Book Examining the Impact of Masculinity Conformity Norms on Adolescent Males and Adult Men

Download or read book Examining the Impact of Masculinity Conformity Norms on Adolescent Males and Adult Men written by Tonya Melynn Anthony and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This systematic review sought to explore the empirical research on the influence of masculine conformity on male adolescents and adults, and how such conformity contributed to the outcomes in the areas of relationships, behavior and psychological well-being. Sixteen articles were selected that met the inclusion criteria with a total population of 3,617 participants, ranging in age from 11 to 33 years old, who were educated, middle-class Caucasian males. The validated instruments utilized were the AMIRS, the MRNI-R, and the CMNI scales, along with other scales to measure academic achievement, gender role conformity, self-esteem, and aggressive and risk-taking behaviors. Despite sample limitations, several recurrent themes were identified as having a strong impact on relationships, behavior, and psychological well-being. The findings highlighted the need for additional research in more diverse cultures in order to gain a full understanding of the influence of conformity to traditional masculinity norms have on different cultures.

Book A New Psychology of Men

Download or read book A New Psychology of Men written by Ronald F. Levant and published by Basic Books (AZ). This book was released on 2003 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by feminist scholars who revolutionized our understanding of women's gender roles, the contributors to this pioneering book describe how men's proscribed roles are neither biological nor social givens, but rather psychological and social constructions. Questioning the traditional norms of the male role (such as the emphasis on aggression, competition, status, and emotional stoicism), they show how some male problems (such as violence, homophobia, devaluation of women, detached fathering, and neglect of health needs) are unfortunate by-products of the current process by which males are socialized. By synthesizing the latest research, clinical experience, and major theoretical perspectives on men and by figuring in cultural, class, and sexual orientation differences, the authors brilliantly illuminate the many variations of male behavior. This book will be a valuable resource not just for students of gender psychology in any discipline but also for clinicians and researchers who need to account for the relationship between men's behavior and the contradictory and inconsistent gender roles imposed on men. This new understanding of men's psychology is sure to enhance the work of clinical professionals-including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, and psychiatric nurses-in helping men reconstruct a sense of masculinity along healthier and more socially just lines.

Book Boys Will Be Boys

Download or read book Boys Will Be Boys written by Aileen Lian and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intimate partner abuse is a pervasive and destructive phenomenon in the United States (Breiding, Chen, & Black, 2014). Although previous research has attempted to define its components and dynamics, the study of psychological abuse is less developed in comparison to research on physical abuse. Some researchers have studied intimate partner abuse alongside American constructs of masculinity but have not adequately extended it to psychological abuse. The present study seeks to examine perceptions of psychological abuse in conjunction with conformity to traditional masculine norms among American cisgender men. Masculine ideology in the U.S. prescribes dominance and control, which is theorized to normalize acts of psychological abuse in heterosexual dating couples (Moore & Stuart, 2005). Men who conform more to masculine norms (high masculine conformity participants) were predicted to rate vignettes of psychological abuse as more normal, less abusive, and less harmful in comparison to men who conform less to masculine norms (low masculine conformity participants). Differences in perceptions were also predicted to be more pronounced when overt psychological abuse was presented compared to when subtle psychological abuse was presented. Results indicated that a relationship between masculine conformity and perceptions of psychological abuse does exist; compared to low masculine conformity participants, high masculine conformity participants rated overt social isolation/restriction behavior as less abusive and less harmful. High masculine conformity participants also rated inducing guilt/shifting responsibility behavior as more normal overall. Further examination of this relationship is recommended, as this research can be used to more effectively address intimate partner abuse in the United States and beyond.

