But yielding to the pressure brought to bear on me by many of my friends, and influenced more especially by the recent odious plot against M. Veniselos and the nation, a plot the object of which was patent to everybody, I decided to commit to paper not, indeed, a complete and orderly record of events, but just such incidents and reminiscences as might happen, from time to time, to come into my mind. I deem that when a man has occupied a position of trust and has been enabled to see what went on behind the scenes, he is not justified, when he at length relinquishes office, in divulging to all and sundry, the various things which came beneath his notice. There is possibly also something to be said for not destroying the illusions entertained by those whose lives are spent remote from the artificial and misleading atmosphere of Courts and Council Chambers.
