Book excerpt: Relatively few reading intervention studies have investigated treatment fidelity data and the extent to which fidelity is associated with student outcomes. This study extends the extant research by examining treatment adherence and quality and the extent to which these components of treatment fidelity relate to posttest performance for eighth grade students who received a content-area reading treatment targeting improved content knowledge and reading comprehension. Data were analyzed to address the following questions: (1) Do treatment adherence and quality indicate a general factor of fidelity? (2) Do treatment adherence and quality predict greater performance in content acquisition and reading comprehension? (3) To what extent are the effects of treatment adherence and quality on student outcomes moderated by teacher's classroom management performance and student characteristics (pretest reading performance level, limited English proficiency status, special education status, and gender)? Situated within a larger randomized controlled trial examining the effects of a content-area instructional program, this study used data from the subsample of students (n = 790) in classes randomly assigned to treatment. Results showed a general factor of fidelity did not sufficiently predict treatment adherence and quality. Treatment adherence and quality were significant, positive predictors of content knowledge performance, which indicates that increases in both dimensions of treatment fidelity were associated with improvements in content knowledge posttest performance. However, a significant interaction between treatment adherence and quality was present. Interaction plots revealed instructional quality led to greater levels of posttest performance for students in classrooms with high levels of instructional adherence; however, instructional quality was not strongly associated with posttest performance when instruction was implemented with low adherence. Results also showed instructional quality was a significant, positive predictor of performance on the ASK Reading Comprehension subtest. Moderator analyses revealed teachers' classroom management and students' pretest performance influenced the effects of treatment adherence and quality on student outcomes. These findings help to elucidate the conditions under which the PACT instructional treatment leads to improved outcomes and, more broadly, underscores the importance of examining dimensions of treatment fidelity and the interplay between treatment fidelity dimensions and other teacher- and student-level characteristics when interpreting treatment effects.

Book excerpt: Recent data indicate that only 34% of American eighth grade students are able to demonstrate grade-level proficiency with academic reading tasks (NCES, 2011). The staggering nature of statistics such as this is even more profound when considering that high level literacy skills combined with mastery of digital texts have become practical requirements for success in secondary education, post-secondary education, and virtually all vocational contexts. Despite this incongruent scenario, little research has been conducted to evaluate instructional methods and reading comprehension strategies with digital texts. To address this critical issue, the present study examined the effects of a metacognitive reading comprehension instructional protocol (STRUCTURE Your Reading (SYR); Ehren, 2008) with eighth grade students using digital texts in a standard social studies classroom in an urban American school setting. The focus of the protocol was on teaching strategies and self-questioning prompts before, during, and after reading. The study employed a randomized controlled design and consisted of three conditions with a total of 4 participating teachers and 124 participating students. The study was conducted over 25 instructional days and two instructional units with 13.83 treatment hours within the standard, social studies classes. Hierarchical ANCOVA analyses revealed that when controlling for pre-test measurements, the comparison and experimental groups performed significantly better than the control group with instructional unit test scores (Unit 2), reading strategy use in all stages of reading (before, during, and after), and self-questioning prompts during reading. Comparison and experimental groups did not significantly differ in these gains, indicating that this instructional protocol is effective with both paper and digital text. These findings suggest that the SYR instructional protocol is effective with secondary students in content area classrooms when using digital text. Furthermore, they suggest that metacognition and reading comprehension strategy instruction are able to be successfully embedded within a content area class and result in academic and metacognitive gains. Clinical implications and future research directions and are discussed.

Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Book excerpt: Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is a set of research-based strategies designed to improve reading comprehension, enhance students' content area learning, facilitate access to higher-level texts, and to promote student engagement. The present study examines how fidelity of implementation of CSR is associated with reading outcomes for students with mild to moderate disabilities using data from two nonoverlapping studies conducted in middle school language arts and reading classrooms (study 1) and social studies and science classrooms (study 2). Researchers use a definition of fidelity that includes both the amount of CSR instruction delivered by teachers and the quality of implementation. The following questions guided this research: (1) Is higher CSR instructional quality associated with increased student outcomes for adolescents in treatment classrooms, and for a subgroup of students with disabilities?; and (2) Is the amount of CSR instruction related to student outcomes for adolescents in treatment classrooms, and for a subgroup of students with disabilities? Researchers replicated the analysis with two different samples (studies 1 and 2), and compared results to examine the stability of estimated relationships, as well as to answer the secondary research question: How do the characteristics of study participants and program contexts influence the replication of findings? The first study took place in nine low income middle schools in the metropolitan areas of Denver, Colorado, and Austin, Texas. The second study was conducted in three middle schools located in the same large, urban school district in Colorado. Teacher and student participants were part of a school-district-and-university collaboration designed to evaluate the effectiveness of CSR within the context of a district initiative and scale-up study. The samples for both studies included the treatment group from larger randomized control trials of CSR. Teacher quality for both studies was assessed using the CSR Global Quality Rating Score measured through the "Implementation Validity Checklist." Teachers in both studies completed a log to monitor the dosage or amount of CSR intervention children received. The student outcome for both studies was reading comprehension ability, as measured by the reading comprehension subtest of the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test (GMRT), Fourth Edition. Multilevel (random-intercept) models, as implemented in the software program Hierarchical Linear Modeling 7.0 were used to estimate the effects of CSR on outcomes controlling for pretest scores and student demographics. Both studies found that higher quality CSR instruction is associated with higher student outcomes for students in special education. The standardized coefficients in study 1, however, were nearly double those in study 2. Further research is needed to determine possible explanations for these findings. Tables are appended.
