Book Exercises in Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Exercises in Agriculture Classic Reprint written by S. H. Dadisman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Agriculture The exercises contained in this book have been tried in high schools by the author. They are recommended for the laboratory work in a one-year course in agriculture. There should be two laboratory periods each week for this work if possible. The value of having each pupil do the individual exercises cannot be over-emphasized. Seeing and noting the results, is believing, in laboratory work. These exercises should accompany the regular class work. The exercises selected are simple and practical, and require but little equipment. Many such exercises have been tried out by the author, in his practice teaching work in agriculture. All those that have been found too difficult for the practice teacher to perform have been eliminated, so that the ones here given can be taught by the average high school teacher. The teacher, can select from this list the ones that are best suited to the local conditions. Every exercise in this book can be performed in the average high school with a limited amount of equipment. The equipment should be sufficient, however, for the size of the class. No pupil can perform exercises without the needed equipment any more than a mechanic can do his work without tools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Exercises in Agriculture For a long time the author has felt the need of a book to put in the hands of the rural teacher as a guide in showing the children the real value of agri cultural work in the laboratory. The true teacher feels that all the explanation needed should be given and no more. It should be given in a plain, clear cut way. The teacher can take this book and use it even if she has not had any work on agriculture. The equipment is simple, so simple that any country school can get it. The things that are used are also practical. This book aims to tell of the things that the child should know in order to become interested in the farm life. The school work is made significant by having the children actually doing the things them selves. The farmer demands that his boy should know how to do things, and there is no better place than the laboratory to do many of the things the child needs to be taught. It is to provide for the doing of these things that this little book is written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Rural School Agriculture

Download or read book Rural School Agriculture written by Charles Wesley Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural School Agriculture: Exercises for Use With Any d104-Book of Agriculture, or Without a d104-Book In the preparation of this little book two classes of students have been considered by the author. First, there are those who expect to become teachers in rural schools where agriculture is required, and who have had little training in agriculture, not only in the subject matter, but in methods of presenting the subject to students. This book then is designed in part for the training of teachers in normal and summer schools. The greatest barrier in the prog ress of agricultural education in rural schools is the lack of thoroughly trained teachers in agriculture. Secondly, there are those in rural districts, the ma jority of whom will continue to live upon the farm, and whose minds should be awakened to the fact that the problems of the farm are great enough to enlist all the brain power they can summon. Let us once establish in the mind of the farm boy an intel lectual insight into the problems of the farm, and the ever increasing exodus of the most enterprising young men of our rural districts to the city will be checked. Book Laboratory Exercises in Principles of Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Exercises in Principles of Agriculture Classic Reprint written by Erwin Hopt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Principles of Agriculture The work as presented in this manual had its beginning in at least two independent sources: (1) The method of preparing detailed exercises for teaching elementary general agriculture in secondary schools had its origin largely in the teaching and direction of H. B. Brownell, Professor of School Sciences, University of Nebraska. (2) The idea of prepar ing laboratory exercises in field crops and making available to schools the necessary supplies for teaching the same, Originated ten or twelve years ago with Professor's E. G. Mont'gomery and T. L. Lyon, both' formerly of Nebraska, but now at Cornell University. The manual of these two teachers, Examining and Grading Grains, has done much to encourage and syste matize laboratory study in field crops throughout the United States. It was largely the de mand for field crop material created by this manual which revived into life the abandonedidea of supplying field crop laboratory material which had formerly been carried on by the Department of Agronomy of the University of Nebraska. Without the use of ideas from these two sources, the work as presented in this manual could scarcely have been possible. Most of the laboratory exercises presented in this manual have passed through several mimeographed editions, and have been used in one or more of the following Nebraska schools: Teachers' College High School, Lincoln; School of Agriculture, Lincoln; School of Agriculture, Curtis. Laboratory instruction as here outlined is designed to accompany classroom instruction. A division of time that will probably fit most schools is as follows. Book Exercises in Elementary Agriculture

