Book excerpt: Excavations in 1979 on the fringes of Saxon Warminster produced the only substantial archaeological and palaeoenvironmental sequences so far recovered from the town. Book Landscape of the Megaliths

Download or read book Landscape of the Megaliths written by Mark Gillings and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes the results of the Longstones Project , a joint-universities programme of excavation and survey designed to develop a fuller understanding of the context and dynamics of monument construction in the later Neolithic (3rd millennium BC) of the Avebury region, Wiltshire. Several elements of this internationally important prehistoric monument complex were investigated: an early-mid 3rd millennium BC enclosure at Beckhampton; the recently re-discovered Beckhampton Avenue and Longstones Cove; a section of the West Kennet Avenue; the Falkner's stone circle; and the Cove within Avebury's Northern Inner Circle. The research sheds new light on the complexities and development of this monument rich area and consideration is given to the questions of how and why ceremonial centres such as that at Avebury came into being in the 3rd millennium BC. The importance of understanding the agency - the affective and perceived inherent qualities - of materials and landscapes is stressed; and the unusual character of the Wessex monument complexes is highlighted by comparison with the format and sequences of other ceremonial centres in southern Britain. The second part of the monograph tracks the later, post-prehistoric, lives of Avebury's megalithic monuments including a detailed account of the early 18th-century records of the Beckhampton Avenue made by the antiquary William Stukeley.

Book An Iron Age Settlement Outside Battlesbury Hillfort Warminster and Sites Along the Southern Range Road

Download or read book An Iron Age Settlement Outside Battlesbury Hillfort Warminster and Sites Along the Southern Range Road written by Chris Ellis and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction of a tank road through part of Salisbury Plain, from Warminster to Tilshead, has revealed archaeological remains dating from the Neolithic up to the modern use of the Plain for military training. Excavation adjacent to Battlesbury Camp hillfort has uncovered Late Bronze Age to Middle Iron Age settlement activity including ditches, roundhouses, four-post structures and numerous pits. Some of the pits contained human burials, and other deposits of artefacts and animal bones appear to have been formally placed. Detailed environmental investigation has provided information about both the nature of the on-site activities and the character of the surrounding landscape. Other sites investigated along the tank road included a round barrow and a multiple inhumation and cremation burial of Early Bronze Age date, a Middle Bronze Age enclosure, Late Bronze Age settlement sites, the 'Old Ditch' Wessex Linear earthwork and evidence for Romano-British settlement and landuse.

Book Archaeological Research Agenda for the Avebury World Heritage Site

Download or read book Archaeological Research Agenda for the Avebury World Heritage Site written by and published by Wessex Archaeology. This book was released on 2001 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avebury is one of the few places in southern Britain to have acted as a focus for ceremonial and ritual activity during the Neolithic and early Bronze Age. The rich collection of archaeological sites, some visible and some buried, exerted physical and cultural influence on the landscape and environment for millennia. This volume forms the first formal research agenda for a World Heritage Site and is the result of several years' work by leading specialists. An introductory discussion of the specific research requirements of such an extraordinary site is followed by a Resource Assessment, a Research Agenda and a study of Research Strategies. These sections are arranged chronologically and cover the Palaeolithic through to the Saxon and medieval periods. The final section examines the methods and techniques used to gather data. These include geophysical survey, fieldwalking, aerial survey, evaluation and excavation, GIS survey and metal detecting. Contributors include Andrew J Lawson, Rosemary M J Cleal, Bryn Walters, Andrew Reynolds, Chris Gingell, Mark Corney, Gill Swanton, Peter Fowler, Michael J Allen, Mark Bowden and Nick Burton.

Book Animals in Saxon Scandinavian England

Download or read book Animals in Saxon Scandinavian England written by Matilda Holmes and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book an analysis of over 300 animal bone assemblages from English Saxon and Scandinavian sites is presented. The data set is summarised in extensive tables for use as comparanda for future archaeozoological studies. Animals in Saxon and Scandinavian England takes as its core four broad areas of analysis. The first is an investigation of the diet of the population, and how food was used to establish social boundaries. Increasingly diverse diets are recognised, with high-status populations distinguishing themselves from other social sectors through the way food was redistributed and the diversity of taxa consumed. Secondly, the role of animals in the economy is considered, looking at how animal husbandry feeds into underlying modes of production throughout the Saxon period. From the largely self-sufficient early Saxon phase animal husbandry becomes more specialised to supply increasingly urban settlements. The ensuing third deliberation takes into account the foodways and interactions between producer and consumer sites, considering the distribution of food and raw materials between farm, table and craft worker. Fundamental changes in the nature of the Saxon economy distinguish a move away from food renders in the middle Saxon phase to market-based provisioning; opening the way for greater autonomy of supply and demand. Finally, the role of wics and burhs as centres of production is investigated, particularly the organisation of manufacture and provisioning with raw materials.

Book Investigating Animal Burials

Download or read book Investigating Animal Burials written by Dr. James Morris and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2011 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years zooarchaeology has started to move beyond the purely economic towards social interpretations. In particular, these 'social' interpretations have often concentrated upon complete or partial animal burials rather than upon the disarticulated and fragmented faunal remains more commonly recovered from archaeological sites. This book presents a study of these associated bone groups from the Neolithic to late Medieval periods of southern England and Yorkshire. Not only does it present data on over 2000 deposits, it also discusses their interpretation, arguing that most are based on generalised period-based assumptions. It is proposed that a biographical approach to these types of deposit, allows the investigation of the specific above ground actions behind their creation, moving away from generalisations towards individual interpretations. The study shows the value of not only utilising specialist data, but integrating such knowledge with other archaeological evidence and theoretical approaches. The book is divided into three main sections. The first two chapters discuss the history of associated bone groups in the archaeological record and how they are created by human and natural actions. The second section consists of detailed chapters (three to nine) discussing the evidence from each region and period. The third section discusses trends in the data and the problems with how they are interpreted. It outlines and tests the use of a biographical approach and discusses the implications of these findings for wider research.
