Book excerpt: The International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) was established as a means of raising worldwide public and political awareness of the vast, though frequently under-used, potential the Earth Sciences possess for improving the quality of life of the peoples of the world and safeguarding Earth’s rich and diverse environments. The International Year project was jointly initiated in 2000 by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and the Earth Science Division of the United Nations Educational, Scienti?c and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). IUGS, which is a Non-Governmental Organisation, and UNESCO, an Inter-Governmental Orga- sation, already shared a long record of productive cooperation in the natural sciences and their application to societal problems, including the International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) now in its fourth decade. With its main goals of raising public awareness of, and enhancing research in the Earth sciences on a global scale in both the developed and less-developed countries of the world, two operational programmes were demanded. In 2002 and 2003, the Series Editors together with Dr. Ted Nield and Dr. Henk Schalke (all four being core members of the Management Team at that time) drew up outlines of a Science and an Outreach Programme. In 2005, following the UN proclamation of 2008 as the United Nations International Year of Planet Earth, the “Year” grew into a triennium (2007–2009).

Book Moon face and Other Stories

Download or read book Moon face and Other Stories written by Jack London and published by IndyPublish.com. This book was released on 1906 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JACK LONDON (1876-1916), American novelist, born in San Francisco, the son of an itinerant astrologer and a spiritualist mother. He grew up in poverty, scratching a living in various legal and illegal ways -robbing the oyster beds, working in a canning factory and a jute mill, serving aged 17 as a common sailor, and taking part in the Klondike gold rush of 1897. This various experience provided the material for his works, and made him a socialist. "The son of the Wolf" (1900), the first of his collections of tales, is based upon life in the Far North, as is the book that brought him recognition, "The Call of the Wild" (1903), which tells the story of the dog Buck, who, after his master ́s death, is lured back to the primitive world to lead a wolf pack. Many other tales of struggle, travel, and adventure followed, including "The Sea-Wolf" (1904), "White Fang" (1906), "South Sea Tales" (1911), and "Jerry of the South Seas" (1917). One of London ́s most interesting novels is the semi-autobiographical "Martin Eden" (1909). He also wrote socialist treatises, autobiographical essays, and a good deal of journalism.

Download or read book Thomas Gustave Plant written by Martha Grover and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thoroughly researched and insightful look at the life of Thomas Gustave Plant (1859-1941) who built a spectacular country house estate on more than 6000 acres in Moultonborough, NH. His estate, Lucknow, more commonly known as "Castle in the Clouds" is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The book provides a fascinating story of Plant's meteoric rise in the world of business. Beginning with an 8th grade education, he became known as a hard-headed, shrewd and courageous leader in the world of shoe manufacture. In an effort to avoid the monopolistic leasing practices of United Shoe Manufacturing Corporation, Tom secretly designed a complete line of shoe manufacturing machinery and with his Wonder Worker Shoe Machinery Company launched the "Shoe Machinery Wars". The later sale of his companies to United Shoe brought Tom great wealth. The United Shoe leasing practices which had been initially approved by United Shoe Board member Louis Brandeis became the subject of numerous lawsuits. Tom's marriage to Carolyn Griggs and their subsequent divorce is well documented as is their participation in the sporting world. Tom subsequently marries Olive Dewey and together they build their country estate. Plant had great vision for using his wealth. He built and endowed a retirement home for seniors in Bath, Maine. That home continues to be a vital resource today. He also built Bald Peak Colony Club, a highly regarded private country club with major affiliations around the country. Unfortunately, the financial burden of his three major projects coupled with global financial reverses left him in debt in his later years.
