done what I could, and not what I would. I have found the task more difficult than I had expected. The high integrity, piety, and courage of the prophet are virtues which in all ages adorn the children of light, but they were shown by Daniel under circumstances so peculiar, that there is some danger of its being for gotten that the prophet whom we reverence, is also an example whom we should copy. To us Visions are not granted, but the hope of Daniel 3 our hope; for as miracles are not worked, but the wonders of redeeming love are made known to as even more clearly. Her magnificent eyes, deep and liquid with light, looked not to Babylon with desire for its destruction. She dreamed rather of love than of hatred, as is the way of women, and, in her reveries, betook herself to desires that were 'not broad and far-reaching, national, and of consequence to the many, but to those that were personal, limited, and of im portance to herself, and to the one or two whose lives were at this time bound with hers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Exiles: A Tale IN sending these pages into the world, I would wish, before everything else, to guard myself against the supposition that, in the background on which their contents are drawn, I have intended to give a picture of North America. As such, my book would be in the highest degree imperfect. It is not a, picture of America which I would here unroll before my readers, but American pictures, as, in my experience of many years, I have beheld them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books of the Hebrew Bible were either composed in some form or edited during the Exilic and post-Exilic periods among a community that was to identify itself as returning from Babylonian captivity. At the same time, a dearth of contemporary written evidence from Judah/Yehud and its environs renders any particular understanding of the process within its social, cultural and political context virtually impossible. This has led some to label the period a dark age or black box – as obscure as it is essential for understanding the history of Judaism. In recent years, however, archaeologists and historians have stepped up their effort to look for and study material remains from the period and integrate the local history of Yehud, the return from Exile, and the restoration of Jerusalem’s temple more firmly within the regional, and indeed global, developments of the time. At the same time, Assyriologists have also been introducing a wide range of cuneiform material that illuminates the economy, literary traditions, practices of literacy and the ideologies of the Babylonian host society – factors that affected those taken into Exile in variable, changing and multiple ways. This volume of essays seeks to exploit these various advances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic novel set in the rugged interior of British Columbia, the first volume of a trilogy which traces the lives of four generations of a family of exiles. Beginning in 1900, and concluding with the climactic events leading up to the Millennium, the series follows Anne and Stephen Delaney and their descendants as they live through the tumultuous events of this century. Anne is a highly educated Englishwoman who arrives in British Columbia at the end of the First World War. Raised in a family of spiritualists and Fabian socialists, she has fled civilization in search of adventure. She meets and eventually marries a trapper-homesteader, an Irish immigrant who is fleeing the "troubles" in his own violent past. This is a story about the gradual movement of souls from despair and unbelief to faith, hope, and love, about the psychology of perception, and about the ultimate questions of life, death and the mystery of being. Interwoven with scenes from Ireland, England, Poland, Russia, and Belgium during the War, Strangers and Sojourners is a tale of the extraordinary hidden within the ordinary. It is about courage and fear, and the triumph of the human spirit.
