This new edition of the text contains the following updates: Literature citations have been added from 2012 to 2021, now spanning from 1709 to 2021. Distribution maps have been updated, recording the decreased ranges due to declining amphibian populations. Photographs have been revised to ensure the highest digital quality. Anaxyrus williamsi and Lithobates kauffeldi, newly described species, have been included. An account is also included for Gastrophryne mazatlanensis, now recognized as occurring within the United States. Generic keys have been added. A brief section on N.A. frogs in history and art have been added. Nomenclature has been updated (Incilius for Ollotis). Now the only up-to-date and comprehensive resource for those trying to protect amphibians in the US and Canada, as well as for researchers and wildlife managers who study biodiversity"--

Book Demographic Modeling of Conservation Strategies for the Yosemite Toad Anaxyrus Canorus

Download or read book Demographic Modeling of Conservation Strategies for the Yosemite Toad Anaxyrus Canorus written by Corrina R. Kamoroff and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yosemite toad (Anaxyrus canorus) is an anuran species endemic to the Sierra Nevada in California that, like many amphibians globally, has suffered population declines. The documented decline in A. canorus populations across their historic range highlights the need for an effective management strategy to protect the species from future extirpation. For this study, I estimated survival rates of A. canorus using a Cormack-Jolly-Seber model populated with data from a demographic study. I then used a female-only post-birth pulse stochastic Lefkovitch matrix model using vital rates I estimated and from the literature to simulate the effect of different management scenarios and to optimize a supplementation or reintroduction management plan. Without any management action, small populations of A. canorus populations have ≥50% risk of quasi-extinction over the next 13 years. The implementation of effective management strategies is critical to prevent further extinction of existing small populations. My results suggest that the effectiveness of a supplementation or a reintroduction management plan is dependent on the initial population size of the receiving population, life stage at release and number of individuals released into a wild population. I found that supplementing small toad populations with female adults is the most effective supplementation strategy to increase the stochastic growth rate and minimize the risk of quasi-extinction. This thesis suggests that modeling A. canorus population dynamics and trends of extant populations can help inform conservation strategies.

Book Habitat Modeling and Movements of the Yosemite Toad Anaxyrus

Download or read book Habitat Modeling and Movements of the Yosemite Toad Anaxyrus written by Christina Teh-ping Liang and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yosemite toad (Anaxyrus (=Bufo) canorus) is a high-elevation species endemic to the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California and is part of the world-wide amphibian declines phenomenon. The toad is thought to have disappeared from over 50% of its historic range even in seemingly undisturbed areas, and remaining populations appear to be in decline. The causes of the disappearance and decline are unknown, and this poses a particular challenge for management and conservation since there is little understanding on how to ensure the survival of remaining populations. In order to provide information that can be used to inform management and to aid in the conservation of the species, my research on the Yosemite toad consisted of three parts: (1) constructing species distribution models to identify environmental correlates; (2) identifying environmental correlates associated with different habitat patch types; and (3) determining movement patterns and habitat use in the terrestrial environment. In the first study, I used Yosemite toad survey data from over 2,200 sites in the Sierra National Forest in the southern part of the toad's range and related them to 54 environmental variables. I found that the Yosemite toad has a complex relationship with the environment and is correlated with both biophysical and management related variables. In the second study, I looked at 49 consistently occupied sites versus 27 intermittently occupied sites throughout the range of the Yosemite toad and related the two site types separately to 26 environmental variables. I found that the different site types were correlated with different environmental variables. In the third study, I radio-tracked 42 adult Yosemite toads and collected data on their movements and habitat use. I found that toads traveled up to 1.26 kilometers away from breeding sites, and the average distance moved was 275 meters. The toads were often found in burrows and extensively used the terrestrial environment. The results from my research help elucidate the environmental requirements of the Yosemite toad both in and away from breeding sites, and can be used to inform management decisions for protection of the species and its habitat.

Book Decline Movement and Habitat Utilization of the Yosemite Toad Bufo Canorus

Download or read book Decline Movement and Habitat Utilization of the Yosemite Toad Bufo Canorus written by David Lamar Martin and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2008 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canorus terrestrial foraging habitats, thereby having a greater impact on long term population viability, which is a classic example of well intended management practices failing to protect species due to the absence of adequate knowledge of the specialized habitat needs of amphibians. This study suggests the need for a B. canorus core habitat protection zone that extends 500m from the center of all actively used breeding pools.

Download or read book Pollination in Plants written by Phatlane William Mokwala and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-06-06 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants are the basic source of food for both humans and animals. Most of the food is made of fruits and seeds. For these to be formed, pollination must first take place. This process is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther, which is the male structure of the flower, to the sigma on the female structure of the flower. The transfer process requires agents to be carried out. The agents can be either biotic or abiotic. Nature perfected this arrangement between the pollination agents and the plants. As ecosystems and agricultural systems are changing, this balanced arrangement becomes disturbed. This makes it necessary that pollination systems be studied so that necessary measures can be undertaken to ensure productivity. The chapters of this book present results in research undertaken to improve productivity in crops such as Actinidia chinensis (the kiwifruit), Theobroma cacao (cocoa), and Manicaria saccifera (a tropical forest palm). Some results are presented on tests to check the viability of pollen grains and the delivery of sperm cells through pollen tubes to the embryo sac. These results can serve as guidelines to any person seeking to improve pollination and productivity or to check the efficiency on pollination in ecosystems or agricultural production systems.

Download or read book Handbook of Road Ecology written by Rodney van der Ree and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the IENE Project Award 2016. This authoritative volume brings together some of the world’s leading researchers, academics, practitioners and transportation agency personnel to present the current status of the ecological sustainability of the linear infrastructure – primarily road, rail and utility easements – that dissect and fragment landscapes globally. It outlines the potential impacts, demonstrates how this infrastructure is being improved, and how broad ecological principles are applied to mitigate the impact of road networks on wildlife. Research and monitoring is an important aspect of road ecology, encompassing all phases of a transportation project. This book covers research and monitoring to span the entire project continuum – starting with planning and design, through construction and into maintenance and management. It focuses on impacts and solutions for species groups and specific regions, with particular emphasis on the unique challenges facing Asia, South America and Africa. Other key features: Contributions from authors originating from over 25 countries, including from all continents Each chapter summarizes important lessons, and includes lists of further reading and thoroughly up to date references Highlights principles that address key points relevant to all phases in all road projects Explains best-practices based on a number of successful international case studies Chapters are "stand-alone", but they also build upon and complement each other; extensive cross-referencing directs the reader to relevant material elsewhere in the book Handbook of Road Ecology offers a comprehensive summary of approximately 30 years of global efforts to quantify the impacts of roads and traffic and implement effective mitigation. As such, it is essential reading for those involved in the planning, design, assessment and construction of new roads; the management and maintenance of existing roads; and the modifying or retrofitting of existing roads and problem locations. This handbook is an accessible resource for both developed and developing countries, including government transportation agencies, Government environmental/conservation agencies, NGOs, and road funding and donor organisations.
