Book Unique Fibrous Flame Arrestor Materials for Explosion Protection

Download or read book Unique Fibrous Flame Arrestor Materials for Explosion Protection written by Ralph L. Hough and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flame arrestor serves to prevent the propagation of a flame throughout a flammable media while allowing free passage of the media. Organic foams now being utilized in aircraft fuel cells as arrestors exhibit two serious limitations. These limitations are hydrolytic and thermal instability while in the fuel tank environment. A need therefore exists for new arrestor materials which are more compatible with the currently operational fuel tank environment. In addition, it is desirable that such materials provide potential compatability with more severe environments which might exist in advanced flight vehicle fuel tanks. During this feasibility study, eighteen different combinations of materials and geometries were fabricated and examined for such properties as air flow and density, and compared to baseline polyure-thane foam. Promising arrestors were identified by screening in the Hough Laboratory flame tube facility. Some of these arrestors show considerable promise with respect to low density, low cost, extreme resistance to degradation, and effectiveness as a flame arrestor. (Author-PL).

Book Development of High Temperature Fire and Explosive Suppression Systems

Download or read book Development of High Temperature Fire and Explosive Suppression Systems written by Joseph P. Gillis and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program was conducted to develop and evaluate an aircraft chemical extinguishant fire and explosion suppression system for use in high ambient temperature areas of aircraft. System performance was investigated in simulated aircraft fuel tanks of 100, 500 and 1000 gallons capacity. The combustibles used to create the fires and explosions were JP-4 and JP-5 fuels. The ignition sources utilized were small arms ammunition and electric sparks. Suppression system components have been subjected to qualification tests. A functioning system was subjected to a fuel slosh test and agent distribution test in a 67 gallon cylindrical tank. The system developed can substantially reduce the explosion hazard potential associated with the penetration of incendiary projectiles into the flammable ullage volume of aircraft fuel tanks. Book Integrated Aircraft Fuel Tank Fire and Explosion Protection Systems Phase I and II

Download or read book Integrated Aircraft Fuel Tank Fire and Explosion Protection Systems Phase I and II written by Q. C. Malmberg and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft fuel tank fire and explosion protection techniques are described in this two part report which covers both state-of-the-art and advanced concepts. The state-of-the-art section reviews, in handbook form, the fire and explosion protection techniques currently available for immediate aircraft incorporation. These fire protection techniques include open celled flexible foam, closed cell rigid foam, purge mats, and fire extinguishing systems. Both fully packed and voided reticulated foam, nitrogen inerting, fuel fogging, and extinguisher type explosion suppression systems are discussed under the heading of explosion protection techniques. The advanced explosion protection technique section includes descriptions of on-board nitrogen generating concepts and combination systems of foam/nitrogen/fuel-air fog. In addition, the data and results from a small scale test program evaluating the combination type protection concepts is presented.

Book Evaluation of High Temperature Fire and Explosion Suppressant Configurations for Aircraft Fuel System Applications

Download or read book Evaluation of High Temperature Fire and Explosion Suppressant Configurations for Aircraft Fuel System Applications written by G. L Ball (III.) and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program was conducted for investigation of materials to provide improved thermal resistance in an aviation fuel environment. Toward providing polymerics structures with improved thermal resistance, four classes of materials were investigated. These were coated foams, uncoated foams, filled thermoplastics, and unfilled thermoplastics. Specific materials were selected and evaluated for their retention of mechanical performance as a function of time following exposure to JP-5 fuel at elevated temperatures. The most promising materials obtained in the program consisted of a polyester fiber mat and a low-density open- celled polyimide foam. Of the thermoplastics investigated, the nylon, polyimide, and polymer 360 all exhibited substantial retention of mechanical properties in the hyperthermal fuel environment. Of importance was the inclusion of glass fillers, which provided geometrical integrity to the thermoplastic while at the elevated temperatures.

Book Aviation Fuels with Improved Fire Safety

Download or read book Aviation Fuels with Improved Fire Safety written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-09-18 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reduction of the fire hazard of fuel is critical to improving survivability in impact-survivable aircraft accidents. Despite current fire prevention and mitigation approaches, fuel flammability can overwhelm post-crash fire scenarios. The Workshop on Aviation Fuels with Improved Fire Safety was held November 19-20, 1996 to review the current state of development, technological needs, and promising technology for the future development of aviation fuels that are most resistant to ignition during a crash. This book contains a summary of workshop discussions and 11 presented papers in the areas of fuel and additive technologies, aircraft fuel system requirements, and the characterization of fuel fires.

Book Flame Arrestor Materials for Fuel Tank Explosion Protection

Download or read book Flame Arrestor Materials for Fuel Tank Explosion Protection written by Joseph M. Kuchta and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to extend the data on the flame arrestor effectiveness of reticulated polyurethane foams proposed for explosion protection of aircraft fuel tanks. Foams of 10, 15, 20, and 25-pore/inch were evaluated in small- or large-scale experiments using various arrestor packing configurations. Results from small- scale experiments indicated that the ability of the foams to suppress n-pentane- air explosions does not vary noticeably when the foam bulk density is reduced from 1.86 lb cu ft to 1.35 lb cu ft. Other light-weight arrestors that were evaluated included crimped or honeycomb aluminum and Nomex materials which proved to be more effective than 10 ppi polyurethane foam. Large-scale gun-firing experiments made in a 74- gallon fuel tank showed that a cored arrestor model of the dry 20-pore/inch polyurethane foam, having 2-inch diameter cores, can be a suitable design configuration for integral fuel tank applications at pressures up to 5 psig.

Book Advanced Flame Arrestor Materials and Techniques for Fuel Tank Protection

Download or read book Advanced Flame Arrestor Materials and Techniques for Fuel Tank Protection written by Quentin C. Malmberg and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development and test concepts for minimizing the weight and volume displacement penalties of polyurethane foam explosion suppression systems are described. Both structural and integral isolation concepts for arrestor voiding techniques were investigated. These two approaches adjust weight and volume displacement penalties with respect to allowable fuel tank structural limits and system over-pressures. The structural isolation concept utilized natural aircraft structural compartmentization whereas the integral isolation concept used closed compartments within the foam itself in the form of hollow bodies. Flame arrestor effectiveness, fuel flow resistance and thermophysical properties of representative candidate materials and configurations are evaluated. (Author, modified-PL).
