Book excerpt: We briefly explore how large cross sections for excitation of both isoscalar and isovector giant multipole resonances which can be obtained using intermediate energy heavy-ion reactions can be utilized in photon-decay coincidence experiments to provide new information on subjects ranging from basic nuclear structure properties to resonance damping and pre-compound decay. We also discuss experiments in which photon-decay techniques are used as a tag to isolate and identify very weakly excited modes, enabling us to explore such diverse subjects as hadronic excitation of the giant dipole resonance, the distribution of isovector quadrupole strength in 2°8Pb, and the excitation of two-phonon giant resonance strength. 25 refs., 12 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giant resonances are collective excitations of the atomic nucleus, a typical quantum many-body system. The study of these fundamental modes has in many respects contributed to our understanding of the bulk behavior of the nucleus and of the dynamics of non-equilibrium excitations. Although the phenomenon of giant resonances has been known for more than 50 years, a large amount of information has been obtained in the last 10 years. This book gives an up-to-date, comprehensive account of our present knowledge of giant resonances. It presents the experimental facts and the techniques used to obtain that information, describes how these facts fit into theoretical concepts and how this allows to determine various nuclear properties which are otherwise difficult to obtain. Included as an introduction is an overview of the main facts, a short history of how the field has developed in the course of time, and a discussion of future perspectives.

Book Excitation and Photon Decay of Giant Resonances Excited by Intermediate Energy Heavy Ions

Download or read book Excitation and Photon Decay of Giant Resonances Excited by Intermediate Energy Heavy Ions written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inelastic scattering of medium energy heavy ions provides very large cross sections and peak-to-continuum ratios for excitation of giant resonances. For energies above about 50 MeV/nucleon, giant resonances are excited primarily through Coulomb excitation, which is indifferent to isospin, thus providing a good probe for the study of isovector giant resonances. The extremely large cross sections available from heavy ion excitation permit the study of rare decay modes of the giant resonances. In particular, recent measurements have been made of the photon decay of giant resonances following excitation by 22 and 84 MeV/nucleon 17O projectiles. The singles results at 84 MeV/nucleon yield peak cross sections for the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance and the isovector giant dipole resonance of approximately 0.8 and 3 barns/sr, respectively. Data on the ground state decay of the isoscalar giant quadrupole and isovector giant dipole resonances are presented and compared with calculations. Decays to low-lying excited states are also discussed. Preliminary results from an experiment to isolate the 2°8Pb isovector quadrupole resonance using its gamma decay are presented. 22 refs., 19 figs., 1 tab.

Also, the Coulomb excitation of multiphonon giant resonances by intermediate-energy heavy ions will be examined.

Book Excitation of Giant Resonances Via Direct Reactions

Download or read book Excitation of Giant Resonances Via Direct Reactions written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental measurements of electric giant multipole resonances are discussed. The parameters of the giant quadrupole resonance are now firmly established by an extensive set of measurements. The GQR is providing a significant influence in other areas of nuclear physics. The monopole resonance has now been established and its observation has provided the first direct measure of the nuclear compressibility. A strong case for the existence of a giant octupole resonance is now being made through a variety of hadron reactions. However, the supply of giant multipole resonances has not been exhausted. The newer techniques such as higher energy proton scattering, charge exchange reactions, heavy-ion scattering and pion reactions offer considerable hope for identifying new resonances during the next few years.

Book Heavy Ion Excitation of Giant Resonances

Download or read book Heavy Ion Excitation of Giant Resonances written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prospects for high energy heavy ion excitation of giant resonances are discussed. A brief review is provided of the results obtained to date using low/medium energy heavy ions and it is suggested that those results show no substantial advantage of heavy ions for giant resonance excitation. Calculations are presented that show that Coulomb excitation becomes the dominant excitation mechanism of the giant resonances for heavy ions above about 100 MeV/nucleon. The Coulomb excitation provides extremely large differential cross sections for excitation of both isovector and isoscalar resonances. Recent data are presented for inelastic scattering of 84 MeV/nucleon 17O ions on 2°8Pb that demonstrate the effectiveness of Coulomb excitation in providing extremely large cross sections and peak-to-continuum ratios for the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance and the isovector giant dipole resonance. 19 refs., 17 figs.

Book excerpt: Decay studies of giant multipole resonances are discussed, emphasizing the role of Coulomb excitation with intermediate energy heavy ions, which can provide very large cross sections for both isoscalar and isovector resonances. We discuss measurement of the photon decay of one and two phonon giant resonances, reporting results where available. It is pointed out throughout the presentation that the use of E1 photons as a tag'' provides a means to observe weakly excited resonances that cannot be observed in the singles spectra. 30 refs., 16 figs., 1 tab.

Book Giant Resonances in Single and Double Charge Exchange

Download or read book Giant Resonances in Single and Double Charge Exchange written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long-standing issue in nuclear physics is whether or not multiple excitations of the giant-dipole resonance do exist. Recent studies at LAMPF using pion-induced double-charge exchange reactions show the existence of previously unobserved giant resonances in the continuum at high-excitation energies. Based on their energies, characteristic angular distributions, and the cross sections at which the resonances are observed, they have been identified as two different types of double-collective-excitation modes of the nucleus: (1) The isovector giant-dipole resonance built on the isobaric analog state and (2) the isovector giant-dipole resonance built on the giant dipole. In this report we will discuss the general features of the new resonances as they have emerged from DCX experiments performed recently at LAMPF. 12 refs., 7 figs.