Download or read book Exercises in Elementary Agriculture written by Dick Jay Crosby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Elementary Agriculture: Plant Production Dairying is an industry of sufficient importance in most States to deserve special consideration in a course in elementary agriculture. The subject would naturally be introduced by making a somewhat more detailed study of the dairy type of cow than was given under animal production. This would be followed by a study of milk, its composition, how determined, and relation to price; handling, and the relation of cleanliness, straining, aerating, and cooling to quality; and uses for consumption as milk or cream, for condensing, for cheese making, and for butter making. In regions where dairying is not an important industry it may be desirable to take up the study Of some other phase of agrotechny, such as sugar making, canning, wine making, or olive-oil making. Rural engineering in most of its aspects is considered too technical for pupils in the common schools, but in every community there will be some Opportunity to examine the plans and structure of good types of buildings, fences, irrigation systems, etc., and to devote some time to drawing simple plans of farms, buildings, and other works. Ad vantage should also be taken of any Opportunity to visit implement warehouses and have the structure, Operation, and care of different types of farm machinery pointed out to pupils. The importance Of good roads, hygienic water supply, and sewage disposal should be emphasized. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Laboratory Exercises and Home Projects Adapted to Secondary Schools Use of exercises and projects. The number of exercises to be completed in a year will depend upon the needs of the local community and the time given to the course. The vocational school giving one half of each day to the course in agriculture should be able to complete all the laboratory exercises and in addition provide the required six months' supervised project work. In schools giving less time the teacher should select those exercises of greatest importance to the local community. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Agriculture With Experiments and Exercises a d104-Book for Rural and Graded Schools States, which is increasing so rapidly as to be out of proportion to the increase in farm products, must be supplied with food; consequently, more land must be cultivated, haphazard methods of farming must be abandoned, and better systems along all agricultural lines must prevail. The trend of agricultural develop ment is plainly visible. Soils once depleted by systems of farming which were the results of ignorance now respond to intelligent care by yielding bountiful crops; desert lands upon which grew scattering cacti and sage brush now produce under irrigation marvelous yields of fruit, vegetables, and other products; swamp lands, once thought worthless, are being drained and furnish homes for thousands of people; even soils that contained such large amounts of harmful salts as to make the growth of common plants impossible are being acted Upon by irrigation and drainage until the salts are reduced to such an extent that farming is practicable. Book Beginnings in Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Beginnings in Agriculture Classic Reprint written by Albert Russell Mann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings in Agriculture This book is designed for the purpose of introducing the study of \a.griculture into the seventh and eighth grades of our elementary schools. It may also meet a need in some of the smaller high schools and in ungraded Special and private schools. When the pupil comes to well-developed high-school work, he will need a more detailed and specific text. The book is founded on the suggestions in the Report of the Committee on Industrial Education in Schools for Rural Communi ties, Of the National Educational Association. That Committee recommended for the school years 6 to 8, four sets of subjects as follows: first half year, the affairs Of agriculture; second half year, the soil; second year, farming schemes and crops; third year, ani mals. A condensation Of this plan into a two-year scheme has been attempted in the present volume. It has been the aim Of the author to cover the work very largely in a nature-study Spirit, by which it is meant that the pupil Shall be brought into as close touch as possible with the actual farms, soils, crops, animals, and affairs. The problems are intended to set the pupils at work on their own account rather than to enable them to answer questions that may be suggested in the text. It is, of course, essential to practical school conditions that there shall be reading-matter and recitation-matter in the book. Perhaps Part I, dealing with the general agricultural situation, may be used as a series Of introductory reading and discussion exercises, the actual work with subject-matter to begin with Part II. The open book method of teaching, now used successfully in many schools for history and geography, might be employed advantageously with this text, especially in schools in which nature-study receives little attention. It is assumed that the teacher will see that the pupils work out the problems, Or as many of them as have useful application to the affairs of the particular community. It is to be hoped that there will be a school-garden on the premises, or that small areas may be set aside at the homes of the pupils, on which many of the sug gestions in the book may be worked out personally. It is specially to be desired that the parents be brought into the work, in order that the agricultural affairs of the community may be related to the school. Therefore, a large number of problems have been pre sented with this end in view, the expectation being that the pupil will ask the parents for the proper solution of the questions. Book Exercises in Elementary Quantitative Chemical Analysis

