Book excerpt: Excerpt from Examination of Water: For Sanitary and Technic Purposes The scope of the present work is sufficiently indicated in the title. In its compilation we have endeavored to select processes which are trustworthy and practicable, and to describe them concisely and clearly. Independently of the treatment which the topic has received in works on general hygiene and sanitary chemistry, there are several special manuals at hand, but they are limited in scope, and contain much matter which does not bear on the problems that confront the sanitarian and industrial chemist, devoting much space to the description of processes that are not generally employed, and to the presentation of the details of a local professional quarrel. Those already familiar with the literature of this subject, will notice the omission of certain processes which have long held a prominent place. Among these may be mentioned the use of soap solution for the determination of hardness. Hehner has shown that this is frequently inaccurate, and has devised the method which we describe. Allen also takes this view, and has proposed a similar method. In view of the observations of Percy Smith and others as to the colorimetric tests for nitrates and nitrites, and our own experience of their convenience, we have described them to the exclusion of the more troublesome and uncertain processes heretofore in use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Examination of Water for Sanitary and Technical Purposes IN the period that has elapsed since the publication of the first edition Of this work, many processes for water analysis have been proposed, and we have included in the present revision such of these as seem to us of substantial value. In particular we may mention the methods recom mended by the Chemical Section of the American Associa tion for the Advancement of Science, and the application of the Kjeldahl process to the determination of the organic nitrogen. The adoption of the former methods will serve to secure uniformity in analytical data, while it is to be hoped that 'chemists generally will investigate and report on the latter, in order that a basis for the interpretation of results may be Obtained. NO material change has been made in the description of the general Quantitative Analysis, in which we have followed to a large extent the methods indicated by Fresenius, selecting those best adapted to technical purposes. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Analysis for Sanitary and Technical Purposes In addition to waters from the above-named sources, the analyst has to deal with sewage, drainage from cultivated land, effluents from sewage works, polluted stream and river waters, effluents from various industrial works, &c., all of which may be examined by the same processes as are used in the analysis of waters for drinking purposes. The sanitary analysis of a sample of water is not a full analysis, nor is it necessary to estimate every constituent present in order to arrive at its suitability for drinking and general household purposes. The analysis is so arranged that it gives definite information upon the question whether a water contains sewage or other organic pollution, or any deleterious matters, such as poisonous metals, and this is done by apply ing special qualitative or quantitative tests for those which are injurious ingredients. In searching for pollution by organic matter, the amount of carbon and nitrogen present in the latter are estimated, and, in addition, some of the products into which organic matter is known to decompose by oxidation are determined. Though a complete analysis with a long list of figures looks imposing, still for sanitary purposes all that is required is to prove whether the sample Of water is fit or unfit for drinking purposes, and therefore the determinations can be narrowed down to a few tests which are absolutely essential. For an ordinary sanitary analysis the following estimations are made: Total solid matter, free ammonia, albuminoid ammonia, nitrogen as nitrates, nitrogen as nitrites, oxygen absorbed, and chlorine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Analysis for Sanitary Purposes: Chemical and Biological The following pages, with the exception of the last two chapters, were originally compiled for use in the writer's classes, making as he believes a fitting conclusion to a year's work in General Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis by introducing the student to some of the processes of Quantitative Analysis. The work is given in the simplest form and does not even presuppose a knowledge of Qualitative Analysis. It has been successfully performed by a number of different classes and has been found not too difficult for the average student. Interest has always been aroused. In giving these pages to the public the writer hopes to serve his fellow teachers by saving them a large measure of the labor it has cost him to put the subject of water analysis in a form to be presented to young students. He trust also that physicians may find these pages useful. The busy physician feels the lack of suitable simple processes for forming accurate judgement on the potableness of water. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Examination of Water, Chemical and Bacteriological Knowledge of ordinary' quantitative analysis is here necessarily assumed; therefore the merest sug gestions are given for determination of the mineral matters present in a water, while the items properly lying Within the scope of a sanitary examination are dealt with more at length. Upon the bacteriological side, only so much is touched upon as has been demonstrated to be of real service to the water-examiner; leaving the great field of ultimate differentiation to be further explored, and rendered still more practically useful, by the professed bacteriologist. Book Water Analysis for Sanitary Purposes

Download or read book Water Analysis for Sanitary Purposes written by E. Frankland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Analysis for Sanitary Purposes: With Hints for the Interpretation of Results Pure water, strictly so called, is not to be found in nature. Whether rain be received directly from the clouds, or obtained indirectly after it has washed the surface of the earth and has formed streams, or has percolated deep into the ground and issued forth again from springs - in every case the water contains substances which, from a chemical point of view, are impurities. It rests with the analyst now-a-days to determine, what formerly the consumer had to discover for himself by long and perhaps hazardous experience, whether the impurities found in water are such a nature as to render it unsuitable for the particular purpose for which it is intended to be used. The exhaustive chemical examination of a sample of water is one of the most tedious and troublesome operations known to chemists. It requires weeks, sometimes even months, for its completion.
