Book excerpt: Due to the technological advances of the nineteenth century, an abundance of black drawing media exploded onto the market. Charcoal, conte crayon, and fabricated black chalks and crayons; fixatives; various papers; and many lifting devices gave rise to an unprecedented amount of experimentation. Indeed, innovation became the rule, as artists developed their own unique—and often experimental—processes. The exploration of black media in drawing is inextricably bound up with the exploration of black in prints, and this volume presents an integrated study that rises above specialization in one over the other. Noir brings together such diverse artists as Francisco de Goya, Maxime Lalanne, Gustave Courbet, Odilon Redon, and Georges Seurat and explores their inventive works on paper. Sidelining labels like “conservative” or “avant-garde,” the essays in this book employ all the tools that art history and modern conservation have given us, inviting the reader to look more broadly at the artists’ methods and materials. This volume accompanies an eponymous exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from February 9 to May 15, 2016.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a survey of the remarkable quality and range of the Cleveland Museum of Art's collection of French drawings, one of the best such collections in the United States Nineteenth-Century French Drawings explores the history of this medium, and chronicles the remarkable part it has played throughout the past decades at the Cleveland Museum of Art. There are works by such iconic artists as Honoré Daumier, Berthe Morisot and Auguste Renoir, a luminous coloured pencil study by symbolist artist Alexandre Séon and a group of "noir" drawings--named for their use of varied black drawing media--by Henri Fantin-Latour, Albert-Charles Lebourg and Adolphe Appian, among others. Entries illuminate the role of drawing within 41 artists' works and five essays by leading scholars shed new light on the making and collecting of drawings in France during this extraordinary period. In nineteenth-century France, drawing expanded from a means of artistic training to an independent medium with rich potential for experimentation. A variety of new materials became available to artists, encouraging figures ranging from Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres to Paul Cezanne to reconsider drawing's place within their practice. Public and private exhibition venues increasingly began to display their works, building an audience attracted by the intimacy of drawings and their unique techniques and subjects.

Book Nineteenth Century French Drawings from the Robert Lehman Collection

Download or read book Nineteenth Century French Drawings from the Robert Lehman Collection written by George Szabo and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhibition of nineteenth-century French drawings continues the series that will eventually bring all the drawings in the Robert Lehman Collection to public view. Among these eighty-five sheets are drawings in various media, including watercolor, representing the most important French masters of the century as well as lesser-known French artists. Important groups of portraits by Ingres and Chassriau demonstrate the high standards of draftsmanship in force at the beginning of the century. The landscape drawings by the masters of the Barbizon School comprise another outstanding assembly. Boudin and Rousseau are especially well represented among the Barbizon sheets, the former with an unusual large landscape in variations of gray. Drawings by the Impressionists are again outstanding: the groups by Renoir and Degas and important single sheets by such artists as Bazille, Morisot, and Pissarro form the greatest part of the exhibition. The black-and-white studies of Seurat and Redon and a group of radiant watercolors by Cross complete this survey of nineteenth-century draftsmanship in France. The catalogue is restricted to giving the basic information on each drawing. In addition, unpublished versos are reproduced here for the first time. The bibliographies are short and limited to catalogues raisonns and basic publications. (This book was originally published in 1980/81.)

Download or read book The Essence of Line written by Jay McKean Fisher and published by Pennsylvania State University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rarely seen drawings and watercolors by some of the most influential French artists of the nineteenth century are the subject of this richly illustrated publication from The Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Museum. From revealing preparatory sketches to exquisite finished watercolors, more than 100 works by artists such as Eugene Delacroix, Honore Daumier, Paul Cezanne, and Edgar Degas illuminate the range of French art over the course of a century of innovation. The BMA and the Walters have combined holdings of more than 900 French drawings from the nineteenth century, one of the nation's strongest and richest collections of French art from this period. The publication also includes works from the Peabody Institute Art Collection of the Maryland State Archives. The Essence of Line offers the first comprehensive discussion of the formation of these collections and their significance for the history of French art. The catalogue includes essays by Jay McKean Fisher, William R. Johnston, and Cheryl K. Snay that provide insights into the artistic, commercial, and social functions that drawings served for their creators and collectors, as well as how collecting patterns influenced the development of modernism. Conservator Kimberly Schenck bridges the worlds of the collector and of the artist by examining the production and the use of drawing materials in an epoch of radical changes in technique as well as style. Published on the occasion of an exhibition jointly organized by The Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Museum, this book presents a panorama of sketches, watercolors, and presentation drawings, many of them little known outside a small circle of experts. It is correlated with an online database of more than 900 nineteenth-century French drawings in the holdings of these Baltimore museums.
