This book was released on 2008 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This white paper outlines proposals to improve the quality of alternative This white paper outlines proposals to improve the quality of alternative provision for young people who are permanently excluded from school or who are otherwise without a school place. Around 135,000 pupils a year, mostly of secondary age, spend some time in alternative provision. About one third are placed in pupil referral units, the rest in a range of places including in further education and the private and voluntary sectors. About half the children are excluded for bad or disruptive behaviour; the rest are in alternative provision for a variety of reasons. 75 per cent of pupils in pupil referral units have special educational needs, 91 per cent are aged 11-15, and 69 per cent are boys. Performance outcomes in GCSEs from alternative provision are very poor, though the data is limited. The strategy is based on core principles: starting with what works best for each person, taking account of needs and in consultation with parents and carers; securing a core educational entitlement for young people; better planning and commissioning of alternative provision; local authorities should be held accountable for outcomes; better professional support, accommodation and facilities; partnership working between alternative provision, other parts of the education sector and other agencies; learning from best practice and supporting innovation. A central aim is for schools to be able to get pupils back on track, and make more use of high quality alternative provisions as an early intervention for their pupils who are at risk of permanent exclusion. The term "Pupil Referral Unit" is considered outdated and unhelpful, and will be changed in the legislation.

Book Education Exclusion and Citizenship

Download or read book Education Exclusion and Citizenship written by Carl Parsons and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-03-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education, Exclusion and Citizenship provides a hard-hitting account of the realities of exclusion, examining the behaviour which typically results in exclusion, and asks questions about a society which communally neglects those most in need. Permanent exclusions from schools continue to rise. As schools compete with neighbouring schools for 'good' pupils, managers and heads are choosing to exclude disruptive pupils who might affect school image. The book looks at the experience of excluded children, the law regulating exclusion, the obligations of the LEAs, and focuses on prevention and early intervention strategies.

If you prefer a bound version then this book is for you. This document written by Department for Education provides a guide to the legislation that governs the exclusion of pupils from maintained schools, pupil referral units (PRUs), academy schools (including free schools, studio schools and university technology colleges) and alternative provision academies (including alternative provision free schools) in England. The 'guide to the law' sections in this guidance should not be used as a substitute for legislation and legal advice.*The document also provides statutory guidance to which head teachers, governing boards, local authorities, academy trusts, independent review panel members and special educational needs (SEN) experts must have regard when carrying out their functions in relation to exclusions. Clerks to independent review panels must also be trained to know and understand this guidance.*The phrase 'must have regard', when used in this context, does not mean that the sections of statutory guidance have to be followed in every detail, but that they should be followed unless there is a good reason not to in a particular case.*Where relevant, this document refers to other guidance in areas such as behaviour, SEN, and equality, but it is not intended to provide detailed guidance on these issues.

Book Exclusion From School

Download or read book Exclusion From School written by Eric Blyth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-05-03 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of pupils excluded from school has risen sharply over the past few years. To a great extent, this can be directly attributed to the increased competition between schools, following the introduction of the 1988 Education Reform Act. Many schools are concerned that children with behavioural problems will damage the image of the school and so can be reluctant to admit these pupils to the classroom. However, little has been done to follow up what happens to these pupils once they have been excluded from school, or to examine ways in which their exclusion might be prevented. This collection, written from a range of professional perspectives, examines current trends in exclusion, including the consequences of exclusion. It also gives practical guidance on preventative strategies, based on real life experiences and examines how professionals such as teachers, social workers and other support agencies can work together to help to avoid exclusion.

Book Tackling Exclusion

Download or read book Tackling Exclusion written by Priya Kanabar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are clear links between school exclusion, future unemployment and criminal behaviour (Social Exclusion Unit 2001, 2003). Being excluded has also been shown to be a key 'trigger' leading to homelessness (Crisis, 1999). By contrast, young people who are not excluded from school are more likely to leave with more and better qualifications, achieve their potential, find employment and, as a result, are less likely to take part in antisocial or criminal behaviour (Social Exclusion Unit, 2003). Tackling Exclusion is aimed at staff in mainstream schools, Learning Support Units and Pupil Referral Units. It provides a clear guide on how to identify the students at risk of exclusion from school and, once identified, provides individual and group support programmes for these students. The group work sessions and individual activities promote students' individual responsibility for behaviour, explore future aspirations, examine core beliefs and thought processes, and build 'school survival' skills through focusing on self-esteem, attitude towards school and teachers, social skills, and how to manage feelings and behaviour. Each session has an accompanying 'take home task' and optional individual follow-up work for the facilitator to carry out with the student.
