Sustained elevated rates of turnover indicate a significant problem with job satisfaction in this field. Despite many years of research on this topic, neither the global nor the American gerontological community has reached a consensus on which factors have the most significant impact on job satisfaction. This systematic review examined eight studies regarding nursing assistants' job satisfaction in nursing homes across the United States. These studies were located by utilizing ProQuest and PsycInfo databases. Each of the articles reviewed was found in the databases mentioned above or located via chain searching reference pages of items in the databases. These studies must have taken place in the United States, pertained to the job satisfaction of nursing assistants employed by nursing homes, and must have been published in the year 2000 or later. The Job Demands Resource (JD-R) model and Work-Family Conflict theory were utilized in this study to provide context for why nursing assistant turnover rates are elevated. Developing an understanding of these turnover rates will provide facilities with an opportunity to improve the lives and work experiences of their nursing assistants by implementing changes that improve job satisfaction, such as reducing work-related strain, increasing support, and facilitating financial well-being. There is a need for current and focused reviews of nursing assistants' experiences in the United States; this review aimed to address that need.

Retooling for an Aging America calls for bold initiatives starting immediately to train all health care providers in the basics of geriatric care and to prepare family members and other informal caregivers, who currently receive little or no training in how to tend to their aging loved ones. The book also recommends that Medicare, Medicaid, and other health plans pay higher rates to boost recruitment and retention of geriatric specialists and care aides. Educators and health professional groups can use Retooling for an Aging America to institute or increase formal education and training in geriatrics. Consumer groups can use the book to advocate for improving the care for older adults. Health care professional and occupational groups can use it to improve the quality of health care jobs.

Book excerpt: This research examined the relationship between job satisfaction and knowledge of the elderly among nurses in a long-term-care (LTC) facility. Additionally, the relationship between care satisfaction of residents and job satisfaction of nurses was evaluated. Nurses in a LTC facility completed a Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) and Facts on Aging Quiz (FAQ). Residents of the facility completed the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ). All results were input in SPSS ver. 20 for analysis. Findings showed that, contrary to the research hypothesis, there was no statistically significant relationship between Palmore's FAQ and Spector's JSS. Insufficient data was collected to determine if a statistically significant relationship existed between nurses' job satisfaction and patient/client satisfaction with care. Those nurses who participated in the study proved to be satisfied with their jobs. Likewise, residents that participated in the study proved to be satisfied with the quality of care they received. These pieces of information are consistent with the hypothesized association between nurse job satisfaction and client care satisfaction though a statistical test for significance was not performed. Additional research is needed, with a larger sample size, to further examine the impact that these factors may have on each other. These findings will help porvide the LTC facility, in which the research was conducted, with ideas for creating a better working and living environment. Ideally, this study will help the facility recognize the need to better educate professional healthcare staff about aging-related issues. Such education will likely help maintain the job satisfaction among the professional staff. Such satisfaction will also, probably, help ensure that clients of the facility continue to receive quality care.

Each chapter provides distinct responses to the question of why job quality matters, coupled to a contention about for whom or for what job quality matters most. Book excerpt: The population of the United States is aging: as the proportion of retirees to working-age population increases, the future needs of the elderly and long term care needs will require careful consideration by healthcare providers. Just as personal care dependency increases with age so does the proportion of older persons institutionalized at any point in time. As of 1990, of the 30 million persons over the age of 65, approximately 24 percent required some long-term care services (Feldstein, 1993). The majority of the elderly in long-term care can be expected to be cared for by nursing assistants who make up 45-50 percent of nursing home staff and provide 90 percent of the care (Wagnild 1988, Waxman et al. 1984). Identified in the literature has been the need to develop strategies for reducing a long-identified problem of nursing assistant employment turnover in long-term care facilities. Using Herzberg's (1959) Motivational Theory as a theoretical framework, this study evaluated the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover of employment of nursing assistants in long-term care. Utilizing a structured qualitative interview setting, a comparative correlation of employee retention and job satisfaction was examined. Appropriate demographic data were collected. Data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics for the demographic data and content analysis for the nursing assistant focus group interviews. Information obtained from the focus group interviews was utilized to identify overriding themes that provide insight to factors related to job satisfaction/dissatisfaction and reasons nursing assistants stay or leave a position. Overall the data from the investigative project identified that the work itself is the most important factor related to job satisfaction for nursing assistants. Nursing assistants need to have attachment and feelings for residents in order to do the job, These feelings of caring and self-worth contribute to job satisfaction and are closely tied to the reasons nursing assistants stay in a position and seem to out-weigh the extrinsic factors of dissatisfaction: pay and communication. However, these positive feelings aren't enough by themselves to decrease turnover of nursing assistant employment in long-term care. Issues of respect, communication and pay do have an effect on the self-esteem of nursing assistants and will ultimately outweigh the good feelings one has about the work itself. Factors related to lack of respect, poor communication and low pay were identified as important in all of the study facilities as job dissatisfiers and reasons nursing assistants would leave a position.

Book excerpt: Shifts in the age composition of the workforce coupled with dynamic definitions of retirement represent important issues that influence work processes and, more generally, the experience of working across one’s career. For example, redefinitions of careers and the changing nature of working have contributed to the emergence of distinct forms and patterns of work experiences across the prototypical work lifespan. Likewise, older individuals are increasingly delaying retirement in favor of longer-term labor force participation. The study of age and work, and work and retirement by industrial, work, and organizational (IWO) psychologists and scholars of human resources management and organizational behavior (HR/OB) has recently proliferated in part as a result of such trends, along with the recognition that age-related processes are important indicators of various proximal (e.g., job attitudes, work behaviors, work motives, and wellbeing) and distal outcomes (e.g., sustainable employability, climates for aging, and firm performance) at various levels of abstraction in modern work environments. Recent theoretical advances have suggested that age, along with individual psychological factors and various contextual influences can jointly influence work outcomes that contribute to long-term employment success, including work performance, job attitudes, work orientations, and motivations. Similar theoretical developments concerning retirement have postulated individual and contextual elements that drive success in the transition from career and work roles to non-work and leisure as well as post-retirement bridge employment roles. In this Research Topic, we aim to curate a collection of papers that are representative of current trends and advances in thinking about and investigating the role of age in workplace processes and the changing nature of retirement. Our hope is to showcase various contemporary ideas and rigorous empirical studies as a means to inform broader thinking and to support enhanced theorizing and organizational practice regarding these processes.