Book The Role of Masculine Norm Conformity in Men s and Women s Relational Satisfaction

Download or read book The Role of Masculine Norm Conformity in Men s and Women s Relational Satisfaction written by Felicity Holmes and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Masculine gender role norms inform expectations regarding the values, standards, and behaviours to which men should ideally conform and consequently, exert an influence on how men function interpersonally, including within their intimate relationships ... [This] thesis investigated the extent to which men's conformity to a broad range of traditional masculine norms were associated with men and their female partners' relationship and sexual satisfaction, as well as the mediating effects of self-disclosure patterns and conflict resolution styles. Study One examined these prospective relationships with a sample of 223 adult males in dating, cohabitating, and married heterosexual relationships ... In Study Two, 300 women in dating, cohabitating, and married heterosexual relationships completed an online, anonymous questionnaire examining women's perceptions of their male partners' masculine norm conformity, their perception of their male partners' self-disclosure patterns and use of conflict resolution tactics, and women's own relationship and sexual satisfaction ... Collectively, these two studies highlight the importance of incorporating a gender-sensitive approach to therapy by considering the role of men's personal constructions of masculinity, from both partners' perspectives, in the assessment and treatment of problems with relationship or sexual satisfaction."--Author abstract.

Book Conformity to Masculine Norms

Download or read book Conformity to Masculine Norms written by Isaac Curtiss Brandt and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an established and growing body of research associating poor health outcomes among men with conformity to socialized masculine gender norms (Bonar et al., 2011; Borsari, Murphy, & Barnett, 2007; Courtenay, 2011). This study explored whether this socialization is subject to change in four individual male participants in a multi-week, small group learning environment called Intergroup Dialogue (IGD). Participants in IGD "closely examine the socially constructed norms and ideologies that guide their (often unconscious) beliefs" (Dessel & Rogge, 2008 p.213). IGD groups met for eight sessions. Pre- and Post-group scores on the Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory-46 (CMNI) were compared. Session-by-session ratings from group facilitators on the Interpersonal Relations Scale (IRS) Checklist-Short form were also collected. Results indicated change in one of the four participant's pre-post total CMNI scores and for all individuals on specific CMNI subscales. Patterns of IRS ratings were noted, paralleling participants' journal entries about their experiences in IGD.

Book Conformity to Masculine Norms Gender Role Conflict and Relationship Satisfaction in Inter male Friendships

Download or read book Conformity to Masculine Norms Gender Role Conflict and Relationship Satisfaction in Inter male Friendships written by Zachary Joseph Rankin and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an early age and consistently throughout the lifespan, men are inundated with messages about what it means to be a man, and consistently discouraged from displaying any vulnerable emotions. Masculinity research has increasingly focused on understanding the effects of traditional norms of masculinity and gender-linked stressors, known as gender role conflict, on the lives and psychological well-being of men. However, little is known about how these factors may impact men's relationship satisfaction in their friendships with other men. In this study, participants' levels of conformity to traditional masculine norms and gender-linked stress were measured and analyzed in relation to their levels of relationship satisfaction in inter-male friendships. Respondents with more conformity to traditional masculine norms were found to have higher levels of gender role conflict, supporting existing research findings. Gender role conflict was found to significantly negatively correlate with friendship satisfaction, suggesting that men experiencing more gender-linked stress in their lives have less fulfilling friendships with other men.

Book An International Psychology of Men

Download or read book An International Psychology of Men written by Chris Blazina and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-01-19 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is the first to provide a contextual understanding of the clinical issues that affect men and masculinity across a wide range of cultural and national settings. It demonstrates that gender can no longer be viewed as an isolated characteristic; in an era of increased globalization, mental health professionals need to take ethnic and cultural issues into account to provide adequate care for male patients. Numerous international perspectives are offered by the contributing authors, authorities from countries such as Australia, Argentina, Denmark, Canada, India, Ireland, and South Africa, on theoretical and clinical innovations for working with men. Their chapters also offer insight into the socio-cultural contexts for counseling men in and from their respective countries by exploring the ways in which "being a man" is socially defined, what unique challenges men face, and how these challenges can be negotiated within their specific cultural settings. Topics addressed will include boyhood notions of manhood, relationship concerns and power, fatherhood, and men’s body image across the life span. This text will ultimately enable mental health practitioners to have a better understanding of how to work more effectively with male clients.

