Book Examining the Association Between Sleep Duration Diet and Body Mass Index in Quebec Children

Download or read book Examining the Association Between Sleep Duration Diet and Body Mass Index in Quebec Children written by Fabiola E. Tatone-Tokuda and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prevalence of obesity in young children is increasing. Sleep duration is suggested to affect the regulation of body weight through changes in metabolic hormones that regulate appetite, food selection, and energy expenditure. Using data obtained from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development, this study prospectively examined: 1) the association between longitudinal sleep duration pattern (LSDP) (age 2.5 to 6 years) and overweight/obesity at age 6 and 7 years; and, 2) whether such an association may be mediated by dietary intake and/or eating behaviour at the population level. Associations were examined using multivariate logistic regression methods, with adjustments for potential confounders. Boys with a 'short persistent or short increasing ' LSDP had significantly greater odds of being overweight/obese at age 6 and 7 years, in comparison to boys with an '11-hour persistent ' LSDP. This association was partially mediated by problematic eating behaviours. LSDP did not associate with overweight/obesity in girls.

Abstract: Objective: Obesity has become one of the major global public epidemic problems while the knowledge of childhood obesity is a bit limited within Chinese study. This review examined the association between sleep duration and childhood overweight and obesity in China. Methods: This systematic review was conducted by searching online electronic resources of papers from PubMed and Chinese database CNKI published up to 2013. The keywords of "sleep" OR "risk factors" AND "obesity OR overweight" AND "child OR adolescent" AND "China OR Hong Kong OR Taiwan" were used for searching and identifying. The search filter to restrict the study design as the observational study written in English or Chinese in these databases was used. Results: Four case-control studies, and eight cross-sectional studies were included in the systematic review. Despite of different method in assessing sleep duration, all included studies suggested that sleep duration is consistently and negatively related with childhood obesity, mainly assessed using Body Mass Index (BMI) in China. Conclusion: Most included articles reported the association between short sleep duration and childhood obesity/overweight. However, given the cross-section nature of the data, the causal relation between sleep duration and obesity remains unclear. Whether sleep duration may be the factor to be considered in childhood obesity prevention strategies remains to be confirmed possibly by studies with longitudinal design or randomized control trials. Book P4 03 04 Sleep Duration and Blood Pressure in Spanish Children with Obesity

Download or read book P4 03 04 Sleep Duration and Blood Pressure in Spanish Children with Obesity written by Gloria Pu00e9rez Gimeno and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IntroductionHypertension is a public health problem and its prevalence in children is on the rise, often continuing into adulthood and increasing the risk related cardiovascular complications. Sleep plays an essential role in childrenu2019s growth and several studies suggest that insufficient sleep duration is associated with hypertension in adults. However, few studies have evaluated this association in children. Thus, the aim of the study is to ascertain whether the sleep duration is a risk factor for elevated blood pressure (BP) in children.MethodsWe studied 776 children (5-18 years old), (46.7% male, 78.8% 5-13 years, 73.6% overweight/obesity). Weight and height were measured and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. BP was measured with an electronic manometer to find a 25.3% of children with an elevated systolic BP (SBP, >P90th) and 14% with an elevated diastolic BP (DBP, >P90th) (Task Force 2017). Sleep duration was assessed by asking the parents u201cu00bfHow many hours does your child sleep in a typical weekday?u201d. Weekday sleep hours were considered since they are more representative of childrenu2019s routines than weekend hours. Hours were converted into a dichotomous variable based on the fulfillment or not of the u201cCanadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth recommendationsu201d: 9-11 hours for 5- to 13-year-olds; 8-10 hours for 14- to 17-year-olds. A spearman correlation analysis was performed between sleep duration, SBP and DBP. Then, a general linear model analysis adjusted for BMI Z-score was done to evaluate differences in SBP and DBP between children following the sleep recommendations. Analyses were stratified by sex and age range (5-13 and 14-17). ResultsIn girls 5-13 years, we found a significant negative correlation between sleep duration and body mass index (BMI) (r=-0.226, p=0.000) and between sleep and systolic BP (r=-0.188, p=0.001). Girls 5-13 years not following sleep recommendations showed significantly higher SBP values than those who followed the recommendations (112u00b111 mmHg vs. 106u00b112 mmHg, p=0.007), independently of BMI. No significant differences were observed in girls 14-17 years nor in males.DiscussionIn the present study, we show that girls 5-13 years with shorter sleep duration show increased SBP values independently of BMI, in contrast to previous studies which showed similar associations that disappeared when adjusting for BMI. Our results support the need for wider strategies in population education so that sleep recommendations are followed by children in the general population.

