Book excerpt: In this book, evolutionary classification and nomenclature in the Cretaceous planktic foraminifera with at least one stage with chambers alternately added with respect to the test growth axis are analysed in seven articles. The first article in this book presents new data about the group's evolutionary origin and different aspects of the iterative evolution of the planktic habitat in the foraminiferal history, together with a critical review of some past ideas on this topic. A new benthic foraminiferal genus is described. The evolution of different lineages is presented in five successive articles, which show the importance of high resolution data in reconstructing the group's evolutionary history. Four new lineages are described. A new perspective on the classification of the planktic foraminifera is presented in the last article, where at the scale of the entire group a new and upward evolutionary classification, is applied. The fundamental unit of organisation is changed from species to lineage through a shift at paradigm level in understanding the evolution of the fossil record. In further developments in evolutionary classification, a new nomenclature system is applied. The new nomenclature uses English instead of Latin and has a rate of compression of around 1:18 (one English word for 18 Latin words).

Book excerpt: The planktonic foraminifera have, for over forty years, been recognised to be the most valuable stratigraphic indices for marine sediments of Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic age. However, their evolutionary origins in the Jurassic and their development, morphological evolution and systematics in the Early Cretaceous have, until now, been poorly understood. This book illustrates for the first time all the published taxa known from the Jurassic, and clarifies and corrects their taxonomy. The taxonomy and stratigraphic distribution of the Early Cretaceous planktonic foraminifera are also revised, and all of the published species are illustrated, using the type specimens. The systematics of the Early Cretaceous forms are clearly set out, both for species and for genera: their evolution is explained as well as the ecological importance of the morphological changes they have undergone. Moreover, by analogy with the Recent Globigerinacea the palaeoenvironmental significance of these Early Cretaceous taxa is discussed. The book deals with 136 species belonging to 26 genera, five of which - Compactogerina, Haeuslerina (of the Jurassic), Lilliputianelloides; Claviblowiella and Planohedbergella (of the Cretaceous) - are new. Taxonomic classification of normal perforate taxa are organized according to wall texture. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of type species described by Morozova in the collections of the Geological Institute, Academy of Sciences (GAN), Moscow, and the type material described by Subbotina in the collections of the All Union Petroleum Scientific Research Geological Prospecting Institute (VNIGRI), St. Petersburg, are shown on Plates 8-12. Twelve species described by Morozova, nine species described by Subbotina, and one species described by Bykova are illustrated. In addition, SEM images of 28 holotypes and two paratypes from the Smithsonian Institution collections are shown on Plates 13-17, and the lectotype for Globigerina compressa Plummer, 1926, and the neotype for Globorotalia monmouthensis Olsson, 1961, are designated and illustrated with SEM images. Paleobiogeographic maps showing the global distribution of 29 commonly occurring Paleocene taxa are included in the atlas, as well as figures showing the stratigraphic ranges of species by genus and stratigraphic first and last appearances. The biostratigraphic framework used in the atlas is the revised biostratigraphy given in Berggren et al., 1995, which is summarized in the atlas. Wall texture and morphological relationships between species and genera form the basis of phylogenetic interpretations. This is discussed in the section "Wall Texture, Classification, and Phylogeny" and is referenced to Plates 1-7.
