Book excerpt: This magazine is a bumper edition ( Volume 4 ) celebrating the lives and achievements of old students of Mayflower School (Ex-Mays) in picures and in their own writings. It marks the 10th anniversary of the existence of Ex-Mays Global Charity , the forum under which ex-mays meet and plan to give back to their alma mater. Mayflower School was the special school founded by the late Dr. Tai Solarin in 1950, teaching standard educational curriculum spiced with intense vocational training relevant for the students to prove useful and productive in their post formal education careers. This should be a great resource for any reader wishing to learn more about life in Mayflower from the students perspectives.

Book excerpt: This magazine speaks out to old students of Mayflower School Nigeria, also called EX-MAYS, and their worldwide fans and admirers. It is about catching up with social events, high-achieving old students and global/community-inspired projects to help develop the alma mater, Mayflower, in the spirit of Tai Solarin, the founder of the school. It is designed to fan the embers of the dreams of the old students to collate resources from self, friends, family and well-wisher to make Mayflower a great model secondary school for the world. This laudable goal is to support the school with a multimillion dollar foundation budget catering for her numerous teething and non-teething, short-term and long -term needs - scholarships, infrastructural establishment and maintenance, staffing, books, computers, journals, research, income generation, tourism and so on. It is planned to be a model secondary school second to none, not only in Nigeria, but in Africa and the world at large. International exchanges of staff, students and researchers will be encouraged. It is envisioned that at some time in the nearest future, there would be multilevel global partnerships with stakeholders to be able to position the school to export students and newly graduated products to travel to developing countries to help with community projects like farming, buildings, digging of water wells, technical repairs, teaching in school, road construction and repair work and hospital rehabilitation and maintenance (like the Peace Corps of old ). Educationally, the plan is that several sister schools, colleges and universities will be liaised with worldwide to facilitate educational exchanges between the students either way. It is believed this is one of the dreams of Tai and Sheila to export their brand of education for self- reliance, to help developing communities to be able to stand up for themselves and help themselves. It is a goal worth pursuing tirelessly as education is the panacea to eradicate the double malaise of ignorance and poverty on earth. Our motto is: "conquering ignorance and poverty one at a time."

Book excerpt: “Supreme City captures a vanished Gotham in all its bustle, gristle, and glory” (Vanity Fair). In the 1920s midtown Manhattan became the center of New York City, and the cultural and commercial capital of America. This is the story of the people who made it happen. In just four words—“the capital of everything”—Duke Ellington captured Manhattan during one of the most exciting and celebrated eras in our history: the Jazz Age. Supreme City is the story of Manhattan’s growth and transformation in the 1920s and the brilliant people behind it. Nearly all of the makers of modern Manhattan came from elsewhere: Walter Chrysler from the Kansas prairie; entertainment entrepreneur Florenz Ziegfeld from Chicago. William Paley, founder of the CBS radio network, was from Philadelphia, while his rival David Sarnoff, founder of NBC, was a Russian immigrant. Cosmetics queen Elizabeth Arden was Canadian and her rival, Helena Rubinstein, Polish. All of them had in common vaulting ambition and a desire to fulfill their dreams in New York. As mass communication emerged, the city moved from downtown to midtown through a series of engineering triumphs—Grand Central Terminal and the new and newly chic Park Avenue it created, the Holland Tunnel, and the modern skyscraper. In less than ten years Manhattan became the social, cultural, and commercial hub of the country. The 1920s was the Age of Jazz—and the Age of Ambition. Transporting, deeply researched, and utterly fascinating, Supreme City “elegantly introduces one vivid character after another to re-create a vital and archetypical era…A triumph” (The New York Times).
