Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection, addressing a topic of ongoing interest and debate in American archaeology, examines the evolution of ranked chiefdoms in the Midwestern and Southeastern United States during the period A.D. 700–1200. The volume brings together a broad range of professionals engaged in the fieldwork that has vitalized the theoretical debates on the development of Mississippi Valley cultures. The initial chapter provides a general discussion of various explanations for the rise of these distinctive ranked societies in the eastern United States (A.D. 750-1050) and sets the stage for the interdisciplinary analysis from multiple viewpoints that follows. The first section discusses a cluster of individual sites in the Midwest and Southeast and reveals the parallel—and occasionally divergent—paths followed by the inhabitants as they transitioned from Late Woodland into Mississippian lifeways. The chapters in the second half discuss by region the emergence of ranked agricultural societies and examine how these networks played a role in the large-scale and roughly contemporaneous socio-political development. Although written expressly for the layreader, it has continued for more than eighty years to appeal to a wide audience that ranges from professional archeologists and scholars to weekend artifact collectors.Published originally in 1926, Archeology of Mississippi details Brown's records collected during more than a decade of research. Anyone wishing to investigate archeology in Mississippi must start with this book. As early as 1912 Brown, a professor of romance languages at the University of Mississippi, began taking photographs of Mississippi Indian mounds. His are the only photographic records of certain cultural sites that have since then been drastically altered.

Book Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley

Download or read book Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley written by Ephraim George Squier and published by Smithsonian Books (DC). This book was released on 1998 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Originally published in 1848 as the first major work in the nascent discipline as well as the first publication of the newly established Smithsonian Institution, Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley remains today not only a key document in the history of American archaeology but also the primary source of information on hundreds of mounds and earthworks in the eastern United States, most of which have now vanished. Despite adhering to the popular assumption that the moundbuilders could not have been the ancestors of the supposedly savage Native American groups still living in the region, the authors set high standards for their time. Their work provides insight into some of the conceptual, methodological, and substantive issues that archaeologists still confront. Long out of print, this 150th anniversary edition includes David J. Meltzer's lively introduction, which describes the controversies surrounding the book's original publication, from a bitter, decades-long feud between Squier and Davis to widespread debates about the links between race, religion, and human origins. Complete with a new index and bibliography, and illustrated with the original maps, plates, and engravings, Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley provides a new generation with a first-hand view of this pioneer era in American archaeology." -- Penguin Random House's website (distributor).

Book The F L Brinkley Midden 22Ts729 Archaeological Investigations in the Yellow Creek Watershed Tishomingo County Mississippi

Download or read book The F L Brinkley Midden 22Ts729 Archaeological Investigations in the Yellow Creek Watershed Tishomingo County Mississippi written by Jeffrey L. Otinger and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excavations at the F.L. Brinkley Midden (22Ts729), in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, were conducted by the Office of Archaeological Research, University of Alabama. Excavations were carried out to mitigate the destruction of the site by the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway project. The F.L. Brinkley Midden is a stratified accretional midden dating from the Early Archaic through the Middle Woodland period. At the beginning of investigations, the site had seen extensive damage. Nevertheless much of the site, especially the lower levels, remained undisturbed, and an excavated sample of the site was obtained by hand excavation, gradder transects, and backhoe trenches. Artifactual analysis indicates a close correspondence between physical stratigraphy and cultural stratigraphy. A large number of pit features were recorded from all levels of the site, including ten problematical large basin shaped features. These large basin shaped features, which date to the Late Archaic period, are interpreted as the remains of earth covered semisubterranean structures.

Book Archaeological Salvage Excavations at the L A Strickland I Site 22Ts765 Tishomingo County Mississippi

Download or read book Archaeological Salvage Excavations at the L A Strickland I Site 22Ts765 Tishomingo County Mississippi written by John W. O'Hear and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaelogical salvage excavations at the L.A. Strickland I (22Ts765) revealed the presence of two major occupations of the site, located in the upper headwaters of Mackeys Creek in central Tishomingo County, Mississippi, defined as the Tennessee Tombigbee Divide Hills ecozone. The first of these sites, a prehistoric Indian settlement of the Middle Woodland period, dates to approximately A.D. 650. The second use of the site was for a turn of the century railroad building camp. Materials from the Middle Woodland component include a sample of artifacts from the surface and disturbed plowzone, information on the form and content of a tightly clustered group of three cooking pits, and a series of radiocarbon dates from these pits which showed an average data of A.D. 644 + or - 62 years. The Middle Woodland ceramic assemblage includes sand tempered, limestone tempered, and crushed-sandstone tempered pottery. The lithic assemblage includes Flint Creek type projectile points, a variety of biface tools, tool fragments, and chipping debris. Analysis of the artifiacts and ethnobotanical materials from the site indicates that the site was occupied for a short period of time during the fall of the year by a small group of people practicing bread spectrum hunting and gathering.
