The book considers five domains of exclusion (services; economic; social relations; civic and socio-cultural; and community and spatial domains), with three chapters dedicated to analysing different dimensions of each exclusion domain. The book also examines the interrelationships between different forms of exclusion, and how outcomes and processes of different kinds of exclusion can be related to one another. In doing so, major cross-cutting themes, such as rights and identity, inclusive service infrastructures, and displacement of marginalised older adult groups, are considered. Finally, in a series of chapters written by international policy stakeholders and policy researchers, the book analyses key policies relevant to social exclusion and older people, including debates linked to sustainable development, EU policy and social rights, welfare and pensions systems, and planning and development. The book’s approach helps to illuminate the comprehensive multidimensionality of social exclusion, and provides insight into the relative nature of disadvantage in later life. Consequently, the book goes beyond structures or agency, and examines the question of a more dynamic approach to provide spaces for the ‘socially excluded’ to self-manage exclusion, thereby raising discussions around the contested positions that underlie development discourse on social inequality. While social exclusion linked to identities is studied, the book argues that hierarchies and inequalities based on social identities cut across and affect various groups of excluded. Consequently, these phenomena create or lead to various processes of exclusion. The book illustrates that social exclusion should not be limited to privileging the differences that characterize the exclusionary processes, but should also comprise underpinning strategies of ‘inclusion’, emphasizing the need to focus on imperatives ‘to include’. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: Mexican communities of African descent currently exist in a state of practical non-recognition on the part of both Mexican society and governmental intuitions. The causes of this lack of recognition are twofold. First there is a lack of sufficient academic research dealing with the current reality of afro Mexican communities, and second, Mexican Government intuitions have in no way formally or informally recognized the existence Afro-Mexican communities within Mexico. As a consequence of this cultural and official invisibility, Afro-Mexican communities are frequently denied access to healthcare, education work and larger integration within Mexican civil society. These communities are also losing their socio-cultural identity as lack of access to the above social services creates a process of out migration to both Mexican and international destinations, which disrupts both communal life and cultural cohesion among Afro-Mexicans. In the Costa Chica of Oaxaca, the largest area of Afro-Mexican inhabitation within Mexico, there is a particular high rate of ethnic exclusion and lack of cultural recognition existing despite attempts at both bettering the economic conditions of community members in the region and official recognition of Afro-Mexicans as a unique ethnic group. This exclusion has cut off Afro-Mexicans in the Costa Chica from benefiting from government programs recognizing specific cultural rights. In light of this reality, the work focuses on two key elements of Afro-Mexican issues: first, the need to research and better document the existence of Afro-Mexican communities in the Costa Chica region of Mexico, taking into account the traditional cultural elements, which characterize the socio-cultural identities of these communities. Second, the research focuses on the ways through which Afro Mexican identity and existence can be formally and informally recognized on a national level, highlighting the importance of the unique socio-cultural reality of Afro-Mexicans in the Costa Chica. The first line of inquiry works specifically on the internal Afro-Mexican community, focusing on the problem of understanding a cohesive identity based on values, traditions, symbols, beliefs and forms of behavior that function as cohesive elements within the Afro-Mexican community which can act as the base with which Afro-Mexicans build their feeling of membership (or cultural identity). The second, built on the first one, seeks to understand the relationship between Mexican civil society and Afro-Mexicans based on the principles of categorization, identification, comparison and distinction associated with normative rights, obligations and sanctions, which form roles (or social identities)

It excludes certain communities and groups from interaction and access to social resources through social arrangements, normative value systems and customs. Exclusion based on caste is one example and patriarchy is another, which is a form of systemic or constitutive exclusion. Having social, cultural, political and economic ramifications, it is also a complex and multi-dimensional concept. These dimensions are interwoven and are addressed in the different papers of the volume. This book revolves around the societal interventions and institutions that exclude, discriminate, isolate and deprive some groups on the basis of group identities such as caste or ethnicity. It covers a wide spectrum of societies and communities living in various cultural environments. Multinational corporations have violated human rights; private intermediaries in the internet have threatened freedom of opinion, and the global capital markets unleashed catastrophic risks. All of these phenomena call for a response from traditional constitutionalism. Yet it is outside the limits of the nation-state in transnational politics and outside institutionalized politics, in the 'private' sectors of global society that these constitutional problems arise. It is widely accepted that there is a crisis in traditional constitutionalism caused by transnationalization and privatization. How the crisis can be overcome is one of the major controversies of modern political and constitutional theory. This book sets out an answer to that problem. It argues that the obstinate state-and-politics-centricity of traditional constitutionalism needs to be counteracted by a sociological approach which, so far, has remained neglected in the constitutional debate. Constitutional sociology projects the questions of constitutionalism not only onto the relationship between public politics and law, but onto the whole society. It argues that constitutionalism has the potential to counteract the expansionist tendencies of social systems outside the state world, particularly of the globalized economy, science and technology, and the information media, when they endanger individual or institutional autonomy. In light of this, Christians must learn that salvation comes, not only as we are reconciled to God, and not only as we "learn to live with one another", but as we take the dangerous and costly step of opening ourselves to the other, of enfolding him or her in the same embrace with which we have been enfolded by God.