Book The Myth of Masculinity

Download or read book The Myth of Masculinity written by Joseph H. Pleck and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1981 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Joseph Pleck examines and analyzes the full body of research literature on the male role that has appeared since the 1930s and subjects it to a devastating critique. He identifies the components of the "male sex role paradigm" which has been the basis of research for the past forty years, and notes numerous instances of blatant misrepresentation of data, twisted reinterpretations of disconfirming results, misogyny, homophobia, and class bias. He proposes a new theory, the "sex role strain paradigm," offers a reinterpretation of sex role stereotyping, and a critique of research by sociobiologists that allegedly demonstrates a biological basis for male aggression.

Book Exploring the Effects of Masculinity Norms on Attitudes Towards Help Seeking in Males

Download or read book Exploring the Effects of Masculinity Norms on Attitudes Towards Help Seeking in Males written by Lisa A. Lavorgna and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: The twenty-first century has seen a continuous rise in suicide for older, American males. Suicide rates for American males increased by 28% between 1999 and 2018. The number of American males reporting depression and suicidality and seeking mental health treatment continues to depict incongruence compared to the rising number of suicides in American males today. Research has shown that strong identification with fundamental norms of masculinity in the Western world is negatively correlated with help seeking behaviors in American males. Those who were once raised in mid-20th century America, a time of stringent gender role norm socialization, now make up the older generations of Americans. Suicide rates for these groups have been found to be rising, in comparison to those of younger groups who have experienced a time of more fluid, progressive gender role norms.Purpose: The present study seeks to explore the differences of identification with masculinity norms as well as attitudes towards help seeking between Baby Boomer and Generation X age groups collectively and Millennial and Generation Z age groups collectively, in order to uncover a correlation between generational upbringing, gender role norm socialization, and seeking help in time of need. Methods: Participation in the present study took place over the course of four weeks through the use of an anonymous online Qualtrics survey consisting of 73 total items. Data was analyzed based on generational identification as well as based on demographic characteristics. Data was analyzed using subscales found in the inventories used, including the Conformity to Masculinity Norms Inventory (CMNI) and the Barriers to Help Seeking Scale (BHSS). Results: 100 participants completed the online survey in its entirety. The following four subscales saw statistically significant differences between the Baby Boomer and Generation X group, and the Millennial and Generation Z group: Winning, Violence, Primacy of Work, and Pursuit of Status. The subscales for the Barriers to Help Seeking Scale did not indicate statistically significant differences between the two generational groups. When the data was analyzed according to demographic characteristics of the respondents, additional subscales were found to have statistical significance.Discussion: Based on the data collected, the present study cannot definitively conclude that there are statistically significant differences between identification with masculinity norms and attitudes towards help seeking between the Baby Boomer and Generation X group collectively, and the Millennial and Generation Z group collectively. As suicide rates continue to increase for older American males, it is evident that novel research must seek to understand the attitudes towards help seeking that males may face in the midst of a mental health crisis, especially in correlation to the masculinity norms that were socialized at an early age. Additional research focusing on generational views of masculinity, generational views of seeking help during hardship, and how males’ perceptions of these concepts have changed over time can capture how the American mental health field, and how American society overall, can improve their acceptance of males seeking help for mental health treatment.

Book excerpt: One of the most eminent scholars and writers on men and masculinity and the author of the critically acclaimed Manhood in America turns his attention to the culture of guys, aged 16 to 26: their attitudes, their relationships, their rules, and their rituals. “Kimmel is our seasoned guide into a world that, unless we are guys, we barely know exists. As he walks with us through dark territories, he points out the significant and reflects on its meaning.”—Mary Pipher, Ph.D., author of Reviving Ophelia The passage from adolescence to adulthood was once clear. Today, growing up has become more complex and confusing, as young men drift casually through college and beyond—hanging out, partying, playing with tech toys, watching sports. But beneath the appearance of a simple extended boyhood, a more dangerous social world has developed, far away from the traditional signposts and cultural signals that once helped boys navigate their way to manhood—a territory Michael Kimmel has identified as "Guyland." In mapping the troubling social world where men are now made, Kimmel offers a view into the minds and times of America's sons, brothers, and boyfriends, and he works toward redefining what it means to be a man today—and tomorrow. Only by understanding this world and this life stage can we enable young men to chart their own paths, stay true to themselves, and emerge safely from Guyland as responsible and fully formed male adults.
