Book Excavations At Star Carr

Download or read book Excavations At Star Carr written by Grahame Clark and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1954 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was originally published in 1954. Grahame Clark's excavations at Star Carr from 1949 to 1951 have long been regarded as a model of how archaeological investigation should be conducted. In addition to this, the importance of the site itself, the first early mesolithic site in Europe from which a full complement of bone, antler, wood and other organic material was recovered alongside the flint industry, has established for this report on the excavations a permanent place in all archaeological libraries. The book is now reissued.

Book Star Carr

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nicky Milner
  • Publisher : Council for British Archaeology
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book Star Carr written by Nicky Milner and published by Council for British Archaeology. This book was released on 2013 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Star Carr is one of the most famous and important prehistoric sites in Europe. Dating from the early Mesolithic period, over 10,000 years ago, the site has produced a unique range of artefacts and settlement evidence. First excavated in 1949-51 by Professor Grahame Clark of Cambridge University, the site was buried in a deep layer of peat on the edge of prehistoric Lake Flixton. The peat has preserved an incredible collection of organic artefacts, including bone, wood and antler, as well as thousands of flint tools. This has allowed archaeologists to build up a detailed picture of life on the edge of the lake around 9000 BC. New excavations have now revealed the remains of what may be the earliest house ever found in Britain, and have shown that the settlement stretched for several hundred metres along the lake shore. This book tells the story of the discovery of Star Carr, and brings it up-to-date with details of the current excavations. It also discusses other important Mesolithic sites in Britain and Europe and how these are transforming our view of life after the Ice Age.

Book excerpt: A summary of findings from the most recent archaeological and palaeoecological investigations at the Early Mesolithic occupation site. Holmes, Jennifer Jones, Paul Lane, Carol Law, Richard Preece, Peter Rowley-Conwy, Tim Schadla-Hall, and Maisie Taylor.

Book The Earlier Stone Age Settlement of Scandinavia

Download or read book The Earlier Stone Age Settlement of Scandinavia written by Grahame Clark and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1975-01-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Ice Age Scandinavia was submerged under thick ice sheets, and it was only in the subsequent warmer conditions, as the ice receded, that colonisation by plants, animals and men became possible. In this book Grahame Clark examines the expansion of human settlement into this area, with particular emphasis on the economic aspects of the societies under discussion. The account is carried down to the time (3500-3000 BC) when mixed farming, including cereal agriculture, was being introduced into the area. The book is fully illustrated and documented by many maps and tables. It provides a rounded picture of the economy of the first settlers and their descendants in an area whose archaeological past has been exceptionally fully investigated and documented. The colonisation of Scandinavia is considered in its European context, but the main emphasis lies on the process of change and the continuity of settlement in the territory itself.

Covering aspects of both Palaeolithic and Mesolithic research in order to encourage dialogue between practitioners of archaeology of both periods, contributions are also geographically diverse, touching on British, European, North American, and Asian archaeology. Topics covered include transitional periods, deer and people, stone tool technologies, pottery, land-use, antler frontlets, and the development of prehistoric archaeology an 'age of wonder'.

Book Cattle in Ancient and Modern Ireland

Download or read book Cattle in Ancient and Modern Ireland written by Fergus Kelly and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cattle have been the mainstay of Irish farming since the Neolithic began in Ireland almost 6000 years ago. Cattle, and especially cows, have been important in the life experiences of most Irish people, directly and/or through legends such as the Táin Bó Cuailnge (The Cattle-raid of Cooley). In this book, diverse aspects of cattle in Ireland, from the circumstances of their first introduction to recent and ongoing developments in the management of grasslands – still the main food-source for cattle in Ireland – are explored in thirteen essays written by experts. New information is presented, and several aspects relating to cattle husbandry and the interactions of cattle and people that have hitherto received little or no attention are discussed.