Book Handbook of nutrition diet and sleep

Download or read book Handbook of nutrition diet and sleep written by Victor R. Preedy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-02 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging literature and research have currently shown that sleep, sleep disturbances, diet and nutrition are interlinked in numerous ways. For example, sleep deprivation alters food intake and snacking behaviour. On the other hand, dietary restriction and obesity alter sleep. Specific nutrients such as caffeine and alcohol also affect sleep. Furthermore, variations in these relationships differ with respect to age, gender and state of health. There is a connection between sleep and disordered nutrition as defined by conditions such as diabetes and metabolic syndrome. This book demonstrates that disruptive sleep patterns can be remedied by appropriate dietary or nutritional changes including the usage of supplements. The contribution of sleep to our daily lives is not yet fully understood, but it is clear that its impact should not be underestimated. This handbook discusses the important relationship between diet and nutrition and disruptive or abnormal sleep in the sub-clinical or clinical setting. Authorities in the field offer a wide range of scientifically sound perspectives and approaches of the link between sleep, nutrition and diet.

Book Parental Time and Obesity

Download or read book Parental Time and Obesity written by Alex McIntosh and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses unique dataset to examine parental influence on children's dietary intake and whether or not the children will become obese. The study shows that household income, parents' time spent with children, and parents' work experiences significantly affect children's energy and fat intake and obesity-related outcomes. For example, the more time mothers spent with their children, the lower the children's Body Mass Index (BMI) was. On the other hand, the more time fathers spent with their children, the higher the children's BMI was. And the more time both fathers and mothers spent with their children, the higher their children's fat intake (as a percentage of energy) was. In general, mothers tended to have a greater effect on their children's dietary intake than fathers did. Both parents seemed to influence children ages 9-11 more than they did children ages 13-15. This publication is based on a government report augmented by a full index and related literature report.

Book Associations Between Sleep Duration and Indicators of Cardio metabolic Disease in Canadian Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Associations Between Sleep Duration and Indicators of Cardio metabolic Disease in Canadian Children and Adolescents written by Larine Sluggett and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes in Canadian children and adolescents have increased rapidly in recent years, so research exploring modifiable risk factors is critical. Partial sleep loss has been linked with deteriorations in indicators of cardio-metabolic health. The objectives of this study were 1) to examine associations among short sleep duration and indicators of cardio-metabolic disease in Canadian children and adolescents, and 2) to identify determinants of short sleep duration. Using the 2007-2009 Canadian Health Measure Survey dataset as a data source, logistics regression models were developed to examine associations among sleep duration and indicators of cardio-metabolic disease and to identify predictors of short sleep duration. Short sleep duration was linked with greater odds of overweight/obesity in boys and adolescents only. Age was a strong predictor of inadequate sleep duration. Interventions designed to address sleep loss should focus on adolescents."--Leaf ii.

Book Association Between Short Sleep Duration and Obesity in a Pediatric Population

Download or read book Association Between Short Sleep Duration and Obesity in a Pediatric Population written by David D. Feist and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem: Obesity is a dangerous and costly disease affecting greater numbers of adults and children every year. While the prevalence of obesity has dramatically increased over the past few decades, the average sleep duration of adults and children has noticeably decreased. The purpose of this literature review is to identify and discuss any association between short sleep duration and obesity. Methods: A PubMed search using the Weill Cornell Medical College Library website was conducted for articles regarding the relationship between sleep duration and weight gain or obesity. Only English journal articles available in full-text online versions and written in the last 5 years were selected for this literature review. Results: Many of the studies analyzed for this review found a significant association between obesity and shorter sleep duration. However, not all studies used the same tool for sleep duration measurement. All of the studies utilizing actigraphy to monitor sleep duration found a correlation between shorter sleep duration and increased BMI. Conclusion: Future studies where sleep duration is frequently and objectively measured would provide more consistent results and assist researchers in formulating appropriate sleep duration guidelines for adult and pediatric populations.
