Book excerpt: The main intention of this paper is to provide details on how Islamic Higher Education (IHE) and its curriculum evolved in Kerala. While doing this, the history of various educational organizations, their reform attempts will be dealt briefly, but with the main intention of tracing the evolution of curriculum. In the course of this, firstly, the paper provides a brief historical account of Islamic education at higher levels in India, but with specific focus on their curriculum. As obvious the central concern will be on the higher level IHE provided in various institutions throughout the breadth and length of Kerala. History of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) at primary and secondary levels, thus, is not specifically within the scope of the paper, unless such an account is demanded for explanation on the key purpose. The special focus of the paper will be on various current attempts of reform of the curriculum of these institutions, and what could be done further to make these institutions relevant to the empowerment of Muslims and their creative social involvements.

Book excerpt: This study attempts to evaluate and review the curriculum of higher Islamic education in Bangladesh in order to discover its merits and demerits. It analyses and assesses the curriculum to examine whether it is comprehensive, integrated and holistic, and whether it is sufficient to meet the needs of the present time. The researcher employs a combination approach of research methods, namely historical, philosophical analysis, and curriculum criticism. The curricula of two selected programmes were examined; Fazil (three-year bachelor) of madaris affiliated to Islamic University Kushtia Bangladesh and Bachelor of Arts (four-year honours) in Islamic Studies at colleges affiliated to the National University Bangladesh. This research is conducted on the basis of the philosophical foundation and conceptual framework of higher Islamic education curriculum which comprises of four dimensions: faith (Iman), knowledge (Ilm), action (‘Amal), ethics and morality (Akhlaq). The framework has been developed based on three curriculum models of Al-Attas, Rosnani and the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The critical analysis discovers some inconsistencies and demerits of the existing curriculum; mainly that the educational philosophy, aims, and objectives are not clearly outlined, and that the contents and pedagogy are not conducive for the overall development of the graduates. The present study proposes a balanced and sound philosophy, comprehensive objectives and aims of higher Islamic education in Bangladesh, conforming to the recommendations of the World Conferences on Muslim Education, the thoughts of renowned Muslim scholars and the national ideology of the country, which is enshrined in the Basic Constitution. The research concludes that due to the changing circumstances at home and abroad, social demands and emerging technologies, a thorough reform of the curriculum is crucial. Finally, the research offers some necessary guidelines on forming holistic, comprehensive and integrated curricula comprising of Revealed Knowledge, and Natural and Social Sciences.

While appreciating the contributions of Madrasas in promoting education among the Muslim minority of India, the book also identifies their problems and suggests creative modalities. This book underlines the following positive lessons that the Kerala experience offers to developing countries: Radical reforms deliver benefits to the poor even when per capita incomes remain low. Popular movements and militant progressive organizations with dedicated leaders are necessary to initiate and sustain reform. Despite their other benefits, radical reforms cannot necessarily create employment or raise per capita income. Local reformers are restricted by national politics. Public distribution of food is a highly effective policy in poor agrarian economies. Devoting significant resources to public health can bring about low infant mortality, high life expectancy, and low birth rates even when incomes are low. Widespread literacy and educational opportunities can help create a more just and open social order. Meaningful land reform can reduce inequalities and give resources to the poor. Wage and working-condition laws can help effect more equitable resource distribution even in a poor economy. Greater socioeconomic equality can lead to lower levels of violence and a healthier social and political environment. Women can benefit from radical reforms not aimed at them, but special attention must eventually be given to their needs. Progressive forces, including Communist parties, can play a major positive role in benefiting very poor Third World citizens. Radical reforms can shield the poor against recessions.
