Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises for Writing German: Adapted to the Rules of the German Grammar Tan essential parts of a sentence are called mly'eet and predicate. The salg'ert is that of which something is said (predicated), and the predicate is that which is said of the subject. The predicate must not be confounded with the object. A sentence may be formed without an object, but not without a predicate. That word which connects sub jcet and predicate is called copula. This copula is always an auxiliary verb of tense or mood. The following rules will clearly explain these terms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Writing and Speaking German

Download or read book Writing and Speaking German written by Paul R. Pope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Writing and Speaking German: Exercises in German Composition and Conversation; With Notes and Vocabularies The questions on the German text are, of course, intended to be suggestive rather than exhaustive. The foot-notes are very full in the first lessons; in later selections the student is expected to use correctly the material presented in the vocab ularies, which have been prepared with especial care and which aim to give the idiomatic renderings of all words and expressions found in the text. The Grammatical Notes cover only the chief points arising in connection with the material presented here. For more detailed grammatical work any of the standard reference grammars may be con suited. Teachers will observe that, while no special gram matical headings are given to the various lessons, the chief grammatical points are introduced in order of difficulty: for example, Normal and Inverted Order in Lesson I, Trans posed Order in Lesson II, The Subjunctive in Lesson III, etc, and that in general the material has been arranged in order of difficulty. Teachers will, of course, use their discretion in assigning lessons. It may sometimes be advisable to de vote two or more recitations to chapters given here as single lessons. The author desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to his wife, Elfrieda Hochbaum Pope, and his friends and colleagues, Professor A. W. Boesche and Professor H. C. Davidsen, for their many helpful suggestions given during the preparation of this book. Especial acknowledgment is due Professor Davidsen for his painstaking reading of manuscript and proof and for many suggestions which embody the results of years of successful language teaching in Germany as well as in America.
