Book Poetry and the Making of the English Literary Past 1660 1781

Download or read book Poetry and the Making of the English Literary Past 1660 1781 written by Richard G. Terry and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentrating on the period 1660-1781, this book explores how the English literary past was made. It charts how antiquarians unearthed the raw materials of the English (or more widely) British tradition; how scholars drafted narratives about the development of native literature; and howcritics assigned the leading writers to canons of literary greatness. Poetry and the Making of the English Literary Past also analyzes the various kinds of occasion on which the contents of the literary past are rehearsed. Discussed, for example, is the rise of Poets' Corner as a national shrine forthe consecration of literary worthies; and the author also considers a wide range of poetic genres that lent themselves to recitals of the literary past: the funeral elegy, the progress-of-poesy poem and the session of the poets poem. The book concludes that the opening up and ordering of theEnglish literary past occurs earlier than is generally supposed; and the same also applies to the process by which women writers achieve their own distinctive form of canonical recognition.

Book The Joseph Johnson Letterbook

Download or read book The Joseph Johnson Letterbook written by Joseph Johnson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Joseph Johnson Letterbook is the first scholarly edition of the correspondence of the influential publisher Joseph Johnson (1738-1809). Best known today for his work with politically progressive figures such as Mary Wollstonecraft and Joseph Priestley, over the course of his career Johnson was involved in the publication of thousands of works on a breathtaking range of subjects, from travel narratives to scientific writing to children's books. Johnson was also something of an impresario, and given his active involvement in shaping the books he published, he appears in the longue durée of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British print culture as a gateway figure in the slow transition from patronage to marketplace. The Joseph Johnson Letterbook brings into print for the first time over two hundred of Johnson's letters from archives around the world.

Download or read book Unitarian Radicalism written by Stuart Andrews and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-12-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unitarian confrontation with the late eighteenth-century political establishment is reflected in published sermons, pamphlets and parliamentary debates. Price and Priestley were only the most notorious members of a well-educated, close-knit and highly articulate intellectual opposition, all the more formidable for dominating the major literary reviews. Focusing on many lesser-known dissenting polemicists, this study uncovers unexpected continuities in Unitarian critiques of government policies an questions whether Burke was justified in equating antitrinitarians with French republicans.
