Book The Practice of Criticism

Download or read book The Practice of Criticism written by D. H. Rawlinson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1968-11-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people associate 'practical criticism' with a short-sighted brand of literary analysis which kills a student's interest in literature by drilling him to concentrate narrowly on verbal detail. Handled properly, however, practical criticism can play a vital part in a literature course, especially in the crucial stages in the last years at schools or first university year when many students are coming to literature seriously for the first time. This 1968 book is a useful introduction to practical criticism for students. It offers an impressive range of closely analysed passages and exercises, in prose and verse. Mr Rawlinson considers the problems of the beginner, and discussed the mistakes an misconceptions that sometimes spoil practical criticism courses. In his general discussion of topics such as rhythm, tone and imagery, the author is careful not to be too abstract; throughout the book precept is reinforced by example, theory by practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new interpretation of some of the great works of Chinese fiction of the late Ming dynasty In this book, Andrew Plaks reinterprets the great texts of Chinese fiction known as the “Four Masterworks of the Ming Novel” (ssu ta ch'i-shu). Arguing that these are far more than collections of popular narratives, Plaks shows that their fullest critical revisions represent a sophisticated new genre of Chinese prose fiction arising in the late Ming dynasty, especially in the sixteenth century. He then analyzes these radical transformations of prior source materials, which reflect the values and intellectual concerns of the literati of the period.

Book Freud in Cambridge

Download or read book Freud in Cambridge written by John Forrester and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freud may never have set foot in Cambridge - that hub for the twentieth century's most influential thinkers and scientists - but his intellectual impact there in the years between the two World Wars was immense. This is a story that has long languished untold, buried under different accounts of the dissemination of psychoanalysis. John Forrester and Laura Cameron present a fascinating and deeply textured history of the ways in which a set of Freudian ideas about the workings of the human mind, sexuality and the unconscious affected Cambridge men and women - from A. G. Tansley and W. H. R. Rivers to Bertrand Russell, Bernal, Strachey and Wittgenstein - shaping their thinking across a range of disciplines, from biology to anthropology, and from philosophy to psychology, education and literature. Freud in Cambridge will be welcomed as a major intervention by literary scholars, historians and all readers interested in twentieth-century intellectual and scientific life.

Each chapter is an original contribution which has been specifically commissioned for this book, and together they document the wide range of concerns and techniques which characterise the discipline at the turn of the century. Discourse and Social Life is concerned with a variety of different types of data - talk, text and interaction - and covers research sites which range from the home setting through the health care setting and the courtroom to the public sphere. The book not only provides a critical, historical overview of different traditions of discourse analysis, but also projects to some extent the possible developments of this field of study, as other allied disciplines (Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Rhetoric and Communication Studies) are taking a discursive turn. Readers are invited to draw parallels between these different approaches to studying discourse in its social context.
