Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades the theory of abstract Volterra equations has under gone rapid development. To a large extent this was due to the applications of this theory to problems in mathematical physics, such as viscoelasticity, heat conduc tion in materials with memory, electrodynamics with memory, and to the need of tools to tackle the problems arising in these fields. Many interesting phenomena not found with differential equations but observed in specific examples of Volterra type stimulated research and improved our understanding and knowledge. Al though this process is still going on, in particular concerning nonlinear problems, the linear theory has reached a state of maturity. In recent years several good books on Volterra equations have appeared. How ever, none of them accounts for linear problems in infinite dimensions, and there fore this part of the theory has been available only through the - meanwhile enor mous - original literature, so far. The present monograph intends to close this gap. Its aim is a coherent exposition of the state of the art in the linear theory. It brings together and unifies most of the relevant results available at present, and should ease the way through the original literature for anyone intending to work on abstract Volterra equations and its applications. And it exhibits many prob lems in the linear theory which have not been solved or even not been considered, so far.

Book Evolutionary Integral Equations and Applications

Download or read book Evolutionary Integral Equations and Applications written by Jan Prüss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-17 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with evolutionary systems whose equation of state can be formulated as a linear Volterra equation in a Banach space. The main feature of the kernels involved is that they consist of unbounded linear operators. The aim is a coherent presentation of the state of art of the theory including detailed proofs and its applications to problems from mathematical physics, such as viscoelasticity, heat conduction, and electrodynamics with memory. The importance of evolutionary integral equations ‒ which form a larger class than do evolution equations ‒ stems from such applications and therefore special emphasis is placed on these. A number of models are derived and, by means of the developed theory, discussed thoroughly. An annotated bibliography containing 450 entries increases the book’s value as an incisive reference text. --- This excellent book presents a general approach to linear evolutionary systems, with an emphasis on infinite-dimensional systems with time delays, such as those occurring in linear viscoelasticity with or without thermal effects. It gives a very natural and mature extension of the usual semigroup approach to a more general class of infinite-dimensional evolutionary systems. This is the first appearance in the form of a monograph of this recently developed theory. A substantial part of the results are due to the author, or are even new. (...) It is not a book that one reads in a few days. Rather, it should be considered as an investment with lasting value. (Zentralblatt MATH) In this book, the author, who has been at the forefront of research on these problems for the last decade, has collected, and in many places extended, the known theory for these equations. In addition, he has provided a framework that allows one to relate and evaluate diverse results in the literature. (Mathematical Reviews) This book constitutes a highly valuable addition to the existing literature on the theory of Volterra (evolutionary) integral equations and their applications in physics and engineering. (...) and for the first time the stress is on the infinite-dimensional case. (SIAM Reviews)

Book Integral Equation Methods for Evolutionary PDE

Download or read book Integral Equation Methods for Evolutionary PDE written by Lehel Banjai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of time domain boundary integral equations and their discretisation by convolution quadrature and the boundary element method. Properties of convolution quadrature, based on both linear multistep and Runge–Kutta methods, are explained in detail, always with wave propagation problems in mind. Main algorithms for implementing the discrete schemes are described and illustrated by short Matlab codes; translation to other languages can be found on the accompanying GitHub page. The codes are used to present numerous numerical examples to give the reader a feeling for the qualitative behaviour of the discrete schemes in practice. Applications to acoustic and electromagnetic scattering are described with an emphasis on the acoustic case where the fully discrete schemes for sound-soft and sound-hard scattering are developed and analysed in detail. A strength of the book is that more advanced applications such as linear and non-linear impedance boundary conditions and FEM/BEM coupling are also covered. While the focus is on wave scattering, a chapter on parabolic problems is included which also covers the relevant fast and oblivious algorithms. Finally, a brief description of data sparse techniques and modified convolution quadrature methods completes the book. Suitable for graduate students and above, this book is essentially self-contained, with background in mathematical analysis listed in the appendix along with other useful facts. Although not strictly necessary, some familiarity with boundary integral equations for steady state problems is desirable.

Book Handbook of Differential Equations Evolutionary Equations

Download or read book Handbook of Differential Equations Evolutionary Equations written by C.M. Dafermos and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material collected in this volume reflects the active present of this area of mathematics, ranging from the abstract theory of gradient flows to stochastic representations of non-linear parabolic PDE's. Articles will highlight the present as well as expected future directions of development of the field with particular emphasis on applications. The article by Ambrosio and Savaré discusses the most recent development in the theory of gradient flow of probability measures. After an introduction reviewing the properties of the Wasserstein space and corresponding subdifferential calculus, applications are given to evolutionary partial differential equations. The contribution of Herrero provides a description of some mathematical approaches developed to account for quantitative as well as qualitative aspects of chemotaxis. Particular attention is paid to the limits of cell's capability to measure external cues on the one hand, and to provide an overall description of aggregation models for the slim mold Dictyostelium discoideum on the other. The chapter written by Masmoudi deals with a rather different topic - examples of singular limits in hydrodynamics. This is nowadays a well-studied issue given the amount of new results based on the development of the existence theory for rather general systems of equations in hydrodynamics. The paper by DeLellis addreses the most recent results for the transport equations with regard to possible applications in the theory of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. Emphasis is put on the development of the theory in the case when the governing field is only a BV function. The chapter by Rein represents a comprehensive survey of results on the Poisson-Vlasov system in astrophysics. The question of global stability of steady states is addressed in detail. The contribution of Soner is devoted to different representations of non-linear parabolic equations in terms of Markov processes. After a brief introduction on the linear theory, a class of non-linear equations is investigated, with applications to stochastic control and differential games. The chapter written by Zuazua presents some of the recent progresses done on the problem of controllabilty of partial differential equations. The applications include the linear wave and heat equations, parabolic equations with coefficients of low regularity, and some fluid-structure interaction models. - Volume 1 focuses on the abstract theory of evolution - Volume 2 considers more concrete probelms relating to specific applications - Volume 3 reflects the active present of this area of mathematics, ranging from the abstract theory of gradient flows to stochastic representations of non-linear PDEs

Book Discovering Evolution Equations with Applications

Download or read book Discovering Evolution Equations with Applications written by Mark McKibben and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-07-19 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovering Evolution Equations with Applications: Volume 1-Deterministic Equations provides an engaging, accessible account of core theoretical results of evolution equations in a way that gradually builds intuition and culminates in exploring active research. It gives nonspecialists, even those with minimal prior exposure to analysis, the foundation to understand what evolution equations are and how to work with them in various areas of practice. After presenting the essentials of analysis, the book discusses homogenous finite-dimensional ordinary differential equations. Subsequent chapters then focus on linear homogenous abstract, nonhomogenous linear, semi-linear, functional, Sobolev-type, neutral, delay, and nonlinear evolution equations. The final two chapters explore research topics, including nonlocal evolution equations. For each class of equations, the author develops a core of theoretical results concerning the existence and uniqueness of solutions under various growth and compactness assumptions, continuous dependence upon initial data and parameters, convergence results regarding the initial data, and elementary stability results. By taking an applications-oriented approach, this self-contained, conversational-style book motivates readers to fully grasp the mathematical details of studying evolution equations. It prepares newcomers to successfully navigate further research in the field.
