The manner in which Mr. Jefferson has been alluded to in the preceding pages, may, perhaps, be deemed unjustifiable by those who, unacquainted with the details of the life and character of that celebrated person, have formed their opinions of him either from those who have eulogised him for the conspicuous part he took in encouraging his fellow-countrymen to throw off their allegiance to Great Britain, or from other writers, who, in their admiration of the talents for which he was distinguished, have ranked him amongst the most conspicuous benefactors of human liberty. But, if proofs can be adduced that no one, in or out of America, has gone further to poison the ears of men with principles utterly subversive of the well-being of society, the claims which have been set up for him to the gratitude of mankind will appear somewhat questionable. United as the world is in an unqualified admiration of the virtues of Washington, it is totally inconsistent with the respect due to the memory of that great man to attempt to place Jefferson, as has lately been done, * upon a parallel with him; espe Statesmen of the Time of George III. London, 1843. cially when evidences have been for some time before it, which sufficiently prove that the evils which have interrupted the prosperity of the United States are owing to a departure from the precepts and the moral examples of the former, and that the principles of Jefferson have been the direct cause of that fatal deviation. Injurious as these principles have been to America, the extent to which they have been enabled to disturb mankind can never be appreciated until they are stated in some detail; and as--perhaps hastily--a passage has been printed from...

Book A Documentary History of Slavery in North America

Download or read book A Documentary History of Slavery in North America written by Willie Lee Nichols Rose and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Documenting multiple aspects of slavery and its development in North America, this collection provides more than one hundred excerpts from personal accounts, songs, legal documents, diaries, letters, and other written sources. The book assembles a remarkable portrayal of the day-to-day connections between, and among, slaves and their owners across more than two centuries of subjugation and resistance, despair and hope. Beginning with a chronicle of the origins of slavery in the British colonies of North America, the collection traces the growth of the system to the antebellum period and includes accounts of slave revolts, auctions, slave travel and laws, and family life. Intimate as well as comprehensive, the documents reveal the individual views, goals, and lives of slaves and their masters, making this engaging work one of the most respected catalogs of firsthand information about slavery in North America.

Download or read book The Pearl written by Josephine F. Pacheco and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1848 seventy-six slaves from the nation's capital hid aboard a schooner called the Pearl in an attempt to sail down the Potomac River and up the Chesapeake Bay to freedom in Pennsylvania. When inclement weather forced them to anchor for the night, the fugitive slaves and the ship's crew were captured and returned to Washington. Many of the slaves were sold to the Lower South, and two men sailing the Pearl were tried and sentenced to prison. Recounting this harrowing tale from the preparations for escape through the participants' trial, Josephine Pacheco provides fresh insight into the lives of enslaved blacks in the District of Columbia, putting a human face on the victims of the interstate slave trade, whose lives have been overshadowed by larger historical events. Pacheco also details the Congressional debates about slavery that resulted from this large-scale escape attempt. She contends that although the incident itself and the trials and Congressional disputes that followed were not directly responsible for bringing an end to the slave trade in the nation's capital, they played a pivotal role in publicizing many of the issues surrounding slavery. Eventually, President Millard Fillmore pardoned the operators of the Pearl.

Book The Red River Valley in Arkansas Gateway to the Southwest

Download or read book The Red River Valley in Arkansas Gateway to the Southwest written by Robin Cole-Jett and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Red River's dramatic bend in southwestern Arkansas is the most distinctive characteristic along its 1,300 miles of eastern flow through plains, prairies and swamplands. This stretch of river valley has defined the culture, commerce and history of the region since the prehistoric days of the Caddo inhabitants. Centuries later, as the plantation South gave way to westward expansion, people found refuge and adventure along the area's trading paths, military roads, riverbanks, rail lines and highways. This rich heritage is why the Red River in Arkansas remains a true gateway to the Southwest. Author Robin Cole-Jett deftly navigates the history and legacy of one of the Natural State's most precious treasures.
