Book excerpt: Susy Smith, internationally known author of twenty-one books on parapsychology and the occult, traces the fascinting, many-faceted history of hypnosis—from its shady origins to its present status of quasi-respectability and its promising future as a tool for producing Extrasensory Perception. In this book you will read about astonishing cases of hypnosis and the people who practice it. The report of the California doctor who used hypnosis as the sole anesthetic in heart surgery on two teenagers . . . The frightening story of a group of amateur hypnotists who placed a young girl in a trance so deep that she lost the use of English and began to speak in a strange, unknown language. The resulting loss of communication made it impossible for the hypnotists to bring the subject out of her trance . . . The staggering implications of statistics—which show that many hypnotic trances lead to communication with the dead . . . The Soviet professor who conducted long-distance telepathic hypnosis tests designed to make telepathy useful for the Russian cosmonauts . . . Book The Reach of the Mind

Download or read book The Reach of the Mind written by Joseph Banks Rhine and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. J.B. Rhine, psychologist at Duke University, was the world's outstanding authority and scientific pioneer in the fields of ESP and psychokinesis. "The Reach of The Mind" is Dr. Rhine's story of his findings, and the techniques he has developed, over many years, to scientifically measure non-physical factors of man's mind: telepathy, clairvoyance, and the force which the mind can physically produce upon inanimate objects. When the "The Reach of the Mind" was first released, it greatly impressed Carl Jung, who used it as a basis for his theories on synchronicity. In this special edition, Dr. Rhine included a new preface surveying even more progress in his field.

Book excerpt: Russell Targ, laser physicist and well-known author, cofounded Stanford Research Institute to explore psychic abilities in the 1970s and 1980s, is now teaching remote-viewing workshops worldwide. For decades Targ has produced some of the most significant scientific research ever conducted on the nature of consciousness. He has demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt that the mind can function without limitation in space and time and that this ability is teachable and practical. Here is the inside story of research that is shaking the foundations of Western thought about the human mind and its relationship to the physical world.

Download or read book First Sight written by James C. Carpenter and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often seen as supernatural, unpredictable, illusory and possibly dangerous, ESP, telepathy, clairvoyance and other parapsychological activities are actually happening all the time and help us make sense of everyday experiences. First Sight provides a new way of understanding such experiences and describes a way of thinking about the unconscious mind that makes it clear that these abilities are not rare and anomalous, but instead are used by all of us all the time, unconsciously and efficiently. Drawing upon a broad array of studies in contemporary psychology, the author integrates a new model for understanding these unusual abilities with the best research in psychology on problems as diverse as memory, perception, personality, creativity and fear. In doing so, he illustrates how the field of parapsychology, which, historically, has been riddled with confusion, skepticism and false claims, can move from the edges of science to its center, where it will offer fascinating new knowledge about unmapped aspects of our nature. The author demonstrates that the new model accounts for accumulated findings very well, and explains previous mysteries, resolves apparent contradictions, and offers clear directions for further study. First Sight also ventures beyond the laboratory to explain such things as why apparent paranormal experiences are so rare, why they need not be feared, and how they can be more intentionally accessed. Further study of this theory is likely to lead to a "technology" of parapsychological processes while drastically revising our conception of the science of the mind toward a new science more humane and more replete with possibility than we have imagined in the past.

Download or read book Homo Sovieticus written by Wladimir Velminski and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Soviet scientists and pseudoscientists pursued telepathic research, cybernetic simulations, and mass hyptonism over television to control the minds of citizens. In October 1989, as the Cold War was ending and the Berlin Wall about to crumble, television viewers in the Soviet Union tuned in to the first of a series of unusual broadcasts. “Relax, let your thoughts wander free...” intoned the host, the physician and clinical psychotherapist Anatoly Mikhailovich Kashpirovsky. Moscow's Channel One was attempting mass hypnosis over television, a therapeutic session aimed at reassuring citizens panicked over the ongoing political upheaval—and aimed at taking control of their responses to it. Incredibly enough, this last-ditch effort to rally the citizenry was the culmination of decades of official telepathic research, cybernetic simulations, and coded messages undertaken to reinforce ideological conformity. In Homo Sovieticus, the art and media scholar Wladimir Velminski explores these scientific and pseudoscientific efforts at mind control. In a fascinating series of anecdotes, Velminski describes such phenomena as the conflation of mental energy and electromagnetism; the investigation of aura fields through the “Aurathron”; a laboratory that practiced mind control methods on dogs; and attempts to calibrate the thought processes of laborers. “Scientific” diagrams from the period accompany the text. In all of the experimental methods for implanting thoughts into a brain, Velminski finds political and metaphorical contaminations. These apparently technological experiments in telepathy and telekinesis were deployed for purely political purposes.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "men who stared at goats" in the U.S. Army in the 1970s were trying to pull ahead of Soviet psychic research initiatives, many of which are described in this unique volume. They involve telepathy, psychotronics, psychokinesis, and out-of-body experiences such as remote viewing. This is the widely cited and quoted report prepared by U.S. Army Medical Intelligence and Information Agency for the Defense Intelligence Agency in 1975. Recently released through the FOIA, it has only been available in nearly illegible PDF editions. This transcription presents the full report with four major new addenda: biographical trace data on the researchers and subjects named; relevant imagery; a complete study done by members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on the Pavlita (psychotronic) generator, with Pavlita's participation (in 1987); and a recent Pravda news article on weaponizing psychotronic research. An excellent set of bibliographic endnotes is provided for those interested in further information.

Book Why People Believe Weird Things

Download or read book Why People Believe Weird Things written by Michael Shermer and published by Holt Paperbacks. This book was released on 2002-09-01 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This sparkling book romps over the range of science and anti-science." --Jared Diamond, author of Guns, Germs, and Steel Revised and Expanded Edition. In this age of supposed scientific enlightenment, many people still believe in mind reading, past-life regression theory, New Age hokum, and alien abduction. A no-holds-barred assault on popular superstitions and prejudices, with more than 80,000 copies in print, Why People Believe Weird Things debunks these nonsensical claims and explores the very human reasons people find otherworldly phenomena, conspiracy theories, and cults so appealing. In an entirely new chapter, "Why Smart People Believe in Weird Things," Michael Shermer takes on science luminaries like physicist Frank Tippler and others, who hide their spiritual beliefs behind the trappings of science. Shermer, science historian and true crusader, also reveals the more dangerous side of such illogical thinking, including Holocaust denial, the recovered-memory movement, the satanic ritual abuse scare, and other modern crazes. Why People Believe Strange Things is an eye-opening resource for the most gullible among us and those who want to protect them.
