City Logistics is the process of totally optimising urban logistics activities by considering the social, environmental, economic, financial and energy impacts of urban freight movement. City Logistics initiatives are required to solve urban freight transport problems including high levels of traffic congestion, negative environmental impacts, high energy consumption and a shortage of labour. The focus of this work is on modelling City Logistics. Modelling is of crucial importance, since estimates of the impacts generated by City Logistics measures are required for evaluating them. It highlights the formulation of mathematical models of vehicle routing and scheduling with Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), optimal terminal locations and impact estimation by City Logistics measures. Heuristics techniques such as genetic algorithms, simulated annealing and tabu search are also given to identify approximate optimal solution of these combinatorial optimisation problems. ITS provides powerful tools for efficiently managing and operating vehicle fleets. Sophisticated logistics systems can now be developed by integrating Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in conjunction with application software. In this context, the book presents a theoretical and practical treatment of modelling City Logistics based on ITS.

This will mean achieving its climate change and renewables targets, including a 34 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020 (relative to 1990); at least an 80 per cent reduction by 2050; and by 2020 ensuring that 15 per cent of energy comes from renewable sources. This transition will require major investment in modern technologies: to renovate buildings; to provide for the electrification of much of our heating, industry and transport; and to move to cleaner power generation. It will also require major changes in the way energy is used by individuals, industry and the public sector. At the core of the Bill is the need to ensure that, as older power plants are taken offline and electricity demand continues to increase, the UK remains able to generate enough energy to meet its needs. The Energy Bill will: implement the electricity market reforms set out in the white paper 'Planning our electric future ... ' (Cm. 8099, ISBN 9780101809924); clarify the role of the regulator, Ofgem; establish an Office for Nuclear Regulation; make changes to the offshore transmission regulatory framework; and make provisions for the potential sale of Government Pipeline and Storage System. Book excerpt: This book brings together results of studies on progresses and challenges in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Lesotho, Kenya, Botswana, Madagascar, Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda and Nigeria. The authors focus on selected goals as cases; and the book presents resulting lessons that can inform the post-2015 development agenda. The studies are against the background that in September 2000, world leaders from 189 countries, including 147 Heads of State, gathered at the United Nations General Assembly to consider the challenges of the new millennium. They adopted the Millennium Declaration, which set out a vision for inclusive and sustainable globalization: UN 2000 (A/RES/55/2). The leaders pledged to work towards ensuring that conditions of extreme poverty are eradicated wherever they existed. To realise this declaration, the UN established eight MDGs to be achieved by 2015. The goals were broken down into 18 concrete targets and 48 indicators to track progresses in implementation. For the years lost 2000, countries in sub-Saharan Africa have been striving to achieve the goals. So far, some have achieved some of the goals, and the results toward the rest of the goals are also by and large positive, though off-target.

Alongside these iconic images lie concerns about environmental degradation, declining wildlife populations, and about worsening poverty of pastoral peoples. East Africa presents in microcosm the paradox so widely seen across sub Saharan Africa, where the world’s poorest and most vulnerable populations live alongside some of the world’s most outstanding biodiversity resources. Over the last decade or so, community conservation has emerged as a way out of poverty and environmental problems for these rural populations, focusing on the sustainable use of wildlife to generate income that could underpin equally sustainable development. Given the enduring interest in East African wildlife, and the very large tourist income it generates, these communities and ecosystems seem a natural case for green development based on community conservation. This volume is focused on the livelihoods of the Maasai in two different countries - Kenya and Tanzania. This cross-border comparative analysis looks at what people do, why they choose to do it, with what success and with what implications for wildlife. The comparative approach makes it possible to unpack the interaction of conservation and development, to identify the main drivers of livelihoods change and the main outcomes of wildlife conservation or other land use policies, while controlling for confounding factors in these semi-arid and perennially variable systems. This synthesis draws out lessons about the successes and failures of community conservation-based approach to development in Maasailand under different national political and economic contexts and different local social and historical particularities.
