Book excerpt: The question of the "historical Adam" is a flashpoint for many evangelical readers and churches. Science-and-theology scholar Loren Haarsma--who has studied, written, and spoken on science and faith for decades--shows it is possible both to affirm what science tells us about human evolution and to maintain belief in the doctrine of original sin. Haarsma argues that there are several possible ways of harmonizing evolution and original sin, taking seriously both Scripture and science. He presents a range of approaches without privileging one over the others, examining the strengths and challenges of each.

Book Christ and Evolution

Download or read book Christ and Evolution written by George A. Barton and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During these last years the writer has heard clergymen again and again confess that they did not know how to present the Gospel to the younger generation. The old bases of appeal are ineffective. The fear of Hell has gone; interest in immortality itself is absent from the minds of many; the old forms of appeal seem to many too individualistic and selfish to be inspiring. Many of the questions raised by modern knowledge are not met by the theologies that were formulated before the newer discoveries were made. The writer has found that young people heartily respond to the Gospel when garbed in the dress with which he has clothed it here, and that young clergymen go forth to their work with a new sense of mission and of the dignity of their calling when they understand that they are fellow workers with God in completing the creation of the human race.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Evolution: Its Basis and Its Scope The present volume consists of a series of eight addresses delivered as the Hewitt Lectures of Columbia University at Cooper Union in New York City during the months of February and March, 1907. The purpose of these lectures was to describe in concise outline the Doctrine of Evolution, its basis in the facts of natural history, and its wide and universal scope. They fall naturally into two groups. Those of the first part deal with matters of definition, with the essential character istics of living things, and, at greater length, with the evidences of organic evolution. The lectures of the second group take up the various aspects of human evolution as a special instance of the general organic process. In this latter part of the series, the subject of physical evolution is first considered, and this is followed by an analysis of human mental evolution; the chapter on social evolution extends the funda mental principles to a field which is not usually con sidered by biologists, and its purpose is to demonstrate the efficiency of the genetic method in this department as in all others; finally, the principles are extended to what is called the higher human life, the realm, namely, of ethical, religious, and theological ideas and ideals.
