Book excerpt: Global Conceptualism: Points of Origin, 1950s-1980s challenges the canonical perception that conceptual art was simply one movement which spread internationally and acknowledges the important local circumstances which gave birth to conceptualist art in regions around the world. This book traces the history of this key development in 20th-century art which was marked by a shift from a consideration of the object to that of the idea. Covering three decades of idea-based art, this book features works by more than 135 artists from Asia, Western Europe and Eastern Europe, Latin America, North America, the Soviet Union (Russia), Africa, and Australia and New Zealand. Book excerpt: Potts also offers a detailed view of selected iconic works by sculptors ranging from Antonio Canova and Auguste Rodin to Constantin Brancusi, David Smith, Carl Andre, Eva Hesse and Louise Bourgeois - key players in modern thinking about the sculptural. The impact of minimalism features prominently in this discussion, for it disrupted accepted understanding of how a viewer interacts with a work of art, thereby placing the phenomenology of viewing three-dimensional objects for the first time at the center of debate about modern visual art."--Jacket.

Book Essays on Art and Language

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles Harrison
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2003-09-12
  • ISBN : 9780262582414
  • Pages : 350 pages

Download or read book Essays on Art and Language written by Charles Harrison and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2003-09-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical and theoretical essays by a long-time participant in the Art & Language movement. These essays by art historian and critic Charles Harrison are based on the premise that making art and talking about art are related enterprises. They are written from the point of view of Art & Language, the artistic movement based in England—and briefly in the United States—with which Harrison has been associated for thirty years. Harrison uses the work of Art & Language as a central case study to discuss developments in art from the 1950s through the 1980s. According to Harrison, the strongest motivation for writing about art is that it brings us closer to that which is other than ourselves. In seeing how a work is done, we learn about its achieved identity: we see, for example, that a drip on a Pollock is integral to its technical character, whereas a drip on a Mondrian would not be. Throughout the book, Harrison uses specific examples to address a range of questions about the history, theory, and making of modern art—questions about the conditions of its making and the nature of its public, about the problems and priorities of criticism, and about the relations between interpretation and judgment.

Book The Art of Mechanical Reproduction

Download or read book The Art of Mechanical Reproduction written by Tamara Trodd and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of Mechanical Reproduction presents a striking new approach to how traditional art mediums—painting, sculpture, and drawing—changed in the twentieth century in response to photography, film, and other technologies. Countering the modernist view that the medium provides advanced art with “resistance” against technological pressures, Tamara Trodd argues that we should view art and its practices as imaginatively responding to the potential that artists glimpsed in mechanical reproduction, putting art into dialogue with the commercial cultures of its time. The Art of Mechanical Reproduction weaves a rich history of the experimental networks in which artists as diverse as Paul Klee, Hans Bellmer, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Smithson, Gerhard Richter, Chris Marker, and Tacita Dean have worked, and it shows for the first time how extensively technological innovations of the moment have affected their work. Original and broad-ranging, The Art of Mechanical Reproduction challenges some of the most respected and entrenched criticism of the past several decades—and allows us to think about these artists anew.
