Book EXAMINING THE RELIABILITY OF MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRESS INDICATORS AND THEIR POTENTIAL FOR SUPPORTING THE GOAL OF COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS

Download or read book EXAMINING THE RELIABILITY OF MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRESS INDICATORS AND THEIR POTENTIAL FOR SUPPORTING THE GOAL OF COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS written by Steven Weber and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College and career readiness is the new goal for American students. College and career readiness is a process that begins prior to high school. As school districts implement programs and strategies for supporting college and career readiness, it will be important to analyze which students are off-track. In order to determine readiness, educators will need a set of indicators to monitor. This research study examined the reliability of middle school progress indicators and their potential impact on supporting high school readiness, along with college and career readiness. For the purpose of this study, the following definition of College and Career Readiness was used. In North Carolina, students are considered career and college ready when they have the knowledge and academic preparation needed to enroll and succeed, without the need for remediation, in introductory college credit-bearing courses in English Language Arts and Mathematics within an associate or baccalaureate degree program. These same attributes and levels of achievement are needed for entry into and success in postsecondary workforce education, the military or directly into a job that offers gainful employment and career advancement (North Carolina State Board of Education, 2015). Research in the area of college and career readiness is limited, because the goal of the traditional American high school was to sort and select some students for college and the rest for careers or the workforce. This study provides middle school principals with insight regarding the use of progress indicators that could support decision-making and identification of students who are off-track for high school readiness. Policymakers can utilize current findings to refine or develop new policies regarding college and career readiness and the use of indicators at the middle school level. Parents and students could also benefit from the information presented in this research, if there are middle school progress indicators that could illuminate whether or not each student is on-track for success in high school. This study analyzed multiple indicators that could assist educators as they support each student in becoming high school ready.

This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grades and attendance-not test scores-are the middle grade factors most strongly connected with both high school and college success. In fact, grades and attendance matter more than test scores, race, poverty, or other background characteristics for later academic success. This report follows approximately 20,000 Chicago Public Schools students as they transition from elementary to high school. It is designed to help answer questions about which markers should be used to gauge whether students are ready to succeed in high school and beyond. It also considers the performance levels students need to reach in middle school to have a reasonable chance of succeeding in high school.

Book Accessibility to College and Career Content in Middle School

Download or read book Accessibility to College and Career Content in Middle School written by Kathleen White and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term college and career readiness is a tagline in education today in which learned academic and intellectual skills set the foundation for students beyond a K-12 institution. The practices of ensuring students are ready for the world with 21st century skills is ongoing. The focus of this study is an inquiry as to in what ways can student and staff perceptions inform improvement for college and career readiness access in middle school. Qualitative data via open-ended questions, sought feedback from staff and students providing a narrative using themes derived from in vivo coding and triangulation to establish validity. Based on these findings, access to curriculum and additional guidance from counselors needs to be increased. The findings from this study will add to the existing research by adding the middle school approach to college and career readiness. Equitable exposure to college and career readiness is still seemingly uneven for students. The research reveals that more information needs to be conducted as to how schools can provide the resources in order to offer college and career readiness curriculum in middle schools. Best practices for students are to offer opportunities in which schools can embed these skills in all core classes when alternative electives are not available.

Book You re Hired A College And Career Readiness Course For At risk Middle School Students

Download or read book You re Hired A College And Career Readiness Course For At risk Middle School Students written by Isabella DiBileo and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This honors thesis served multiple purposes: to present information on current best practices for school counselors regarding College and Career Readiness (CCR), design and implement a curriculum for middle grades students at-risk for educational progress, implement the curriculum in a middle school, evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum, as well as determine the curriculum's alignment with national standards. A middle school agreed to participate by allowing me to complete my internship in the counseling office, which included permitting me to implement my College and Career Readiness curriculum as an elective course over the course of one semester. The curriculum that was designed and implemented was guided by research and national standards for school counselors. A total of 11 middle school students volunteered to participate in my study by enrolling in the course. Narrative responses from students were collected prior to initiating the curriculum, and again near completion. Data from time two indicates College and Career Readiness growth for students, and most could verbalize possible barriers to their own college and career goals. Most students demonstrated improved awareness of college admissions procedures as well as realistic career choices. No student indicated that the curriculum was "useless," and the mean usefulness score was 4.54 out of 5. Additionally, the course curriculum is aligned with 100% of the competencies listed within the American School Counselor Association's National Standards for Students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this master's project was to gain insight into the value of providing college and career readiness programs in middle school. Research has shown that students need to have greater self-awareness, resources, and college and career skills as early as middle school in order to be better prepared for high school and beyond. This researched-based project investigated the necessary components (academic and non-academic) needed in such programs. The proposed intervention involved age appropriate activities and group work based on findings from a thorough review of the literature. The goal is to provide middle school students with opportunities to increase their self-awareness, college and career skills, and understanding of the relationship between school, career and their future goals"--Abstract, p. 1.