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Elementary Quantitative Chemical Analysis: For Students of Agriculture Owing to the growing demand for quantitative analytical chemistry by those engaged in the study of agriculture, it seemed to the authors that the presentation of the fundamental methods of agricultural analysis as carried out in the laboratories of the American Experiment Stations would be desirable. While this book is designed primarily as an elementary quantitative guide for the use of agricultural students, it may also be used for the work in general elementary quantitative analysis. This text-book is the outgrowth of several years' experience in teaching quantitative analysis to students specializing in Agriculture, Chemistry, Medicine, and Household Science. No attempt has been made to present a complete treatise on quantitative analysis; but a few typical exercises have been chosen to illustrate the fundamental principles and the most important methods of manipulation. To further the interest in this work, the student should be encouraged to do considerable outside reading, and there should be available for his use a number of the best books of reference. In the Appendix will be found a list of some of the most important works having a bearing on this subject, while throughout the text reference is made to the original literature. The gravimetric exercises and the work outlined under Acidimetry and Alkalimetry, together with the analysis of Milk or Feeding Material and Fertilizer, comprise the work usually accomplished by the agricultural students in one semester. Those students who desire more quantitative analysis complete the remainder of the exercises in another semester. Owing to the importance of the calculation of analytical data, this subject has been treated in considerable detail in Part V (Stoichiometry). The matter presented is arranged to be studied in conjunction with the regular laboratory exercises. In addition to the methods of solving problems, a large number of problems is given for practice. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simple Exercises Illustrating Some, Applications of Chemistry to Agriculture As has already been stated, there are three sources of plant food the soil, the air, and the water. From the air the plant takes m oxygen and carbonic-acid. Gas through the breathing pores of the leaves. The leaves do not use the nitrogen of the. Air. This essen tial and most expensive of plant foods is taken in by the roots of plants. Small quantities of nitrogen exist in soils in a form known as nitrates, which dissolve readily in water and enter the plant through its roots7 in company with the other plant foods. The roots of leguminous plants such as clovers, alfalfa, peas, and beans, are able also, with the aid of minute organisms known as bacteria, to use the uncombined nitrogen in the soil air. Book A Manual of Agriculture for the Eighth Grade Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Agriculture for the Eighth Grade Classic Reprint written by A. M. Richardson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Agriculture for the Eighth Grade No attempt has been made to make an exhau'stive list of exercises. It would be an easy matter to devote all the time allotted to the study of agriculture in the eighth grade to any phase of the subject. Exercises are included in practically every phase of this great subject. Teachers are urged to lay special emphasis upon that type of farming that is of most importance in their locality. All the exercises included are easy to work out and illustrate some principle necessary in the study of agriculture. No apparatus is called for that cannot be easily procured at little or no cost. In any good text book on agriculture the teacher will find ample material for additional exercises if they care for extra ones along any particular line. In the back of the book six blank pages have been left in which the teacher may insert additional exercises. In case the county superintendent or county agriculturist desires to add exercises so as to amplify the work for the agriculture of his county, they may be prepared on typewritten sheets about 517§x8$§ and the teachers in structed to paste them in the back of the Manual. The study of agriculture offers splendid opportunity for coopera tion between the home and the school and every opportunity should be taken advantage of. For example in the testing of seeds; have the pupils test seeds for any patron of the school who may care to have his seeds tested. In the spring, when you start the hotbed, have it understood that you are going to start different kinds of plants for transplanting, and that the parents are welcome to them. If the pupils have gardens at school, let them take their produce home. Have the pupils ask their parents practical questions that come up in their study. This will not only get the parents interested in what the children are doing, but it will give added interest to the children to know that they are studying things that they will be able to use and that older people are concerned about. Whenever possible to have school gardens, they will be found to be of great value, but they should be taken as a means to an end and not the end. Their value lies in the training and personal inspection that the teacher is able to give during the preparation of the ground; the sowing of the seed; and care up to the time school is out. After that they are seldom of any real value. They aid greatly in arousing interest. If every boy and girl could and would have a small garden at home, it would be better, because they could tend it during the summer, and have it where they could see it at all times. Most of these exercises have been tried out and used in the grade work of the Snohomish public schools. A few additional ones have been selected to make a more complete list, and to offer a somewhat larger field for selection by the teacher.
