Book Examining Intrapersonal Factors and Risk Outcomes in Latino Youth

Download or read book Examining Intrapersonal Factors and Risk Outcomes in Latino Youth written by Michael H. Forde and published by Michael H. Forde. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines how personal factors such as religion, future goals, and perceived social support impact behavioral risks in Latino youth from Washington, DC, based on the Adelante study. This population faces challenges including barriers to healthcare access, limited community resources, and an increased exposure to violence, making it vital to understand resilience and protective factors in this group. Using data from the second wave Adelante community-level survey of youth (N=723), we analyzed the influence of positive youth development (PYD) constructs, social support, religiosity, and future aspirations on risk outcomes such as substance use, sexual behaviors, and violence. Religiosity and future aspirations were independent variables, social support was a moderator, and the PYD constructs confidence, connection, competence, and contribution were mediators. Regression models examined the influence of independent variables on risky behaviors, while mediation analysis investigated how PYD constructs impact these relationships, with Sobel's test assessing mediation significance. Moderation analysis examined how varying social support levels affected these relationships, and path analysis and moderated mediation tested the theoretical model's fit using statistics such as chi-square, CFI, and RMSEA. Results indicated that higher religiosity and aspirations correlated with fewer risky behaviors and household structure modestly influenced social support. PYD constructs both partially and fully mediated the relationships between religiosity, aspirations, and risk behaviors, and social support moderated these effects, mostly strengthening protective influences in contexts of lower support. The study suggests promoting PYD and enhancing personal factors such as religiosity and social support to reduce risks among Latino youth. These findings support the development of culturally informed public health strategies and interventions to foster resilience and prevent risky behaviors in this demographic.

Book Parental and Youth Attributions Acculturation and Treatment Engagement of Latino Families in Youth Mental Health Services

Download or read book Parental and Youth Attributions Acculturation and Treatment Engagement of Latino Families in Youth Mental Health Services written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latino youth have higher rates of unmet mental health needs and Latino families experience poorer treatment retention in youth mental health services than Non-Hispanic Whites. Current research suggests that psychosocial factors such as health locus of control (HLOC) or Acculturation are related to physical health prevention and health promotion behaviors. However, no studies to date have examined whether these factors play a role in youth' and parents' participation (that is, Engagement) in youth mental health services. The current proposal aims to elucidate the relationships between HLOC, Acculturation, and Engagement in youth mental health treatment for a Latino parent (n = 80) and a Latino youth (n = 77) sample, taken from the NIMH-funded TWIST study. Pearson correlation analyses were conducted to examine associations between Acculturation and HLOC, and regression analyses were conducted to examine whether Acculturation and HLOC predict Engagement in youth mental health treatment. Consistent with existing theories, results show a significantly positive correlation between youth American Cultural Affinity (ACA) and Internal HLOC, and a significantly negative correlation between parental ACA and Internal HLOC. Contrary to our hypotheses, Acculturation and HLOC did not predict Engagement in either adult or youth sample. Given the limited sample size, this study should be viewed as utilizing a pilot sample of the larger TWIST investigation. As such, projections of sample sizes needed to detect effects are considered and discussed. The current study marks the initiation of a program of research with the long-term objective of examining the relationship between Acculturation, HLOC, Engagement, and outcomes for African American, Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander, and non-Hispanic White youth.

Book The Impact of Socio Ecological Risk Factor Clustering on Mental Emotional and Behavioral Problems in Hispanic Adolescents

Download or read book The Impact of Socio Ecological Risk Factor Clustering on Mental Emotional and Behavioral Problems in Hispanic Adolescents written by Lila A Cathcart and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hispanic youth are often at greater risk for developing mental, emotional, and behavioral (MEB) problems, such as substance use, sexual risk behaviors, and internalizing and externalizing symptoms, compared to non-Hispanic white youth. Socio-ecological risk and protective factors, including family, school, peer, and acculturation factors, have been shown to be associated individually with a variety of MEB problems. This study examines the clustering of these risk and protective factors and evaluates whether there are specific subgroups of Hispanic adolescents, who are at greater risk for a variety of MEB problems. Data come from two randomized controlled trials, and were collected at baseline, when adolescents were in eighth grade, and then 6, 18, and 30 months post-baseline. Cross-sectional analyses included 959 participants, whereas longitudinal analyses utilized the 474 control group participants to evaluate associations in the absence of intervention. Using latent class analysis, three subgroups (Low, Medium, and High Socio-Ecological Risk) were identified based on socio-ecological risk and protective factors. Results indicated that adolescents in the higher socio-ecological risk subgroups reported significantly higher MEB problems at both baseline and 30 months post-baseline. Furthermore, the majority of adolescents remained in the same socio-ecological risk group across time points. Those who remained in the Low Socio-Ecological Risk group reported significantly lower MEB problems at 30 months post-baseline compared to those who remained in the High or Medium Socio-Ecological Risk groups. These results highlight the stability and impact of the clustering of socio-ecological risk and protective factors on MEB problems and support previous literature in finding the importance of these factors during early adolescence. Implications include the importance of screening youth for multiple risk and protective factors during early adolescence, as well as examining similar socio-ecological risk subgroups as potential moderators of the effects of preventive interventions.

This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1992, marijuana use among 8th graders has tripled, among 10th graders it has nearly doubled, and its use among high school seniors has increased by 50 percent. The use of other illicit drugs is also heavily on the rise. Yet, there exists very little research and literature on the etiology and prevention of drug abuse among those most at risk--disadvantaged, inner-city, minority youth. The Etiology and Prevention of Drug Abuse Among Minority Youth is an important first step in remedying this gap in the literature and for getting at the heart of the psychosocial factors that promote and sustain drug use among minority youth. The book’s chapters evolved from a program of research funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and Cornell University Medical College’s Institute for Prevention Research concerning drug abuse prevention with multi-ethnic youth. So that you might learn effective strategies for intervening with at-risk adolescents and teenagers, The Etiology and Prevention of Drug Abuse Among Minority Youth discusses: correlates and predictors of alcohol and drug use community-based skills interventions how youths offset feelings of distress or self-derogation by bonding with deviant peers the advantages of community-oriented outreach programs the role of cultural factors as they shape vulnerability to adolescent alcohol and drug use the role of ethnic identity as a moderator of psychosocial risk for alcohol and marijuana use the needs of youth at high risk for future use preventing gateway drug use drug use among youth living in homeless shelters the conditions of public housing and how they affect the etiology of drug abuseAn essential tool for policymakers, social workers, clinicians, researchers, psychiatrists, and other professionals in chemical dependency and narcotics rehabilitation, The Etiology and Prevention of Drug Abuse Among Minority Youth provides you with vital insight on the causes of drug use among minority adolescents, the strengths and limitations of different intervention approaches, and incentive to find appropriate ways for working with at-risk, minority teenagers.
