More importantly, Veerashaiva Philosophy and Veerashaiva practices have evolved from what is in the Upanishads. Many concepts have remained the same, but many more have been modified into the present day form.This book explains how the evolution of the Veerashaiva concepts has taken place by going through the sacred Hindu scriptures.

Book excerpt: Present form of Vīraśaiva philosophy and practice is from the 12th century Common Era, as has been composed and presented in the 15th century Śūnya Saṁpādane which serves as the main scripture of the Vīraśaivas. Vīraśaiva philosophy and practices existed prior to Basavaṇṇa's reformation of Vīraśaivism. There is a long prehistory of the evolution of Vīraśaivism. Philosophical thoughts and religious practices of Vīraśaivism are traceable to, as far back as, the Ṛgvēdic period. The Upaniṣads, dealing with knowledge (jñāna kānḍa), are the quintessence of the Vēdas. Vīraśaiva Philosophy and Vīraśaiva practices have evolved from what is in the Upaniṣads. This book reviews the timing of the composition of the sacred Hindu scriptures, and then describe the Vīraśaiva concepts in relation to these scriptures in order to better understand the ancient nature of the concepts of Vīraśaivism.

In every form of species exists the soul that stands as eternal witness of thoughts of mind that becomes actions. It further situates these movements in the context of the global political economy where such movements cross national boundaries to locate believers among the Hindu diaspora and others. In contemporary neoliberal India, HIFMs have become important actors, and they realize themselves by making public assertions through service. The four pillars of the contemporary presence of such movements are: gurus, sociality, hegemony and social transformation. Gurus, who spearhead these movements, create a matrix of possible meanings in their public discourses which their followers pick up to create messages of personal and social change. Sociality is a core strategy of proliferation across such movements and implies social service, which is qualified by memories of the guru and what they are believed to embody. Hegemony is reflected in the fact that social service in such movements often ominously imbibes right-wing or far-right Hinduism. They propose a model of Hindu-inspired social transformation, involving faith building into and transforming the civil society. The book discusses in a nuanced way several Hindu-inspired faith movements of various hues which have made national and international impact. Book excerpt: Culture of Memory in South Asia reconfigures European representations of India as a paradigmatic extension of a classical reading, which posits the relation between text and context in a determined way. It explores the South Asian cultural response to European “textual” inheritances. The main argument of this work is that the reflective and generative nodes of Indian cultural formations are located in the configurations of memory, the body and idiom (verbal and visual), where the body or the body complex becomes the performative effect and medium of articulated memories. This work advances its arguments by engaging with mnemocultures-cultures of memory that survive and proliferate in speech and gesture. Drawing on Sanskrit and Telugu reflective sources, this work emphasizes the need to engage with cultural memory and the compositional modes of Indian reflective traditions. This important and original work focuses on the ruptured and stigmatised resources of heterogeneous Indian traditions and calls for critical humanities that move beyond the colonially configured received traditions. Sakhare called 'History and Philosophy of Liṅgᾱyat Religion' published by Karnatak University, Dharwad, India. It appears that this scholarly work, in English, of Professor Sakhare was frequently referred to in the past by the students of Philosophy and Religion in order to seek further insight into the Religious Philosophy of Liṅgᾱyatas who are also known as Vīraśaivas. Although the book had been regarded as one of the authentic works in English on this subject, some questions have been raised as to its usefulness as a reference book in the present day circumstances. With this in mind, the book was reviewed, and then, as it seemed appropriate to report the findings, this commentary has been submitted to the interested and concerned readers. This is a critical review.