This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this longitudinal, non-experimental, causal comparative research study was to investigate whether a statistically significant difference existed between the college readiness indicator exam scores of students who participated in an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) and those who did not. This quantitative study compared the archival data results of the AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP English Language, AP English Literature, SAT Reading, SAT Writing, SAT Math, IB Mathematics HL, IB Mathematics SL, and IB English A1 exams of students in two large, urban comprehensive high schools. This study examined participation in an IBMYP middle school and high school exam scores three and four years later. The independent variable in this study was student participation in IBMYP in grades 6-8. There were mixed results in the findings of this study. Students who participated in the IBMYP middle school program achieved better than their non-IBMYP counterparts on the SAT Math, SAT Reading, SAT Writing, IB English A1, AP English Language, AP English Literature, and IB Math HL. Significant differences in scores between IBMYP participants and non-participants were found in all but three of the exams: IB Math SL, AP Calculus AB, and AP Calculus BC.

Book An Analysis of Advancement Via Individual Determination AVID on the Educational Outcomes of Middle School Students

Download or read book An Analysis of Advancement Via Individual Determination AVID on the Educational Outcomes of Middle School Students written by Matthew J. Herzberg and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College readiness continues to be a policy priority for federal, state, and local governments. With the competitive nature of college admissions and the widening achievement and college readiness gap observed between minority students and students in poverty, school and district leaders must find a way to ensure their students are college ready upon graduation. The issue is more pervasive with study findings suggesting eighth grade has a substantial bearing on college readiness, and is also a time of intense emotional and physical change in children. In an effort to improve college readiness outcomes, a Texas school district implemented Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) in their middle schools and high schools. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect that participation in the AVID program has on eighth grade students in terms of the following college readiness performance indicators: achievement, attendance rate, and enrollment in advanced courses. The study used a sample of 250 students who participated in AVID and a sample of 250 students who did not participate in AVID to determine a difference in means using null hypothesis tests. Tests were conducted for STAAR eighth grade mathematics, STAAR Algebra I End of Course (EOC) exam, STAAR eighth grade reading, number of pre-AP courses completed, and number of days in attendance. Results of the study showed that eighth grade students who participated in the AVID program had a significantly higher mean score on STAAR eighth grade math, STAAR eighth grade reading, and number of pre-AP courses completed. Students in AVID had a significantly lower mean score on STAAR Algebra I EOC. In addition, AVID students showed no difference in number of days of school in attendance. Further research was recommended to determine the long-term benefits of AVID beginning in eighth grade, as well as college persistence rates for students who participated in AVID beginning in eighth grade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education is a hot topic. From the stage of presidential debates to tonight's dinner table, it is an issue that most Americans are deeply concerned about. While there are many strategies for improving the educational process, we need a way to find out what works and what doesn't work as well. Educational assessment seeks to determine just how well students are learning and is an integral part of our quest for improved education. The nation is pinning greater expectations on educational assessment than ever before. We look to these assessment tools when documenting whether students and institutions are truly meeting education goals. But we must stop and ask a crucial question: What kind of assessment is most effective? At a time when traditional testing is subject to increasing criticism, research suggests that new, exciting approaches to assessment may be on the horizon. Advances in the sciences of how people learn and how to measure such learning offer the hope of developing new kinds of assessments-assessments that help students succeed in school by making as clear as possible the nature of their accomplishments and the progress of their learning. Knowing What Students Know essentially explains how expanding knowledge in the scientific fields of human learning and educational measurement can form the foundations of an improved approach to assessment. These advances suggest ways that the targets of assessment-what students know and how well they know it-as well as the methods used to make inferences about student learning can be made more valid and instructionally useful. Principles for designing and using these new kinds of assessments are presented, and examples are used to illustrate the principles. Implications for policy, practice, and research are also explored. With the promise of a productive research-based approach to assessment of student learning, Knowing What Students Know will be important to education administrators, assessment designers, teachers and teacher educators, and education advocates.

Book excerpt: In order to ensure that middle school youth are on a path toward higher education and careers, an early introduction to the importance of continuing education past high school is necessary. The middle school years are a vital time to teach the importance of college and career readiness and the linkages to success in life. This issue brief discusses how afterschool programs offer a key opportunity to expose middle school students to higher education options and career paths and to teach them skills that can unlock doors to future career prospects. The afterschool hours offer time for apprenticeships, guest speakers and project-based activities that are not always available during a school day focused on a core curriculum. Middle school is a critical time to ensure that youth are on a clear path to a productive future, and afterschool is an essential support to help middle schoolers move ahead to success in higher education and careers. This brief is a fourth in a series of four Issue Briefs examining critical issues facing middle school youth and the vital role afterschool programs play in addressing these issues.
