Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebra: Chapter 0 is a self-contained introduction to the main topics of algebra, suitable for a first sequence on the subject at the beginning graduate or upper undergraduate level. The primary distinguishing feature of the book, compared to standard textbooks in algebra, is the early introduction of categories, used as a unifying theme in the presentation of the main topics. A second feature consists of an emphasis on homological algebra: basic notions on complexes are presented as soon as modules have been introduced, and an extensive last chapter on homological algebra can form the basis for a follow-up introductory course on the subject. Approximately 1,000 exercises both provide adequate practice to consolidate the understanding of the main body of the text and offer the opportunity to explore many other topics, including applications to number theory and algebraic geometry. This will allow instructors to adapt the textbook to their specific choice of topics and provide the independent reader with a richer exposure to algebra. Many exercises include substantial hints, and navigation of the topics is facilitated by an extensive index and by hundreds of cross-references.

Book excerpt: Finally a self-contained, one volume, graduate-level algebra text that is readable by the average graduate student and flexible enough to accommodate a wide variety of instructors and course contents. The guiding principle throughout is that the material should be presented as general as possible, consistent with good pedagogy. Therefore it stresses clarity rather than brevity and contains an extraordinarily large number of illustrative exercises.

Book Modern Classical Homotopy Theory

Download or read book Modern Classical Homotopy Theory written by Jeffrey Strom and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-01-19 with total page 862 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The core of classical homotopy theory is a body of ideas and theorems that emerged in the 1950s and was later largely codified in the notion of a model category. This core includes the notions of fibration and cofibration; CW complexes; long fiber and cofiber sequences; loop spaces and suspensions; and so on. Brown's representability theorems show that homology and cohomology are also contained in classical homotopy theory. This text develops classical homotopy theory from a modern point of view, meaning that the exposition is informed by the theory of model categories and that homotopy limits and colimits play central roles. The exposition is guided by the principle that it is generally preferable to prove topological results using topology (rather than algebra). The language and basic theory of homotopy limits and colimits make it possible to penetrate deep into the subject with just the rudiments of algebra. The text does reach advanced territory, including the Steenrod algebra, Bott periodicity, localization, the Exponent Theorem of Cohen, Moore, and Neisendorfer, and Miller's Theorem on the Sullivan Conjecture. Thus the reader is given the tools needed to understand and participate in research at (part of) the current frontier of homotopy theory. Proofs are not provided outright. Rather, they are presented in the form of directed problem sets. To the expert, these read as terse proofs; to novices they are challenges that draw them in and help them to thoroughly understand the arguments.

Book Exercises in Arithmetic

Download or read book Exercises in Arithmetic written by G. A. Wentworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Arithmetic The objects to be attained in the study of Arithmetic are mental discipline and practical mastery of the subject. These objects are best secured by solving problems that are progressive in character and grouped under a few general heads. This collection of problems is not intended to supplant text-books in Arithmetic, but to supplement them. A great number and variety of examples are given under each head, for the express purpose of enabling a teacher to select such as are specially adapted to the needs of his classes. The examples are, in the main, practical; that is, similar to examples that occur in the ordinary affairs of life; and many of them give accurate and interesting information. The authors will be glad to receive information in regard to errors, and suggestions for improving the work. Book Mathematics for Machine Learning

Download or read book Mathematics for Machine Learning written by Marc Peter Deisenroth and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental mathematical tools needed to understand machine learning include linear algebra, analytic geometry, matrix decompositions, vector calculus, optimization, probability and statistics. These topics are traditionally taught in disparate courses, making it hard for data science or computer science students, or professionals, to efficiently learn the mathematics. This self-contained textbook bridges the gap between mathematical and machine learning texts, introducing the mathematical concepts with a minimum of prerequisites. It uses these concepts to derive four central machine learning methods: linear regression, principal component analysis, Gaussian mixture models and support vector machines. For students and others with a mathematical background, these derivations provide a starting point to machine learning texts. For those learning the mathematics for the first time, the methods help build intuition and practical experience with applying mathematical concepts. Every chapter includes worked examples and exercises to test understanding. Programming tutorials are offered on the book's web site.

Book Selected Exercises in Algebra

Download or read book Selected Exercises in Algebra written by Rocco Chirivì and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first of two volumes, contains over 250 selected exercises in Algebra which have featured as exam questions for the Arithmetic course taught by the authors at the University of Pisa. Each exercise is presented together with one or more solutions, carefully written with consistent language and notation. A distinguishing feature of this book is the fact that each exercise is unique and requires some creative thinking in order to be solved. The themes covered in this volume are: mathematical induction, combinatorics, modular arithmetic, Abelian groups, commutative rings, polynomials, field extensions, finite fields. The book includes a detailed section recalling relevant theory which can be used as a reference for study and revision. A list of preliminary exercises introduces the main techniques to be applied in solving the proposed exam questions. This volume is aimed at first year students in Mathematics and Computer Science.
