Book Examining Gender Equity in the Elementary School Classroom

Download or read book Examining Gender Equity in the Elementary School Classroom written by Kate Venzon and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite Title IX and other legislation aimed at equity in education, research shows that gender bias is still a major problem at all levels of schooling. As proponents of equity and democracy, the question of whether boys and girls are actually receiving an equal education looms as an important barometer of democratic practices. My paper will explore this issue and how schools can provide girls equitable educational opportunities. Research has uncovered many problems that need to be addressed and changed. The results of how girls are receiving an inferior education include classroom environment. teacher-student interactions and attention in the classroom, nontraditional and vocational career pursuits. and harassment Who, in general. becomes an empowered learner is dictated by subtle and complex gender biases which affect all aspects of classroom life for students. This includes who interacts most with the teacher; who dominates the classroom; and who generates more learning opportunities? I conducted my study at an elementary school in North San Diego County, which has a low socioeconomic, high minority student population. First I reviewed literature about gender equity in education and examined what has been found in this area of study. Then I researched suggestions for how to best meet the needs of both genders. Next, I conducted my research through observations of students and teachers at one school site in nine classrooms (grades 3-5). Without disclosing the topic of my research to anyone, I observed teacher-student interactions and examined classroom characteristics and environment When gender biases occurred in the classrooms, I recorded frequency counts on observation checklists. In the classrooms where I observed, boys were called on significantly more often than girls were. Furthermore, teachers gave boys far more attention, interactions, follow-up questions, verbal feedback, and class time than they did girls. Boys received more attention in quantity, and they received higher quality interactions. Girls and boys are not receiving an equitable education. Thus, in general, boys become the empowered learners, while girls are sent the message that teachers value boys' education more than that of girls. By not giving girls an equal voice, or making girls feel like their voice is unimportant, it directly affects their self-esteem and their ability to succeed in the classroom and beyond. My study promises to raise awareness, produce dialogue among educators, and facilitate change by offering readers suggestions on how to achieve gender equity in our classrooms. If we allow gender bias to continue to be an obstacle to equitable education, we are cheating half of the U.S. population. Given that this discrimination is not only unjust to girls and women, but to our society, by robbing the country of much of its talent, educators need to empower all students regardless of race, national origin, or gender.

Book Don t Worry You Can Still be a Flight Attendant Examining Implicit and Explicit Gender Bias in the Classroom Teacher student Relationships and Their Effect on Student Math Achievement

Download or read book Don t Worry You Can Still be a Flight Attendant Examining Implicit and Explicit Gender Bias in the Classroom Teacher student Relationships and Their Effect on Student Math Achievement written by Elisabeth Hodge and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to discover how students perceive gender bias and the teacher-student relationships in the math classrooms surveyed, to determine if the teachers involved in the study are aware of any implicit or explicit gender biases, and to ascertain if the teachers who possess the gender biases realize how the biases impact the teacher-student relationships. This pilot study examined the teacher-student relationship, in terms of conflict, contact, closeness, and trust, teacher implicit gender biases, and explicit gender biases. There were three methods of data collection: teacher surveys, student surveys, and teacher focus groups. The data was collected in a middle-class suburban Massachusetts school district in the third and fourth grades. By collecting three different types of data, the researcher was able to examine teacher-student relationships and implicit and explicit gender biases from both the student and the teacher perspectives. Results revealed that explicit biases are less predominant, but that teachers still need to be cautious of implicit biases in math instruction.

Book Gender Bias in Elementary Education

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the research findings on gender differences in education, the purpose of this project is to develop curriculum for a professional development course for teachers on how to examine and enhance the way they differentiate their approach to boys and girls in their classrooms. It will look at how teachers react to students of different genders in the areas of math, science, and language arts as well as how teachers approach resolution with regard to behavior problems in their classrooms. This professional development will include strategies that teachers might use when planning instruction based on what they know about the development of boys and girls in various subject areas. It will also promote reflection on how they approach behavior of boys and girls in their classroom to build a classroom community that addresses the needs of both male and female students based on the way current research shows how each group learns.

Book An Examination of Gender Bias in Requests for Assistance with Academic and Behavioral Concerns

Download or read book An Examination of Gender Bias in Requests for Assistance with Academic and Behavioral Concerns written by Sharin Palladino Green and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that gender bias exists in education is well documented, but can a school psychologist assume gender bias in all school psychological referrals? This study tested this assumption by investigating gender bias in requests for assistance for students with academic and behavioral concerns. One hundred forty-six teachers and teacher education majors read and responded to four gender-neutral vignettes. In each vignette they rated the severity and likelihood of seeking assistance. Results suggest that although female teachers rated the vignettes as more severe than males, overall the likelihood of seeking assistance did not differ based on the gender of the student in the vignette. Among the implications of this finding for school psychologists is that while gender bias is prevalent in a number of areas within education, when given gender-neutral vignettes teachers did not report a bias in seeking assistance for students based on gender.

Book excerpt: The fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are being refined to prepare learners for 21st-century careers. The jobs in the STEM fields are on the rise, but there is still a lack of representation of women in these fields. Gender stereotypes and biased viewpoints on gender may prevent female interest and success in STEM and can be found in children as young as 5 years old. The purpose of this study was to examine if biased views on gender roles significantly affect kindergarten participants' viewpoints on STEM-based jobs, interest, and overall success in STEM-based projects. The study included the use of gender-neutral LEGOs and compared viewpoints on gender in STEM-related fields in children as young as 5 years old. The study focused on social role theory, examining gender stereotypes and their effects in STEM interest and success for students in a kindergarten classroom. in rural northern New Jersey. The setting of the study was a kindergarten classroom in elementary school. The participants were interviewed and followed during the course of the 5-week study. The design of the study was qualitative with emphasis on experimental. Findings were correlated using Pearson's statistical formula to indicate correlations between student bias, interest, success, and birthdates. The study found that incorporating STEM-based learning activities via the use of block play and incorporation of the engineering process changed viewpoints on biased gender roles in STEM based jobs. The study also found that along with a change in bias, student interest also indicated greater success in STEM-based learning in females more than in males. (ProQuest abstract).

Book Why Art Education

Download or read book Why Art Education written by David F. Lopez and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study investigated the relationship between arts education and academic achievement. Of specific interest was whether teaching the arts for their own sake influenced academic achievement in language arts and mathematics. It was hypothesized that it would influence children's self-efficacy. The sample consisted of 328 children from grades 2-5. Academic efficacy was measured with the Agency for Effort and Ability subscales of the "Student Perceptions of Control Questionnaire: Academic Domain," while artistic efficacy was measured with an adapted version of the same test. Academic achievement was assessed with teacher-assigned grades for mathematics, science, and reading. A multivariate grade analysis of variance was used to examine possible gender and age-related differences in artistic ability, artistic effort, academic ability, academic effort, and achievement. The new measure of artistic efficacy used in the study did reliably differentiate between beliefs regarding artistic effort and ability. Data clearly showed a strong relationship between academic and artistic efficacy. Findings suggest that there is significant cognitive transfer from arts education to other academic areas.
