Book Child Welfare League of America Standards of Excellence for Residential Group Care Services

Download or read book Child Welfare League of America Standards of Excellence for Residential Group Care Services written by Child Welfare League of America and published by CWLA Press (Child Welfare League of America). This book was released on 1991 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the inception of its program of Standards development, CWLA has formulated a series of Standards based on current knowledge, the developmental needs of children, and tested ways of meeting these needs effectively. The preparation of Standards involves an examination of current practices and the assumptions on which they are based; a survey of professional literature and standards developed by other groups; and a study of the most recent scientific findings of social work and related fields, such as child development, education, mental health, psychology, medicine, psychiatry, and sociology, as they bear on child welfare practice. The final formulation of each Standards volume follows extended discussion of principles and issues by committees of experts in each service, the drafting of a preliminary statement, and a critical review by CWLA member agencies and representatives of related professions and other national organizations. The format of each volume is similar: each Standard is numbered, with subsumed elaboration, and is also cross-referenced and indexed. Standards volumes are three-hole punched, with their own cover/divider and identifying tab, and are packaged individually. Binders are available for purchase separately.

Book Therapeutic Residential Care for Children and Youth

Download or read book Therapeutic Residential Care for Children and Youth written by James K Whittaker and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2014-09-21 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Therapeutic Residential Care For Children and Youth takes a fresh look at therapeutic residential care as a powerful intervention in working with the most troubled children who need intensive support. Featuring contributions from distinguished international contributors, it critically examines current research and innovative practice and addresses the key questions: how does it work, what are its critical “active ingredients” and does it represent value for money? The book covers a broad spectrum of established and emerging approaches pioneered around with world, with contributors from the USA, Canada, Scandinavia, Spain, Australia, Israel and the UK offering a mix of practice and research exemplars. The book also looks at the research relating to critical issues for child welfare service providers: the best time to refer children to residential care, how children can be helped to make the transition into care, the characteristics of children entering and exiting care, strategies for engaging families as partners, how the substantial cost of providing intensive is best measured against outcomes, and what research and development challenges will allow therapeutic residential care to be rigorously compared with its evidence-based community-centered alternatives. Importantly, the volume also outlines how to set up and implement intensive child welfare services, considering how transferable they are, how to measure success and value for money, and the training protocols and staffing needed to ensure that a programme is effective. This comprehensive volume will enable child welfare professionals, researchers and policymakers to develop a refined understanding of the potential of therapeutic residential care, and to identify the highest and best uses of this intensive and specialized intervention.

Book Residential Care of Children

Download or read book Residential Care of Children written by Mark E. Courtney and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-25 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, societies have relied upon residential care settings to provide homes for children, and for much of that period a debate has raged over whether such settings are appropriate places for children to be raised. In recent years this debate has taken on an international dimension as human rights policies have called into question the legitimacy of residential care of children. Unfortunately, the ideological fervor that usually accompanies such discussions prevents a more nuanced understanding of the reasons that countries continue to make use of residential care. Residential Care of Children: Comparative Perspectives fills major gaps in knowledge about residential care and is intended to inform debates within and between nations about the appropriate use of such institutions. Eleven country-specific chapters, written by child welfare experts from around the world, provide an in-depth understanding of the historical development of residential care, the current state of affairs, and predictions for the future. Chapters describe how residential care is defined in each country, how it has evolved over time, factors that have contributed to the observed pattern of development of residential care, and potential concerns for the future. An integrative chapter presents a critical cross-national perspective, identifying common themes and analyzing underlying factors. Seeking to explain rather than cast judgment, Residential Care of Children: Comparative Perspectives will be fruitful reading for policymakers, program administrators, advocates, practitioners, and scholars interested in creating better services for vulnerable children and youth.

Book Exemplars of Quality

Download or read book Exemplars of Quality written by Vivian Tellis-Nayak and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exemplars of Quality: The Paths to Excellence in Quality Nursing Homes These castigations may have served well in prodding the nation's conscience. Yet, at the same time, they may also have unnecessarily tarred the extraordinary record of many nursing homes that continue to care for our elderly with love, dignity and professionalism. There indeed exist such exemplars of excellence, and you don't look for them only on the gold coasts of America. Excellence in nursing home care transcends all lines: you find excellence in nursing homes which predominantly serve the indigent elderly; you find it in those with different religious persuasions and varied profit motives. These unsung models of exemplary care to our elderly deserve to be recognized and applauded. Theirs is a success story little known and barely appreciated. Heroes and saints may be hard to come by, but their achievements uplift and inspire the mediocre. They can also teach and persuade, for they have successfully broken out of the beaten path; they have pursued the highroad; they have achieved excellence. The purpose of this study was not so much to applaud their success, but to understand how the best nursing homes achieve a high quality of care. In an otherwise besmirched story of the nursing home industry, the superior homes bear inspiring witness that quality is not beyond reach. The paths to it may be different, but they are by no means hidden or mysterious. This study wasdesigned with the assumption that it would benefit the public and the provider community if we can chart the course the best nursing homes follow, if we can understand the strategies they pursue and if we can explain how judiciously they invest their resources in order to achieve the goal. Download or read book Improving the Quality of Care in Nursing Homes written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1986-02-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As more people live longer, the need for quality long-term care for the elderly will increase dramatically. This volume examines the current system of nursing home regulations, and proposes an overhaul to better provide for those confined to such facilities.
